[Bug 296969] [NEW] right click to get property of mpeg freezes nautilus

2008-11-11 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

Hi

Not sure if this is a Nautilus or a codec issue:

I am running Intrepid with all updates as of today nov 11 '08.
I have mplayer, vlc (with all required codecs for vlc), xine installed and
gstreamers from good, bad and ugly, plus win32codecs.

I right click on an mpeg file in my home directory and choose
"properties" - and within seconds the window greys out and I have to
force quit. This seems to happen specifically with mpegs (I have tried
several).

Originally I wanted to change the permissions on the file - I was able
to do this via the command line, but was expecting to do so from the
properties' permissions section. As it is right now this is impossible.

I can right click and choose an application to play the file with, but
cannot access the properties dialogue.

Thanks

[Bug 296969] Re: right click to get property of mpeg freezes nautilus

2008-11-12 Thread gray
Hello Anthony

OK, I opted to wipe Ubuntu and re-install (thank goodness for
aptoncd...)

I did all updates, installed the nvidia 173 driver and then added the
gstreamer ugly. I then grabbed the mpeg from my windows partition,
copied it into /home/* and attempted to play it with totem. Totem asked
to check for codecs and grabbed from the ugly set... and then proceeded
to "grey-out". Despite loading the gstreamer codec I have been unable to
play this using gstreamer bad, and eventually opted to install vlc which
worked fine.

However, in THIS install, right-click properties is fine, for some
reason, but the original issue might be related to the gstreamer bad
plugin going awry somehow ?

In the previous install, all other media could be right-clicked on
without issue - it was purely the mpeg files (which were usually in the
600 meg size range)

As this is a fresh install, I am not sure how much help dmes will be but
will try to upload

thanks

[Bug 296969] Re: right click to get property of mpeg freezes nautilus

2008-11-12 Thread gray
...and back again - just a bit of clarification:

I tried a number of mpeg files, all around the same size of 600 - 700
megs and all failed to right-click properties in the previous install.

There was also a problem with trying to burn them to CD, in that when
attempting to make a data cd using brasero, as soon as I chose one of
those files, brasero would grey-out too and I would need to force quit -
I was able to burn the files using nero in xp however, so the files
themselves were not at fault.

In this new install I can right-click and get properties without issue,
however the inability to burn the file to cd remains:

Open Brasero
Choose data project
Select the mpeg
Press add button...

...and brasero greys-out and becomes non-responsive - I have to force
quit

thanks

[Bug 296969] Re: right click to get property of mpeg freezes nautilus

2008-11-13 Thread gray
I was just wondering if app-armor would have any effect - I did have
this installed in the last install... so I added the profiles from
synaptic and rebooted - at that point I started getting the problem with
right-click properties again, as well as brasero freezing. Snag is I am
not sure whether it is app-armor now or one of the codecs at fault here.

I then opted to remove app-armor profiles (including config files), but
kept app-armor application installed - boot-up-manager indicates that
app-armor is not running.

After another reboot, the problem is still here - I tried various files
from the "examples" folder in /home/* which all right-click properties
fine, but as soon as I try the same on the mpeg, the window greys-out
and needs to be force-quit - and brasero greys-out shortly after
selection an mpeg too.

I have attached the new dmesg and the new xsession-errors

[Bug 296969] Re: right click to get property of mpeg freezes nautilus

2008-11-13 Thread gray
Hi Sebastien

I am just wondering if this might be related to app-armor - thinking
that this "might" be a result of my using the app-armor profiles (I used
what came from synaptic, without fiddling there). Any thoughts ?

Also would there be any other tests or logfiles I could process/upload
to create more info to help fix this - as it stands, I cannot use
brasero for mpeg files.

thanks

[Bug 296969] Re: right click to get property of mpeg freezes nautilus

2008-11-13 Thread gray
OK back again - I did a fresh install in the hopes of narrowing down
what is causing the problem.

I also documented exactly what packages were installed after the
installation, tested 3 different mpegs each time something was
installed, both before and after a boo - see attachedt.

The final result seems to be that installation of gstreamer from the bad set,
or one of the dependencies is at fault.
Snag is that in order to play these files totem requires these codecs.

One final comment - a work-around here for me is to remove the gstreamer
codecs from the bad set and install vlc. Then set vlc as the default
player.

