[Bug 296969] [NEW] right click to get property of mpeg freezes nautilus
Public bug reported: Hi Not sure if this is a Nautilus or a codec issue: I am running Intrepid with all updates as of today nov 11 '08. I have mplayer, vlc (with all required codecs for vlc), xine installed and gstreamers from good, bad and ugly, plus win32codecs. I right click on an mpeg file in my home directory and choose "properties" - and within seconds the window greys out and I have to force quit. This seems to happen specifically with mpegs (I have tried several). Originally I wanted to change the permissions on the file - I was able to do this via the command line, but was expecting to do so from the properties' permissions section. As it is right now this is impossible. I can right click and choose an application to play the file with, but cannot access the properties dialogue. [Bug 296969] Re: right click to get property of mpeg freezes nautilus
Hello Anthony OK, I opted to wipe Ubuntu and re-install (thank goodness for aptoncd...) I did all updates, installed the nvidia 173 driver and then added the gstreamer ugly. I then grabbed the mpeg from my windows partition, copied it into /home/* and attempted to play it with totem. Totem asked to check for codecs and grabbed from the ugly set... and then proceeded to "grey-out". Despite loading the gstreamer codec I have been unable to play this using gstreamer bad, and eventually opted to install vlc which worked fine. However, in THIS install, right-click properties is fine, for some reason, but the original issue might be related to the gstreamer bad plugin going awry somehow ? In the previous install, all other media could be right-clicked on without issue - it was purely the mpeg files (which were usually in the 600 meg size range) As this is a fresh install, I am not sure how much help dmes will be but will try to upload thanks ** Attachment added: "dmesg-from-log.txt" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19610245/dmesg-from-log.txt -- right click to get property of mpeg freezes nautilus https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/296969 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 296969] Re: right click to get property of mpeg freezes nautilus
...and back again - just a bit of clarification: I tried a number of mpeg files, all around the same size of 600 - 700 megs and all failed to right-click properties in the previous install. There was also a problem with trying to burn them to CD, in that when attempting to make a data cd using brasero, as soon as I chose one of those files, brasero would grey-out too and I would need to force quit - I was able to burn the files using nero in xp however, so the files themselves were not at fault. In this new install I can right-click and get properties without issue, however the inability to burn the file to cd remains: Open Brasero Choose data project Select the mpeg Press add button... ...and brasero greys-out and becomes non-responsive - I have to force quit thanks -- right click to get property of mpeg freezes nautilus https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/296969 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 296969] Re: right click to get property of mpeg freezes nautilus
I was just wondering if app-armor would have any effect - I did have this installed in the last install... so I added the profiles from synaptic and rebooted - at that point I started getting the problem with right-click properties again, as well as brasero freezing. Snag is I am not sure whether it is app-armor now or one of the codecs at fault here. I then opted to remove app-armor profiles (including config files), but kept app-armor application installed - boot-up-manager indicates that app-armor is not running. After another reboot, the problem is still here - I tried various files from the "examples" folder in /home/* which all right-click properties fine, but as soon as I try the same on the mpeg, the window greys-out and needs to be force-quit - and brasero greys-out shortly after selection an mpeg too. [Bug 296969] Re: right click to get property of mpeg freezes nautilus
Hi Sebastien I am just wondering if this might be related to app-armor - thinking that this "might" be a result of my using the app-armor profiles (I used what came from synaptic, without fiddling there). Any thoughts ? Also would there be any other tests or logfiles I could process/upload to create more info to help fix this - as it stands, I cannot use brasero for mpeg files. thanks -- right click to get property of mpeg freezes nautilus https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/296969 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 296969] Re: right click to get property of mpeg freezes nautilus
