[Bug 280805] Re: nvidia graphics driver 177.80 on geforce 8400 makes fan spin all the time

2008-11-12 Thread Giles Malet
Sadly, having had a few days experience with this, I must now report
that the `solution' is not perfect. If I hibernate or suspend the
laptop, when it wakes up the fan does its old on for a while, off for a
second behaviour. I notice though that i8kmon shows 0 degrees for the
temp after the wakeup, so I suspect it is no longer controlling the fan,
although running i8kfan works to turn it off (for about a second).

In desperation I switched to the old nvidia driver, then removed it
completely (I'm now running the open source `nv' driver) -- but the bad
fan behaviour remains! So I suspect the A13, or perhaps specifically the
A12, BIOS update is partly responsible.

Another theory being propounded is that the `powermgmt' package in the
new Ubuntu is causing problems. I shall investigate that path next. I'm
still sceptical that Dell/Nvidia would be dumb enough to force such
behaviour on users, but I've been wrong before!

This is all rather annoying and confusing.

[Bug 379057] Re: Virtualbox OSE mouse integration doesn't work in Jaunty guests

2009-06-03 Thread Giles Weaver
The vboxmouse driver wasn't in xorg.conf. Running that script adds the
driver and solves the problem, thanks.

It would be good if the VirtualBox mouse driver was automatically enabled.
Mouse integration worked without manually modifying the xorg.conf in previous
versions of Ubuntu, so I regard this as a regression.

[Bug 379057] [NEW] Virtualbox OSE mouse integration doesn't work in Jaunty guests

2009-05-21 Thread Giles Weaver
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: virtualbox-ose

I'm using VirtualBox OSE 2.1.4 on an Ubuntu 9.04 (64bit) host.
virtualbox-ose-guest-utils seems to be fully functional on Ubuntu 8.04.2 and
8.10 (both 64bit) guests, but not under either of my Ubuntu 9.04 or 9.10 alpha
(also both 64bit) guests. I can resize the display, but the mouse integration
doesn't work. The mouse is captured instead. I've double checked that I've
installed DKMS, virtualbox-ose-guest-utils and the guestadditions package from
the ISO, but still no joy.

[Bug 394656] [NEW] [needs-packaging] Bowtie - biological sequence aligner

2009-07-02 Thread Giles Weaver
Public bug reported:

Bowtie is a popular bioinformatics package, which is very useful to
informaticians working with sequence data from the latest DNA sequencing
machines.

Source code is available from:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/bowtie-bio/files/

Description:
Bowtie is an ultrafast, memory-efficient short read aligner. It aligns short
DNA sequences (reads) to the human genome at a rate of over 25 million 35-bp
reads per hour. Bowtie indexes the genome with a Burrows-Wheeler index to keep
its memory footprint small: typically about 2.2 GB for the human genome (2.9 GB
for paired-end). It supports alignment policies equivalent to Maq and SOAP but
is substantially faster.

2009-05-08 Thread Giles Weaver
I have the same device

1131:1001 Integrated System Solution Corp. KY-BT100 Bluetooth Adapter

It works with Ubuntu 9.04, but not for very long:(
It times out after a short time when I use it to connect to my Sony-Ericcson

I think that there is still a bluetooth stack issue under Jaunty, though the
situation is improved as compared to 8.10.

[Bug 133033] Re: [needs-packaging] DVBCut - DVB FreeView MPEG-TS Editing

2008-10-11 Thread Giles Weaver
Fantastic, I've just tested it and it works great.
I did have an error in Synaptic during installation, but I think it was just
because the update manager was running at the same time.

Shame DVBCut looks so clunky, but its a really good bit of software!

Thanks:-)

[Bug 280805] Re: nvidia graphics driver 177.80 on geforce 8400 makes fan spin all the time

2008-11-07 Thread Giles Malet
Having just upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10, I hit this spinning fan problem on
a Dell Latitude D630 laptop. The problem appears to have been introduced
by the upgrade of the Nvidia driver from version 173 to 177. Graphics is
provided by an nVidia Quadro NVS 135M.

Searching for answers I found
http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2008/08/18/nvidia-gpu-update-
dell-to-offer-warranty-enhancement-to-all-affected-customers-
worldwide.aspx - which implicates nVidia.

My BIOS was version A02, so upgraded to the latest (A13). I noticed in
the release notes for the previous version (A12) at
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R190175&SystemID=LATITUDE
D630&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=13457&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=12&catid=1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=1&fileid=261129
(!) that there's this comment:

Fixes/Enhancements
--
1. Updated Intel Video BIOS.
2. Updated Nvidia Video BIOS.
3. Enhancement for thermal control.