I have also attached the new xsession-errors in case it will provide
extra info

[Bug 368372] Re: ubuntu- bug jockey-common

2009-05-02 Thread gray
Hello

Grabbed Final release of Jaunty 9.04, installed to hard drive, did all
updates as at May 2 11.00 am South African time, then tried to install
the nvidia drivers for my FX 5500. It would appear that jockey-common
crashed, but there was no crash report in /var/crash. I then clicked on
the Activate button again, which would appear to be incorrectly set to
on, as it then proceeded to un-install the nvidia drivers.

What should have happened here is that firstly jockey-common should not
have crashed, and secondly, when it re-started itself, it should have
picked up that the drivers were now installed, the Activate button
should have been greyed out, and indicated to the user that a re-boot,
or re-login is needed to use the new nvidia drivers.

I then went to synaptic, re-installed jockey and jockey common,
rebooted, chose hardware drivers again, activated the nvidia drivers and
THIS time it installed correctly, without the crash.

[Bug 219840] Re: rkhunter reports hidden directories under /dev

2008-10-19 Thread gray
Hi

just a comment - initramfs and udev are surely standard - with java
possibly less so (but likely to be installed as the user gets more
experienced), so surely rkhunter should be instructed by default to not
be concerned about the first 2, and to merely comment on the third ?
Possibly a slightly more verbose explanation in those instances might be
appropriate ?

Hi

in my present install of Intrepid (originally from a daily CD of 17 oct)
the sound issue was substantially fixed by commenting out 3 lines in
/etc/pulse/daemon.conf

resample-method = speex-float-1

default-fragments = 8
default-fragment-size-msec = 10

as suggested by psyke83 in the forum.

This played flawlessly for over 8 hours.

hi thanks for the quick reply

sadly tho I did add the keyring as per:

Lovely - I grabbed the key via wget and then went to my user folder and

I still reckon there is some issue some place in Intrepid that prevents

There was a problem - but this has been solved along the way. I think
what happened way back then was that although I was able to get online
via the LAN card and adsl router, the network applet indicated that
there was no connection - I am guessing somewhat here, however as I now
run Intrepid which is detecting the dhcp connection fine.

thanks for the thought however

[Bug 219848] Re: rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot

2008-10-30 Thread gray
hello hackel

yes agreed - pulseaudio is still causing issues - I did manage to make
it mostly play - sometimes for 8 hours - but it does vary as it will
sometimes hesitate and then continue or hesitate and then "fail to
proceed"..

The settings below seem to result in mostly playing - but as I say, this
is very variable

resample-method = speex-float-3

default-fragments = 4
default-fragment-size-msec = 30

I have not tried any other music apps recently, but I seem to remember
that the same behaviour occurred in all, including totem with a video,
so I would say that pulseaudio setup needs to be fixed - something is
causing it to die.

I have noticed a couple of potential issues:

from /var/log/messages:
alsa-util.c: Device front:0 doesn't support 44100 Hz, changed to 48000 Hz
 - possibly this conversion is causing issues ?

and then using pulseaudio -k; sleep 4; pulseaudio -vv I get:

 - not sure what that implies ?

[Bug 291409] [NEW] nvidia driver install fails to proceed

2008-10-30 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

I have just installed Intrepid 8.10 (Pentium 4 box with an nvidia FX5500
vid card) - the final release as on 30 Oct, done all the updates and
rebooted.

I attempt to install the nvidia driver by clicking on
System/Administration/Hardware Drivers.
The correct driver (173) is located and I click enable.
I type in password, the window indicating progress pops up and then
disappears, without doing anything further - I check the router and there is no
internet access or anything to indicate an installation.

What should happen:

When choosing to enable the driver, the progress window should appear
and the download of the driver should procee, while showing the progress
of the download and installation in the progress bar. Upon completion,
the progress window should close leaving the main hardware driver window
open with an indication that the pc should be rebooted to use the new
driver.

Thanks

[Bug 288584] [NEW] DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply

2008-10-24 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dbus

when a cd is inserted into the drive I get the following error message:

DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply,
the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout
expired, or the network connection was broken.

