...and back again - just a bit of clarification: I tried a number of mpeg files, all around the same size of 600 - 700 megs and all failed to right-click properties in the previous install.
There was also a problem with trying to burn them to CD, in that when attempting to make a data cd using brasero, as soon as I chose one of those files, brasero would grey-out too and I would need to force quit - I was able to burn the files using nero in xp however, so the files themselves were not at fault.