The BIOS seems to have fixed the problem! I've been watching the system
with i8kmon and it seems to be behaving reasonably (with the fan off
most of the time).

Hope this information is useful.

[Bug 190588] Re: After upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy, Gutsy boot drops to initramfs

2008-10-07 Thread Brett Giles
Just a further note that the initial machine I reported this on turned
out to have a totally trashed IDE controller. I tried reformatting /
reinstalling and nothing worked. I took the drives out and used them in
USB enclosures and 1 had been fried.

So - hardware issue - i guess the only bug might be managing to
intercept the IO errors that should have been occurring somewhere.

[Bug 325083] [NEW] network manager doesn't connect to wireless networks until a user session starts

2009-02-03 Thread Ralph Giles
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Network manager doesn't seem to connect to wifi until a user session
starts. This makes logging in remotely to diagnose X11 failures
problematic. Also, for example. ubuntu-bug isn't useful without a
network connection, which likely isn't active if one boots in recovery
mode.

Since most laptop access is by wireless these days, I suggest this isn't
optimal behaviour.

This has other advantages, such as allowing the system update checks to
complete in the background if the user doesn't log in immediately.

[Bug 325101] [NEW] x11 won't start after upgrade to jaunty

2009-02-03 Thread Ralph Giles
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Last week I upgraded from intrepid to jaunty. After the reboot, X11
failed to start. It looks like it tried a few times before giving up.
That is, after the splash logo and boot progress bar, it alternated
several times between a black screen and a corrupt version of the
previous session, then stopped. Didn't respond to ctrl-alt-shift-f1.

Rebooting in recovery mode, Xorg.0.log mentions a segfault. I tried
ubuntu-bug, but w3m doesn't seem to interact usefully with launchpad. Or
I hit the wrong key. Anyway, I'll try to attach useful info after
creating the bug.

The crash is in the wacom driver. I didn't find a debug package for it,

After removing the wacom sections from my xorg.conf, gdm started

I built and installed an unstripped version of the xserver-xorg-input-

wacom entries in xorg.conf. Ugh.

Attaching a new Xorg.0.log from the run with the self-built wacom driver
and the xorg.conf_20090204 above. It doesn't try to open
/dev/input/wacom at all. Maybe I just built the package incorrectly?

Anyway, back to you. I can use my system again, but it would be nice to
track this down: pretty hopeless upgrade experience. :-(

Hi Tim,

That is a very good point. It's something I run once a month in the middle

[Bug 328167] Re: gnome-keyring-daemon eating 100% CPU at login in Jaunty

2009-03-03 Thread Ralph Giles
I have a very similar problem on x86_64, gnome-keyring 2.25.92-0ubuntu1.
Sometimes when I log in gnome-keyring-daemon is hung using 100% cpu.
Sometimes it works for a while, then hangs when asked for a key by an
ssh invocation. I've only had the problem since upgrading to jaunty last
week.

Attaching with gdb I got the following backtrace:

(gdb) bt
#0 0x7fed5df57496 in poll () from /lib/libc.so.6
#1 0x0046ebd0 in ?? ()
#2 0x7fed5e44670f in ?? () from /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so.0

#8 0x001c in ?? ()
#9 0x0003 in ?? ()
#10 0x7fff67a5af2e in ?? ()
#11 0x in ?? ()

Is there a work-around for this? My development environment is
effectively unusable without an ssh key-agent, and since restarting a
global agent requires logging out, I consider this a very serious issue.

[Bug 182623] Re: libjpeg conflict in libgs

2009-04-15 Thread Ralph Giles
Weird. I'd expect the jpeg symbols in gs to be resolved against the
internal versions when the library is linked. Would it help to supply an
exported symbol list? That would break anyone trying to use the graphics
library directly, of course.

Ghostscript can actually link against the system libjpeg, but at the
cost of not being able to support some files. The DCTDecode filter in
Postscript was finalized before the baseline jpeg standard, and block
runs are allowed to be longer that stock libjpeg will accept. It's just
a define change, but that's why we compile against an internal version.

As I said, from Citrix technical support. I suggest that you get in
touch with the administrators of the Citrix hosts that you are using and
ask them to get you build 10.38 or later. But I am surprised that the
work around is not working. The variable needs to be defined when the

[Bug 156541] Re: switching compiz viewports causes citrix ica client to be lost

2008-09-06 Thread Giles Atkinson
In the previous post, the quoted comment actually refers to another
issue: the Program Neighborhood Agent login window in the Citrix client
program (wfcmgr) shrinks to an unusable button with Compiz. A possible
workround for lost windows for Citrix sessions is to use the Restore
button in wfcmgr's Tools->Connection Center window.