...and then it goes ahead and mounts anyway

and when I attempt to remove the cd, the tray opens, and then
IMMEDIATELY closes and I then have to re-open the tray and grab the CD
before it is mounted again.

This makes Ubuntu look amateurish, as well as increasing the chances of
a scratched CD.

I am running the Release Candidate of 8.10

[Bug 280931] Re: Tray retracts automatically after eject with 2.6.27-6 and -7

2008-10-24 Thread gray
I confirm this bug happens here using Ubuntu RC of 8.10

Internal Sony 'rom on a Pentium 4 2.66 - a 4-year old box - the 'rom
works fine in XP (I dual boot XP as main system and Ubuntu as a testing
install).

I filed a separate bug relating to issues with inserting a cd into the
drive too, here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dbus/+bug/288584

not sure if there is a common element ?

[Bug 273031] Re: evolution crashes as soon as I start to type a message in email

2008-09-25 Thread gray
Hello

I have a problem - when Evolution freezes, necessitating a "kill"
command there is no resulting crash file in /var/crash relating to this,
nor does apport pick up the crash (yes I confirm that it is turned on,
as I have used it to submit crash reports recently).

I tried to get some info by starting the app from a terminal. I get
initially:

"(evolution:6758): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkSpinButton: setting an adjustment
with non-zero page size is deprecated"

which is duplicated several times and then comes:

"(evolution:6758): gtkhtml-editor-WARNING **: en-ZA: No such language"

so I assume there is a locale issue, which would explain the problem
only occurring when I hit the space bar after the first word - I would
assume it is trying to spell-check the word, using the en-ZA locale
(South Africa), but doesn't recognise it and freezes in confusion.

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 alpha 6 with all updates as of 10 pm 25 sept on
a pentium 4 2.6 cpu with 768 megs RAM.

Not sure if the above helps, but I do have to say that as it stands,
evolution is not useable as it stands right now.

hopefully the above might help a bit ?

[Bug 274686] [NEW] apport fails to detect applications freezing

2008-09-26 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apport

I have had 2 ongoing problems using Ubuntu 8.10 that apport never sees,
so that when I try to submit a bug, I am told that the bug application
is invalid.

1. Evolution freezes when I try to reply or type my own e-mail (as soon
as I press the space bar after the first word in the message window) -
in the terminal I get an indication that it does not recognise en-ZA as
a valid language. Apport does not react, presumably because I have to
manually kill Evolution, rather than a straight crash ?

2. Rhythmbox continually hiccups every couple of minutes and then within
the space of a 30 minutes to an hour it too freezes. Apport does not
react, presumably because I have to manually kill Evolution, rather than
a straight crash ?

I had the sound issue with Hardy too and am especially concerned that
this sound issue will continue into the final release of Intrepid.
Evolution is effectively unusable to me at the moment.

I would really love to fix the two issues, or at least be of use in
helping to do so via testing, as the rest of the Intrepid install is now
stable and fast.

I am running Intrepid 8.10 on a pentium 4 2.6 cpu with 769 megs ram.

[Bug 277426] [NEW] partitioner in 8.10 beta indicates using entire drive when using "free space"

2008-10-02 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

My drive has an

* XP partition,
* an ntfs backup partition
* and around 60 gigs as a test bed space available for test installations of
Ubuntu.

I downloaded the 8.10 beta iso and started the install.

The partitioner indicator at the top showed the partitions correctly - 3
sections, as I mention above

When deciding how to partition the drive I chose "use free space". The
2nd partitioner indicator then showed the entire drive in the colour one
would assume is being used for Ubuntu - blue. The indicator makes me
think the entire drive is going to be wiped - especially as this
indication is the same as for "use entire disk"

This should be changed so that only the free space used is blue, and the
rest remains green as per the 1st partitioner indicator.

Thanks

[Bug 277437] [NEW] progress bar does not show download progress

2008-10-03 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

When I install the nvidia driver using the Hardware Drivers tool, I
select the 173 as suggested by the tool and hit enable. Then a window
pops up which is supposed to show progress of the download and install
of the card.

* Firstly, the progress bar shows nothing about the progress of the
download - stays blank until the actual install

* Secondly, when it gets to 100% it just stops there (gtk jockey crashed
too while doing this - a bug already reported)

I know from previous experience that the nvidia driver is now installed,
but somebody new to the system would be wondering what is happening...