OK back again - I did a fresh install in the hopes of narrowing down what is causing the problem. I also documented exactly what packages were installed after the installation, tested 3 different mpegs each time something was installed, both before and after a boo - see attachedt. The final result seems to be that installation of gstreamer from the bad set, or one of the dependencies is at fault. Snag is that in order to play these files totem requires these codecs. ** Attachment added: "steps to recreate freeze with mpeg.txt" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19627548/steps%20to%20recreate%20freeze%20with%20mpeg.txt -- right click to get property of mpeg freezes nautilus https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/296969 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 368372] Re: ubuntu- bug jockey-common
Hello Grabbed Final release of Jaunty 9.04, installed to hard drive, did all updates as at May 2 11.00 am South African time, then tried to install the nvidia drivers for my FX 5500. It would appear that jockey-common crashed, but there was no crash report in /var/crash. I then clicked on the Activate button again, which would appear to be incorrectly set to on, as it then proceeded to un-install the nvidia drivers. What should have happened here is that firstly jockey-common should not have crashed, and secondly, when it re-started itself, it should have picked up that the drivers were now installed, the Activate button should have been greyed out, and indicated to the user that a re-boot, or re-login is needed to use the new nvidia drivers. I then went to synaptic, re-installed jockey and jockey common, rebooted, chose hardware drivers again, activated the nvidia drivers and THIS time it installed correctly, without the crash. -- ubuntu- bug jockey-common https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/368372 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 219848] Re: rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot
hello hackel yes agreed - pulseaudio is still causing issues - I did manage to make it mostly play - sometimes for 8 hours - but it does vary as it will sometimes hesitate and then continue or hesitate and then "fail to proceed".. The settings below seem to result in mostly playing - but as I say, this is very variable resample-method = speex-float-3 default-fragments = 4 default-fragment-size-msec = 30 I have not tried any other music apps recently, but I seem to remember that the same behaviour occurred in all, including totem with a video, so I would say that pulseaudio setup needs to be fixed - something is causing it to die. Hello I have a problem - when Evolution freezes, necessitating a "kill" command there is no resulting crash file in /var/crash relating to this, nor does apport pick up the crash (yes I confirm that it is turned on, as I have used it to submit crash reports recently). I tried to get some info by starting the app from a terminal. I get initially: "(evolution:6758): Gtk-WARNING **: GtkSpinButton: setting an adjustment with non-zero page size is deprecated" which is duplicated several times and then comes: "(evolution:6758): gtkhtml-editor-WARNING **: en-ZA: No such language" so I assume there is a locale issue, which would explain the problem only occurring when I hit the space bar after the first word - I would assume it is trying to spell-check the word, using the en-ZA locale (South Africa), but doesn't recognise it and freezes in confusion. I am running Ubuntu 8.10 alpha 6 with all updates as of 10 pm 25 sept on a pentium 4 2.6 cpu with 768 megs RAM. Not sure if the above helps, but I do have to say that as it stands, evolution is not useable as it stands right now. hopefully the above might help a bit ? -- evolution crashes as soon as I start to type a message in email https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/273031 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 274686] [NEW] apport fails to detect applications freezing
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apport I have had 2 ongoing problems using Ubuntu 8.10 that apport never sees, so that when I try to submit a bug, I am told that the bug application is invalid. 1. Evolution freezes when I try to reply or type my own e-mail (as soon as I press the space bar after the first word in the message window) - in the terminal I get an indication that it does not recognise en-ZA as a valid language. Apport does not react, presumably because I have to manually kill Evolution, rather than a straight crash ? 2. Rhythmbox continually hiccups every couple of minutes and then within the space of a 30 minutes to an hour it too freezes. Apport does not react, presumably because I have to manually kill Evolution, rather than a straight crash ? I had the sound issue with Hardy too and am especially concerned that this sound issue will continue into the final release of Intrepid. Evolution is effectively unusable to me at the moment. I would really love to fix the two issues, or at least be of use in helping to do so via testing, as the rest of the Intrepid install is now stable and fast. I am running Intrepid 8.10 on a pentium 4 2.6 cpu with 769 megs ram. lspci gives: 00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. P4M266 Host Bridge 00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. [Bug 277426] [NEW] partitioner in 8.10 beta indicates using entire drive when using "free space"
