OK back again - I did a fresh install in the hopes of narrowing down what is causing the problem.
I also documented exactly what packages were installed after the installation, tested 3 different mpegs each time something was installed, both before and after a boo - see attachedt. The final result seems to be that installation of gstreamer from the bad set, or one of the dependencies is at fault.