What should have occurred:
When the progress window appears it should immediately start to indicate the
progress of the download and when the install is done it should close and a
message should appear saying the nvidia driver is now installed - please reboot.

[Bug 277974] [NEW] mounting partition authorisation timeout is too short

2008-10-04 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

hi

this is something new to me, something in the updates released since the
Ubuntu 8.10 beta, as I was running the 8.10 alpha 6 before that without
this appearing...

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 beta with all updates as of 09:00 South African
time on Saturday 4 oct.

I have 2 ntfs partitions, one 30 gig with Winxp and one 100 giig with
WinXP backups and then Ubuntu is installed in the free space in the 3
section, using a default installation and telling it to install in free
space.

I want to access the backup partition, but have quite a long password
(and yes I was eating a bacon/cheese toasted at the time, so only had
one hand available...) so it took more than a couple seconds to type the
password to mount the drive.

I got a message that reads thus:

Unable to mount 100.0 GB Media

DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the
message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or
the network connection was broken.

There was an OK button in the error box which I clicked - I then
continued to type the password and accessed the partition.

I am not sure if this is specifically a timeout issue, but that is how
it appears at first glance - and yes it is repeatable - I just did it
again - this time minus bacon/cheese breakfast :) - but still typing
slowly

cheers

[Bug 273031] [NEW] evolution crashes as soon as I start to type a message in email

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I start up a new message, insert email address, add subject line, and
then try to start typing in the message window, at which point evolution
closes without at error. As long as I don't typ in the message window
all seems fine - can recieve mail and read that, and I can click around
in the recieved mail message area with no issue.

I am able to save the message as a draft, after adding the email address
and subject line, but as soon as I start on the message, evolution
disappears.

I have just tried to forward a mail received, using the reply button on
a subject line in the list of recieved messages, and evolution closed
immediately. If I open the received message in a new window and hit
reply button, the window greys out and evolution stops responding.

I have managed to copy/paste the received mail into a text editor and
put it where XP can see it, in order to reply.

I am running Ubuntu 8.10 and have just done all updates as of 10 am this
morning.

Evolution is 2.23.91 and the automatic crash reporter does not seem to
notice that evolution has crashed.

What I expect to happen: Evolution should not crash. At this point it is
unusable as I cannot respond to, nor send email.

[Bug 252174] Re: gvfsd-trash crashed with SIGSEGV in g_main_context_dispatch()

2008-09-24 Thread gray
not sure if I should still submit this - but seeing as it happened when
I ran Update Manager, I reckon it is important to fix. Anyhow I fired up
Update Manager (had Rhythmbox going too) and then the error/crash window
popped up - this on a freshly installed Intrepid with every update I can
find. The updater completed it's checks and found nothing before I
reported this.

[Bug 288584] Re: DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply

2008-12-31 Thread gray
Hi

the error message is as follows:

"DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply.
Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply,
the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout
expired, or the network connection was broken."

What happens is that I insert CD into the drive - a Sony DRU-840A
ATAPI/EIDE internal DVD-rom - and eventually the above error message
appears.

A couple of seconds later, the CD mounts anyway, allowing me to access
it as per expectation. I would assume the answer would be to extend the
timeout ?

What should happen is that the CD should mount without error.

The previous issue where the drive would eject and then immediately
retract has been fixed. Many thanks for that.

Cheers

[Bug 219848] Re: rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot

2009-01-05 Thread gray
Hello Daniel

I have installed Jaunty daily 25-12-08 and grabbed all updates.

Thus far my experience has been of music without hiccups or freezes -
without any need to adjust the daemon.conf file or any other tweaks. I
will leave the system playing music while I am at work. Should it still
be playing upon my return I would consider the issue fixed as that
return home is close to 12 hours.

I will reply here at that time to confirm.

2007-10-02 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

After upgrade from feisty to gutsy and reboot i get desktop without theme (with
simple theme) and without volume control applet.
When i try to launch gnome-appearance-properties i got error:

Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'.
Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take
effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE)
settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings
manager.

