Thanks Robbie, I didn't quite follow your email but I more or less did a similar thing before reading your respones.
I was looking for run level 3 and it appears the world has changed a little, so i managed to modify grub details. The boot dies at app armour, at times it has taken me over half an hour to boot, rebooting safe back until it finally works. I read there are updates to the kernel that are suppose to fix this. So, I complied the latest kernel 2.6.31.5 from kernel.org. And well it now complains about not loading app armour profiles during the boot but it always boots and seems to work. Perhaps I could have just removed app armour. There is also a comlaint about ufw at boot but shorewall appears configured correctly as it was before the upgrade. This is the first time I complied a kernel in years. I have used slackware then gentoo for a while before I got turned onto dapper and then I forgotten about things like this. This time it took hours to compile to compile the kernel. Thanks!