Public bug reported: My drive has an * XP partition, * an ntfs backup partition * and around 60 gigs as a test bed space available for test installations of Ubuntu. I downloaded the 8.10 beta iso and started the install. The partitioner indicator at the top showed the partitions correctly - 3 sections, as I mention above When deciding how to partition the drive I chose "use free space". The 2nd partitioner indicator then showed the entire drive in the colour one would assume is being used for Ubuntu - blue. The indicator makes me think the entire drive is going to be wiped - especially as this indication is the same as for "use entire disk" This should be changed so that only the free space used is blue, and the rest remains green as per the 1st partitioner indicator. [Bug 277974] [NEW] mounting partition authorisation timeout is too short
Public bug reported: hi this is something new to me, something in the updates released since the Ubuntu 8.10 beta, as I was running the 8.10 alpha 6 before that without this appearing... I am running Ubuntu 8.10 beta with all updates as of 09:00 South African time on Saturday 4 oct. I have 2 ntfs partitions, one 30 gig with Winxp and one 100 giig with WinXP backups and then Ubuntu is installed in the free space in the 3 section, using a default installation and telling it to install in free space. I want to access the backup partition, but have quite a long password (and yes I was eating a bacon/cheese toasted at the time, so only had one hand available...) so it took more than a couple seconds to type the password to mount the drive. I got a message that reads thus: Unable to mount 100.0 GB Media DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. There was an OK button in the error box which I clicked - I then continued to type the password and accessed the partition. I am not sure if this is specifically a timeout issue, but that is how it appears at first glance - and yes it is repeatable - I just did it again - this time minus bacon/cheese breakfast :) - but still typing slowly cheers ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- mounting partition authorisation timeout is too short https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/277974 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center After upgrade from feisty to gutsy and reboot i get desktop without theme (with simple theme) and without volume control applet. When i try to launch gnome-appearance-properties i got error: Unable to start the settings manager 'gnome-settings-daemon'. Without the GNOME settings manager running, some preferences may not take effect. This could indicate a problem with Bonobo, or a non-GNOME (e.g. KDE) settings manager may already be active and conflicting with the GNOME settings manager. And theme changes does not affect desktop. [Bug 219533] [NEW] "watch my library for new files" creates import errors - tries to re-import entire collection
Public bug reported: Under edit/preferences/music there is the option to "Watch my library for new files". When this is ticked, I immediately get an Import Error in the left side pane, as it tries to re-import the files again. I had previously imported my files via the Music/Import Folder drop-down menu, then closed Rhythmbox. This happens every time I try this. The only way to prevent the issue at the moment for me is to untick the "Watch my library for new files" option. I am using the new release candidate for Ubuntu 8.04 - available on 18 April 2008 plus all updates. The app is Rhythmbox 0.11.5 Ideal behaviour would have been for nothing to happen until I add new music, at which point it should get added to the collection found under Music in the left hand pane - I have not set up any lists of mine own as yet ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- "watch my library for new files" creates import errors - tries to re-import entire collection https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/219533 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 219533] Re: "watch my library for new files" creates import errors - tries to re-import entire collection
Hello Thomas The library is part and parcel of a default Ubuntu install. I copied the files from my WinXP partition to my Music Folder in /home/user - so they are sitting in a ext3 file system, I would assume - I specifically did a default install into free space on my drive for testing purposes - The only apps I have added thus far have been dvdrip, with requires deps for that. [Bug 80383] Re: Edgy, rhythmbox freeze when playing mp3 for a long time.