And theme changes does not affect desktop.
I got the same error when i trying to launch other programs from "Preferences

[Bug 219533] [NEW] "watch my library for new files" creates import errors - tries to re-import entire collection

2008-04-19 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

Under edit/preferences/music there is the option to "Watch my library
for new files". When this is ticked, I immediately get an Import Error
in the left side pane, as it tries to re-import the files again.

I had previously imported my files via the Music/Import Folder drop-down menu,
then closed Rhythmbox.
This happens every time I try this.

The only way to prevent the issue at the moment for me is to untick the
"Watch my library for new files" option.

I am using the new release candidate for Ubuntu 8.04 - available on 18
April 2008 plus all updates.

The app is Rhythmbox 0.11.5

Ideal behaviour would have been for nothing to happen until I add new
music, at which point it should get added to the collection found under
Music in the left hand pane - I have not set up any lists of mine own as
yet

Re: [Bug 219533] Re: "watch my library for new files" creates import errors - tries to re-import entire collection

2008-04-19 Thread gray
Hello Thomas

The library is part and parcel of a default Ubuntu install. I copied the files
from my WinXP
partition to my Music Folder in /home/user - so they are sitting in a ext3 file
system, I would
assume - I specifically did a default install into free space on my drive for
testing purposes - The
only apps I have added thus far have been dvdrip, with requires deps for that.

Thanks for all the hard work you guys do !

[Bug 80383] Re: Edgy, rhythmbox freeze when playing mp3 for a long time.

2008-04-19 Thread gray
Hi

I am running the new release candidate of Ubuntu 8.04 and Rhythmbox does
the same as above - after an hour or two it freezes - I am able to kill
the app, simply by right-clicking on the taskbar and choosing close, and
then saying to the pop-up window asking if I want to stop the app which
is not responding - however after that I cannot play any further sound
of any sort, even in a movie in Totem - it would appear that the sound
system becomes totally locked - I have to reboot to cure this - and
after a reboot Rhythmbox plays as before the freeze.

Please note the files are in my home directory, as created by Ubunu
during the install process, this is a default install of Ubuntu 8.04,
plus all updates as of an hour back. I am running Ubuntu in a dual-boot
with WinXP on a 200 gig drive - Ubuntu is on the last 40 gig space,
which was unused prior to install of Ubuntu.

App is Rhythmbox 0.11.5

The codecs are ones suggested by Totem, prior to starting Rhythmbox - 2
Gstreamer packages, allowing mp3 and avi support

The other applications are not affected, barring the fact that I need to
restart to regain access to sound.

If there is any further info you need please let me know.

I am wondering if I should install Amarok to see if it happens with that
too - which would then point to the sound system rather than Rhythmbox ?

Thanks

[Bug 219840] [NEW] rkhunter reports hidden directories under /dev

2008-04-20 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

I am reasonably sure that

[11:51:09] Warning: Hidden directory found: /dev/.udev
[11:51:09] Warning: Hidden directory found: /dev/.initramfs

merely means that rkhunter has found a non-standard file - at least as
far as rkhunter is concerned - but which is a default install for Hardy
Heron. In this case I would assume that rkhunter needs to be updated ?

I am using the release candidate of Hardy Heron - installed in free
space at the end of my single hard drive, dual booting with winxp. The
install is a standard setup (no fancy partitions), with all updates,
plus quanta, dvdrip, amarok and k3b with all required libs and apps for
these additions. The only changes I have made via the console have been
to place winxp first in the grub menu, enable ufw (with default deny)
and to make sudo timeout to be zero.

What I would have expected to happen is no warnings - seeing as this is
a clean, new install, done last night and only surfing to known safe
websites, and the limited installation done thus far

[Bug 219848] [NEW] rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot

2008-04-20 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

The title says it all really - I play from local files - mp3 and ogg -
in my /home/user/Music directory created by a default install of Hardy
Heron using free space at the end of my hard drive - dual booting with
winxp.

I run evolution, firefox and rhythmbox and sit here surfing, or go and
do household chores etc - shortly after an hour all sound stops as
rhythmbox freezes. I quit rhythmbox, via right-click on taskbar button
for rhythmbox and close, and then say yes to quit program not
responding. After that all sound apps, such as movie players cannot play
sound, tho the movie is showing fine. A reboot gets my sound back. The
install is standard, with the addition of the following apps (they were
installed AFTER that freezing - Amarok was installed specifically to see
if it too would do the same): amarok, K3b, dvdrip, quanta and all
required deps and apps for these programs. The codecs to play mp3 were
chosen by Totem before I started Rhythmbox just after the fresh install.