[Bug 58397] Preseeding partman-auto is broken

2006-08-31 Thread Giles Hall
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: partman-auto

I have tried many, many different variants on the following preseed
configuration:

# Partitioning
d-i partman-auto/disk string /dev/sda
d-i partman-auto/choose_recipe select cn_recipe
d-i partman-auto/expert_recipe string \

format{ } \
.
d-i partman/confirm_write_new_label boolean true
d-i partman/choose_partition select Finish partitioning and write changes to
disk
d-i partman/confirm boolean true

It doesn't matter if I use this recipe or a built in recipe. The
conclusion is always the same, the installer reports:

"""
[!!] Partition disks
No root file system is defined.
Please correct this from the partitioning menu.

"""

I suspect that the current versions of partman for dapper make auto
preseeding an install totally impossible.

[Bug 155870] [needs-packaging] TrueCrypt

2007-10-22 Thread Giles Weaver
Public bug reported:

TrueCrypt (http://www.truecrypt.org/downloads.php) is popular Free open-source
disk encryption software for Windows Vista/XP/2000 and Linux.
TrueCrypt packages for Ubuntu can be obtained, but it isn't available through

[Bug 153765] Re: internal jasper should be patched for CVE-2007-2721

2007-10-18 Thread Ralph Giles
Thanks for the prompt response!

There are two main issues: One is a patch for handling broken streams
produced by certain popular authoring software. Upstream rejected the
patch because it increases memory footprint (a "you can free this" tag
is incorrect in these files). A combination of not-my-problem and the
usual tension between a reference implementation and liberal acceptance
for applications. The jpeg2k implementation in libpoppler works around
such files in the same way.

Analysis and patch here:
http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=687416

The second is a patch to add support for returning raw palette data,
which is required by the PDF spec. I haven't tried getting this one
upstream.

Since then our fork has diverged a bit more (error reporting through a
callback instead of printf() and assert() and some optimizations, both
of which are most important on Windows) but the API difference can be
ifdef'd around. So lInking with the system libjasper could be done at
the expense of handling these files. Or you could apply our patches to
your libjasper. The two specific ones mentioned above are ABI
compatible.

I hope to try again for upstream inclusion when I get a chance to merge
our changes into the 1.900.1 release.

[Bug 183061] Re: Linksys WUSB54GS v2 does not work with ubuntu

2008-04-15 Thread Giles Clermont
I have a wusb54gs and I used the how to also. I did have a problem with
it not restarting at login. What I did to fix it was to add this line
to /etc/rc.local "ifconfig wlan0 up" without the quotes and I have had
no problems since. I am using 7.10 with all patches and latest kernel.

[Bug 202931] Re: ejecting a CD/DVD with drive button gives always an error message but still works

2008-04-27 Thread Giles Clermont
after much searching with google someone suggested changing my fstab. So
i did.

#/dev/hdc /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0 (this is what I used in
gutsy)
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0

I changed the hdc to scd0 and now the eject button works. It auto mounts
the cd and I can eject a mounted cd with nautilus, but when I use
nautilus to eject the cd without a cd in it it errors out. At least I
can now eject a cd and mount them. Did my fstab not get upgraded
properly? (I want a edit button.)

[Bug 130842] Re: [ia64] Ghostscript always crashes immediately on ia64, causing several build failures

2007-09-08 Thread Ralph Giles
Alex: did you only try the default build? It's perhaps not clear, but
the issue is with the Ubuntu package, which uses a (patched) so build.

Till provides the following instructions:

apt-get source ghostscript

to download the source package of Ghostscript.

Then enter the package source directory

cd ghostscript-8.60*

See the patches in debian/patches/ build instructions in debian/rules
and the build via

dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot

Allow core dumping with

ulimit -c

Then execute the program with

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=./sobin/ sobin/gsx
and start the debugger with

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=./sobin/ gdb -c core sobin/gsx

Under Ubuntu Ghostscript is built for maximum flexibility. The
./configure command line is:

LDFLAGS="-lpaper" ./configure --prefix=/usr --mandir=/usr/share/man \
--infodir=/usr/share/info \
--with-ijs --with-jbig2dec --with-jasper --with-x \
--disable-gtk \
--enable-dynamic --with-omni --enable-cups \
--disable-compile-inits \
--with-drivers=ALL \
--with-fontpath=/var/lib/defoma/gs.d/dirs/fonts:/usr/share/cups/fonts:/usr/share
+/ghostscript/fonts:/usr/local/lib/ghostscript/fonts:/usr/share/font

Note that for our package to build we do not use a simple "make" after
"./configure" but

make so
make obj/X11.so

[Bug 133033] DVBCut - DVB FreeView MPEG-TS Editing

2007-08-16 Thread Giles Weaver
Public bug reported:

This is an excellent bit of software that allows editing of MPEG-TS recordings
from FreeView or other DVB TV cards.
It can be used to edit out adverts and convert MPEG-TS to MPEG files that are
compatible with standard media players and DVD players.
DVBCut will be an invaluable tool to people with Digital TV cards - they just
don't know it yet!