Hi I am running the new release candidate of Ubuntu 8.04 and Rhythmbox does the same as above - after an hour or two it freezes - I am able to kill the app, simply by right-clicking on the taskbar and choosing close, and then saying to the pop-up window asking if I want to stop the app which is not responding - however after that I cannot play any further sound of any sort, even in a movie in Totem - it would appear that the sound system becomes totally locked - I have to reboot to cure this - and after a reboot Rhythmbox plays as before the freeze. Please note the files are in my home directory, as created by Ubunu during the install process, this is a default install of Ubuntu 8.04, plus all updates as of an hour back. I am running Ubuntu in a dual-boot with WinXP on a 200 gig drive - Ubuntu is on the last 40 gig space, which was unused prior to install of Ubuntu. App is Rhythmbox 0.11.5 The codecs are ones suggested by Totem, prior to starting Rhythmbox - 2 Gstreamer packages, allowing mp3 and avi support The other applications are not affected, barring the fact that I need to restart to regain access to sound. If there is any further info you need please let me know. I am wondering if I should install Amarok to see if it happens with that too - which would then point to the sound system rather than Rhythmbox ? The install is a standard setup (no fancy partitions), with all updates, plus quanta, dvdrip, amarok and k3b with all required libs and apps for these additions. The only changes I have made via the console have been to place winxp first in the grub menu, enable ufw (with default deny) and to make sudo timeout to be zero. [Bug 219848] [NEW] rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox The title says it all really - I play from local files - mp3 and ogg - in my /home/user/Music directory created by a default install of Hardy Heron using free space at the end of my hard drive - dual booting with winxp. I run evolution, firefox and rhythmbox and sit here surfing, or go and do household chores etc - shortly after an hour all sound stops as rhythmbox freezes. I quit rhythmbox, via right-click on taskbar button for rhythmbox and close, and then say yes to quit program not responding. After that all sound apps, such as movie players cannot play sound, tho the movie is showing fine. A reboot gets my sound back. The install is standard, with the addition of the following apps (they were installed AFTER that freezing - Amarok was installed specifically to see if it too would do the same): amarok, K3b, dvdrip, quanta and all required deps and apps for these programs. The codecs to play mp3 were chosen by Totem before I started Rhythmbox just after the fresh install. Amarok has been playing for 3 and a half hours thus far - one or 2 momentary skips in play, but no freeze and system more responsive than with amarok (as in when minimise and maximise apps) What I would expect to happen - continual playback for several years if need be ! [Bug 219848] Re: rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot
Hello I have just wiped the previous installation and redone a clean one, with no change to default that might impact on the rhythmbox player in any way. All the music files I have in /home/user/Music are now purely ogg files, so no new codecs required (thereby canceling out that variable) - all updates have been applied. The only added extra is the nvidia module. The only console changes are the usual reduction in timeout of sudoers file and the re-arrangement of the grub list to put XP first. Now I just have to see if this will still freeze, or not. [Bug 131389] Re: grub should "silently succeed"
Hello I far prefer **not** having that short, rather scruffy font telling me that grub is loading - I have tried out several other distros and thus far only debian and the ubuntu-based distros do this - it just looks amateurish. [Bug 112484] Re: audio skips under IO load, doesn't resume where it stopped
I have even got a skip when merely minimising or maximising another app - for example my typical session would include rhythmbox, evolution, pidgin and firefox - I have not yet fiddled with any of the services as yet - to improve matters, but in any case this is a reasonably responsive system in XP (pentium 4 2.66 Ghz cpu with 768 megs ram with an FX550 nvidia graphics card) - granted not fancy, but not a dog. This is a totally fresh stock standard install, plus all updates of the Hardy release candidate - only one thing has been added - the nvidia module so I don't have to reset the monitor when I boot between Winxp and Ubuntu. The sound files are pure ogg so no new codecs have been added either. I really think the buffer size could be increased, or allow the user to increase it in the settings someplace. cheers -- audio skips under IO load, doesn't resume where it stopped https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112484 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

OK I have removed the following services from startup: Bluetooth device management CPU frequency management Power management - apmd (acpid is left on) Printer service and then from the user's session options I removed: Bluetooth manager Evolution alarm notifier Network manager applet Power manager Print queue applet Tracker Tracker applet the result has been that I can minimise and maximise frantically - with no skipping. the snag I have here is that while I personally don't need these services, a laptop user might, or an office worker - so there does need to be some way to allow rhythmbox to be more "forgiving". thanks for the hard work ! -- audio skips under IO load, doesn't resume where it stopped https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/112484 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Just a thought - the freeze occurred on an mp3 file - and it does not seem to matter which mp3 file - I have restarted the process further down the list to see if that too will cause a freeze on some arbitrary mp3 file. [Bug 219848] Re: rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot
OK back again I did all the updates released 22 april on a system that is still a default - no new apps added (apart from Bluefish, which should have no impact on a sound app in any case), and only the recommended codecs as suggested by the system to play my files (Gstreamers) . I trashed all mp3 files in my music folder, leaving only ogg files, restarted Rhythmbox and within 10 minutes Rhythmbox had frozen, once again, all sound is locked and cannot play movie files. All other apps seem unaffected however. Just for the record, I usually use Amarok, or before that xmms, and have never experienced this constant freeze before. The mp3 files and ogg files are ones that I listen to often, whatever system I use. What makes it even more frustrating is the otherwise total stability of the rest of my applications ! Re: [Bug 219848] Re: rhythmbox freezes after playing for an hour or more and locks all sound until reboot
Hello Anton I have to say that the answer was **definitely** setting up sound to use alsa only - as soon as I did this all issues vanished - oh and as a bonus, audacity (set up to use alsa) worked too - I am at present running Mandriva One, and I have done the same here specifically to use audacity in this case, as the crashing never showed here (but the inability of audacity to use pulse audio was identical) - I assume the variation of pulse audio is different ? If you really need me to check this I am willing to wipe Mandriva and re-install Ubuntu to help - but ideally only if you have need of my info. Hello Anton I went to the link supplied, and no the bug is not the same - the only issue I had (asides from audacity not function with pulse) is that I would be playing sounds off the hard drive for a while and suddenly all would be quiet - the rhythmbox would be nonresponsive - I would kill it, but still no sounds in any way, not at all. [Bug 98829] Re: Gaim will crashes when I logon with QQ account.
I'm sorry. I have deleted gaim beta 6 and install beta 5. I need QQ to keep in touch with my friends. -- Gaim will crashes when I logon with QQ account. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/98829 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 478710] Re: dvd::rip does not complete ripping of disc via gui in karmic
Just another comment: I was able to get the vob files onto the hard drive and in Totem the vid played from the beginning, however when dvdrip had finished encoding the avi file, the vid started at around 10 minutes into the vid. -- dvd::rip does not complete ripping of disc via gui in karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/478710 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 478710] Re: dvd::rip does not complete ripping of disc via gui in karmic
Hi Luke Sorry, but could you elaborate a bit ? What does having PSU enabled mean in this context ? Where would I check for that ? I am not a total newbie in Linux, but this is my first laptop and first double processor. I am running on a core 2 laptop (Ubuntu sees 2 CPUs as per the system monitor) with 2 GB of RAM which is plugged into mains when doing anything power hungry like this. The OS is 32 bit Ubuntu 9.10. I usually leave the machine undisturbed when running dvd::rip. On my old Pentium 4 with one CPU I always found dvd::rip very reliable, so am wondering if the double CPU is throwing the process off in some way ? When ripping a vid, dvd::rip always seems to stop at around the 85 % - 95 % mark in the ripping progress bar. I then save the project and close dvd::rip, else I cannot go any further as the buttons related to the next steps in the process are greyed out. When i restart, the greyed out buttons are now usable. the point i am trying to make is that the rip of the vob files works fine, as tested in a vid player where both the beginning and the end of the vid are in place, but when encoded to avi format, it would appear that the 10% - 15% that dvd::rip thinks has not been ripped is somehow related to the missing bit in the beginning of the vid. [Bug 478710] Re: dvd::rip does not complete ripping of disc via gui in karmic
Hi Luke Just a quick query: Would the fact that I am running a 32-bit OS on a machine that ideally should have a 64-bit OS make any difference ? I opted for 32-bit for program compatibility but maybe it does not run CPU intensive tasks quite as accurately ? [Bug 472909] Re: rhythmbox crashes on changing volume
Thanks for the suggestion, however hanging the volume via the panel icon is easy enough for now - I merely submitted the bug report in the hopes of a fix at some point and thereby improving Ubuntu. [Bug 255768] Re: evolution asking for a password, even though it should be remembered
second update this time definitely evolution is the issue. a pop-up happened asking for evolution to get permission to access the keyring - I hit deny and then the "type in your password" dialogue appears, BUT the password IS already there... it would appear that the delay of the email server responding causes evolution to request the password, in this instance.