Amarok has been playing for 3 and a half hours thus far - one or 2
momentary skips in play, but no freeze and system more responsive than
with amarok (as in when minimise and maximise apps)

What I would expect to happen - continual playback for several years if
need be !

System here: Ubuntu 8.04 with all updates as of 2 hours ago - 768 megs
ram on a Intel Pentium 4 2.66 Ghz

thanks for the work thus far

[Bug 219848] Re: rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot

2008-04-20 Thread gray
Hello

I have just wiped the previous installation and redone a clean one, with
no change to default that might impact on the rhythmbox player in any
way. All the music files I have in /home/user/Music are now purely ogg
files, so no new codecs required (thereby canceling out that variable) -
all updates have been applied. The only added extra is the nvidia
module. The only console changes are the usual reduction in timeout of
sudoers file and the re-arrangement of the grub list to put XP first.

Now I just have to see if this will still freeze, or not.

Thanks for your time

[Bug 131389] Re: grub should "silently succeed"

2008-04-20 Thread gray
Hello

I far prefer **not** having that short, rather scruffy font telling me
that grub is loading - I have tried out several other distros and thus
far only debian and the ubuntu-based distros do this - it just looks
amateurish. Possibly there might be an option in grub where one could
turn that off ? Surely by now grub is sufficiently stable and reliable
to not need it?

[Bug 112484] Re: audio skips under IO load, doesn't resume where it stopped

2008-04-20 Thread gray
I have even got a skip when merely minimising or maximising another app
- for example my typical session would include rhythmbox, evolution,
pidgin and firefox - I have not yet fiddled with any of the services as
yet - to improve matters, but in any case this is a reasonably
responsive system in XP (pentium 4 2.66 Ghz cpu with 768 megs ram with
an FX550 nvidia graphics card) - granted not fancy, but not a dog.

This is a totally fresh stock standard install, plus all updates of the
Hardy release candidate - only one thing has been added - the nvidia
module so I don't have to reset the monitor when I boot between Winxp
and Ubuntu. The sound files are pure ogg so no new codecs have been
added either.

I really think the buffer size could be increased, or allow the user to
increase it in the settings someplace.

cheers

[Bug 112484] Re: audio skips under IO load, doesn't resume where it stopped

2008-04-20 Thread gray
OK I have removed the following services from startup:

Bluetooth device management
CPU frequency management
Power management - apmd (acpid is left on)
Printer service

and then from the user's session options I removed:
Bluetooth manager
Evolution alarm notifier
Network manager applet
Power manager
Print queue applet
Tracker
Tracker applet

the result has been that I can minimise and maximise frantically - with
no skipping.

the snag I have here is that while I personally don't need these
services, a laptop user might, or an office worker - so there does need
to be some way to allow rhythmbox to be more "forgiving".

thanks for the hard work !

[Bug 219848] Re: rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot

2008-04-21 Thread gray
Just a thought - the freeze occurred on an mp3 file - and it does not
seem to matter which mp3 file - I have restarted the process further
down the list to see if that too will cause a freeze on some arbitrary
mp3 file. I tried amarok at one point in the past before this last
install, and I never had a crash, so wondering if the xine engine is
more stable than the gstreamer ?

[Bug 220392] [NEW] network applet - eth0 does not exist

2008-04-21 Thread gray
Public bug reported:

right click on network applet in panel, choose properties, and then
configure - type in password and the result is this:

"The interface does not exist" and also " Check that it is correctly
typed and that it is correctly supported by your system" - this happens
on a fully functional dhcp wired connection - used it to get to this
site.

System/administration/network detects it correctly however as wired
connection dhcp.

I am using ubuntu 8.04 RC with latest updates as of 3 hours back using
eth0 at the connection via a nat router and adsl

thanks - if there is any more info you need please mail me the commands
to achieve this.

[Bug 219848] Re: rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot

2008-04-23 Thread gray
OK back again

I did all the updates released 22 april on a system that is still a
default - no new apps added (apart from Bluefish, which should have no
impact on a sound app in any case), and only the recommended codecs as
suggested by the system to play my files (Gstreamers) .