Source code and a 32 bit Debian package that works with Ubuntu can be found at
the DVBCut website (http://dvbcut.sourceforge.net/).
There isn't a 64 bit package currently available.

Description:

dvbcut is a Qt application that allows you to select certain parts of an
MPEG transport stream (as received via Digital Video Broadcasting, DVB)
and save these parts into a single MPEG output file. It follows a
"keyhole surgery" approach where the input video and audio data is
mostly kept unchanged, and only very few frames at the beginning and/or
end of the selected range are re-encoded in order to obtain a valid MPEG
file.

[Bug 130842] Re: [ia64] Ghostscript always crashes immediately on ia64, causing several build failures

2007-09-17 Thread Ralph Giles
The problem is that 06_libpaper_support.dpatch calls systempapersize()
from libpaper without including paper.h. The return value is then read
as an int instead of a pointer, which apparently doesn't work on ia64.

I've attached an updated patch. Please verify and update the package as
appropriate.

[Bug 48773] Re: Mouse doesn't get turned off on system shutdown

2007-08-14 Thread Giles Weaver
Same problem. All USB devices (mouse, external hard disk etc) are powered on
after system shutdown. Windows shutdown turns all USB devices off.
Motherboard: Epox on nForce4 chipset, Ubuntu 7.04 i386, kernel 2.6.20-16-generic

Hopefully this will be fixed in a timely fashion with a new Kernel...

[Bug 79339] Mouse button support

2007-08-14 Thread Giles Weaver
This is a very common problem that is discussed in the forums.
There is even a how-to on getting mouse buttons working at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ManyButtonsMouseHowto.

Apparently it isn't to hard to edit the xorg.conf to support all mice
buttons, but a lot of people are of the opinion that this shouldn't be
necessary. Its a step too far for a lot of newbies.

Ideally what is needed is a nice simple gui to configure the xorg.conf
(and Nautilus) to support mice with more than three buttons. Editing of
the xorg.conf monitor configurations would also be very useful.

[Bug 197292] Re: Firefox crashes when using citrix

2008-03-04 Thread Giles Atkinson
Leo,

It is not clear what the connection is between the crashing Firefox
process and your Citrix session. If you are starting the session with
Firefox (which then crashes), then I would expect to see the Citrix ICA
client plugin listed in pluginreg.dat, but it's not there.
Alternatively, you could have configured the browser with the ICA client
as a helper application, or be doing something else entirely. Please
clarify. Putting "about:plugins" into Firefox's URI entry is probably
the most reliable way to detect the plugin.

[Bug 78470] Re: switching to current logged in user freezes gdm

2008-02-05 Thread Giles Weaver
I have the switch user white screen problem as described by exactt as well, but
I wouldn't call it the white screen of death.
I recently discovered that if I type in the correct password and hit return I
am logged back in to user A's session, so the problem is just that the
screensaver login box (and black background) aren't being drawn.

I guess that people are seeing either white screens or black screens
dependant on their video hardware, but the bug is quite possibly the
same. I had this problem in 7.04 as well. I think, but I can't be
certain that both 7.04 and 7.10 developed this problem some time after
installation, possibly after I fiddled with some graphics settings.

[Bug 190588] [NEW] After upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy, Gutsy boot drops to initramfs

2008-02-09 Thread Brett Giles
Public bug reported:

I upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy, but there were numerous errors during the
upgrade process.
Eventually, I was able to recover the upgrade via the standard:
  apt-get --configure -a
  apt-get update
  apt-get dist-upgrade

However, any boot to kernel 2.6.22-14 would display the ubuntu splash
screen, show the progress bar for a few seconds and then drop back to
the initramfs / ash prompt.

I do appear to be able to see /dev/disk etc. from there. I tried
modprobe of various ide modules to no avail.

I have tried a dpkg-reconfigure on linux-kernel-2.6.22-14 and the
associated restricted modules (I used Nvidia drivers).

I have also tried a manual mkinitramfs and depmod and update-grub, all
with the same results.