I trashed all mp3 files in my music folder, leaving only ogg files,
restarted Rhythmbox and within 10 minutes Rhythmbox had frozen, once
again, all sound is locked and cannot play movie files. All other apps
seem unaffected however.

Just for the record, I usually use Amarok, or before that xmms, and have
never experienced this constant freeze before. The mp3 files and ogg
files are ones that I listen to often, whatever system I use. What makes
it even more frustrating is the otherwise total stability of the rest of
my applications !

Thanks for your time and hard work :)

try setting soundplayback in all 3 options to alsa rather than

[Bug 219848] Re: rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot

2008-05-01 Thread gray
Hi

last comment from me - I have changed the sound setup, in
system/preferences/sound/devices to alsa and all sound weirdness seems
to have gone - no more popping and distorting when windows minimise, and
thus far no freezing - so it would appear that the Pulseaudio system is
at fault here - certainly I have never had a problem with my soundcard
before in linux. This is my sound card - for what it is worth:

Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237
AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)

thanks

Re: [Bug 219848] Re: rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot

2008-05-08 Thread gray

Hello Anton

I have to say that the answer was **definitely** setting up sound to use alsa
only - as soon as I did this all issues vanished - oh and as a bonus,
audacity (set up to use alsa) worked too - I am at present running Mandriva
One, and I have done the same here specifically to use audacity in this case,
as the crashing never showed here (but the inability of audacity to use pulse
audio was identical) - I assume the variation of pulse audio is different ?

If you really need me to check this I am willing to wipe Mandriva and
re-install Ubuntu to help - but ideally only if you have need of my info.

Please let me know if this is needed.

cheers, and thanks for coming back to me.

Re: [Bug 219848] Re: rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot

2008-05-08 Thread gray

Hello Anton

I went to the link supplied, and no the bug is not the same - the only issue I
had (asides from audacity not function with pulse) is that I would be playing
sounds off the hard drive for a while and suddenly all would be quiet - the
rhythmbox would be nonresponsive - I would kill it, but still no sounds in
any way, not at all. Only a full reboot would bring sound back. No other
aspect of the system was affected - mouse, keyboard and all other non-media
apps were fine.

thanks

[Bug 478710] Re: dvd::rip does not complete ripping of disc via gui in karmic

2009-12-07 Thread gray
Hi Luke

Sorry, but could you elaborate a bit ? What does having PSU enabled mean
in this context ? Where would I check for that ? I am not a total newbie
in Linux, but this is my first laptop and first double processor.

I am running on a core 2 laptop (Ubuntu sees 2 CPUs as per the system
monitor) with 2 GB of RAM which is plugged into mains when doing
anything power hungry like this. The OS is 32 bit Ubuntu 9.10. I usually
leave the machine undisturbed when running dvd::rip. On my old Pentium 4
with one CPU I always found dvd::rip very reliable, so am wondering if
the double CPU is throwing the process off in some way ?

When ripping a vid, dvd::rip always seems to stop at around the 85 % -
95 % mark in the ripping progress bar. I then save the project and close
dvd::rip, else I cannot go any further as the buttons related to the
next steps in the process are greyed out. When i restart, the greyed out
buttons are now usable. the point i am trying to make is that the rip of
the vob files works fine, as tested in a vid player where both the
beginning and the end of the vid are in place, but when encoded to avi
format, it would appear that the 10% - 15% that dvd::rip thinks has not
been ripped is somehow related to the missing bit in the beginning of
the vid.

Thanks
Gray

2009-12-07 Thread gray
Hi Luke

Just a quick query:

Would the fact that I am running a 32-bit OS on a machine that ideally
should have a 64-bit OS make any difference ? I opted for 32-bit for
program compatibility but maybe it does not run CPU intensive tasks
quite as accurately ?

[Bug 255768] Re: evolution asking for a password, even though it should be remembered

2009-11-11 Thread gray
second update

this time definitely evolution is the issue.

a pop-up happened asking for evolution to get permission to access the
keyring - I hit deny and then the "type in your password" dialogue
appears, BUT the password IS already there...

it would appear that the delay of the email server responding causes
evolution to request the password, in this instance.