The machine is about 3 years old, ide only, nforce2 chipset and includes
a promise 20269 with two drives. /root is on /dev/hda7 off the mainboard
controller. I have had edgy and fiesty running successfully on the
machine. I am now using the Feisty kernel (2.6.20) to run.

[Bug 109701] Re: [needs-packaging] Truecrypt

2008-02-12 Thread Giles Weaver
Ok, so if you are going to package Truecrypt are you going to choose:

4.3a) no gui, but full cli support. (ext2/3 & gui support through
easycrypt)

5) kernel abstraction and gui but only partial cli support, no ext2/3
support.

Hopefully by the time someone comes to package it there will be a
Truecrypt 5.1 with all of the above features...

[Bug 151636] Re: [Gutsy] compiz vanishes when switching virtual desktops

2007-10-31 Thread Ralph Giles
I can confirm with the released Gutsy. Clicking on the Workspace
Switcher makes everything but the wallpaper disappear. No desktop icons,
no panel, no right-click desktop menu.

Running 'killall -HUP gnome-panel' from an ssh session recovers display
of the panel, and from there the original workspace and window set can
be recovered. After that, switching by clicking on the applet generally
works, but it's glitchy, and windows often move around or are hidden
after a switch.

ctrl+alt+arrowkey doesn't work at all for me under gtk-window-decorator.

The Workspace Switcher applet also only shows windows for the current
desktop.

This is x86_64 with the nvidia proprietary driver, displaying on two
heads under TwinView. Also upgraded from Feisty.

[Bug 48773] Re: Mouse doesn't get turned off on system shutdown

2007-12-11 Thread Giles Weaver
Yep, same thing happens on my Nforce4 motherboard. This bug may be a
result of a faulty BIOS, but my guess is that a very large proportion of
BIOSes are faulty!

If a kernel workaround can solve the problem I think it should be done.
After all if Microsoft can shutdown USB devices properly, Linux should
be able to do the same.

[Bug 197700] Re: Upgrade to Hardy: ICA Client not working anymore

2008-03-17 Thread Giles Atkinson
It's actually a problem with the new Xcb-based implementation of Xlib.
It is doing some internal locking for multi-threaded use and gets into a
situation where the sigle thread sets the display lock against itself.
On the other hand, that only happens becuase the ICA client uses an Xlib
event function in a very unusual way. A version of the ICA client that
resolves the problem is available from Citrix tech. support.

You are right, giving the end user choice is always good.
However, Truecrypt 5.1a is now available and it has all of the knobs and
whistles (and cli support) of previous versions. So as far as I am aware there

[Bug 561323] Re: Thunderbird exits immediately without error message

2010-05-06 Thread Giles Weaver
I had this problem when launching Thunderbird from the menu, but not from the
command line.
Running Thunderbird in safe-mode solved the problem, and I tracked down the bug
to the Lightning extension by disabling the extensions and re-enabling them one
by one.
The strange thing is that after using the calendar within Thunderbird +
Lightning from the command line, the problem went away, and I am currently able
to use Thunderbird with Lightning from the menu.

Very strange. I can only presume that Lightning rewrote some display
settings when I used the calendar.

I think the text is the same or similar to that in Daniels screenshot, but with
one line of text superimposed over another.

[Bug 561323] Re: Thunderbird exits immediately without error message

2010-05-13 Thread Giles Weaver
For some reason Thunderbird now crashes with a segfault on startup, where it
crashed silently before. Thunderbird seems reliable with the Lightning add-on
disabled.
Fingers crossed the (Mozilla) release version of Lightning 1 will solve these
issues..

[Bug 561323] Re: Thunderbird exits immediately without error message

2010-05-13 Thread Giles Weaver
Thunderbird hasn't crashed since disabling Lightning, so it does seem
that while the symptoms are the same, I'm experiencing a different bug.
My last post was meant to be informational, rather than a request to re-
open this bug.

[Bug 578158] Re: Gnote data loss: some of my notes are missing

2010-06-06 Thread Giles Weaver
I eventually discovered my old notes deep in a hidden folder. I can't remember
the location, but I think it was somewhere under ~/.local
Copying the notes over to the .gnote folder brought them back.

[Bug 578158] [NEW] Gnote data loss: some of my notes are missing

2010-05-10 Thread Giles Weaver
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnote

I've been using Gnote since February, having previously used Tomboy.
Gnote imported my notes from Tomboy without any problems. After
upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04 Gnote appears to have lost all the notes
I'd made since February.

I assume that Gnote has re-imported notes from Tomboy, and discarded my
newer notes.
