[Bug 280805] Re: nvidia graphics driver 177.80 on geforce 8400 makes fan spin all the time
Sadly, having had a few days experience with this, I must now report that the `solution' is not perfect. If I hibernate or suspend the laptop, when it wakes up the fan does its old on for a while, off for a second behaviour. I notice though that i8kmon shows 0 degrees for the temp after the wakeup, so I suspect it is no longer controlling the fan, although running i8kfan works to turn it off (for about a second). In desperation I switched to the old nvidia driver, then removed it completely (I'm now running the open source `nv' driver) -- but the bad fan behaviour remains! So I suspect the A13, or perhaps specifically the A12, BIOS update is partly responsible. Another theory being propounded is that the `powermgmt' package in the new Ubuntu is causing problems. I shall investigate that path next. I'm still sceptical that Dell/Nvidia would be dumb enough to force such behaviour on users, but I've been wrong before! This is all rather annoying and confusing. gdm -- nvidia graphics driver 177.80 on geforce 8400 makes fan spin all the time https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/280805 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 280805] Re: nvidia graphics driver 177.80 on geforce 8400 makes fan spin all the time
Having just upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10, I hit this spinning fan problem on a Dell Latitude D630 laptop. The problem appears to have been introduced by the upgrade of the Nvidia driver from version 173 to 177. Graphics is provided by an nVidia Quadro NVS 135M. Searching for answers I found http://direct2dell.com/one2one/archive/2008/08/18/nvidia-gpu-update- dell-to-offer-warranty-enhancement-to-all-affected-customers- worldwide.aspx - which implicates nVidia. My BIOS was version A02, so upgraded to the latest (A13). I noticed in the release notes for the previous version (A12) at http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R190175&SystemID=LATITUDE D630&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=13457&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=12&catid=1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=1&fileid=261129 (!) that there's this comment: Fixes/Enhancements -- 1. Updated Intel Video BIOS. 2. Updated Nvidia Video BIOS. 3. Enhancement for thermal control. The BIOS seems to have fixed the problem! I've been watching the system with i8kmon and it seems to be behaving reasonably (with the fan off most of the time). [Bug 325083] [NEW] network manager doesn't connect to wireless networks until a user session starts
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: network-manager Network manager doesn't seem to connect to wifi until a user session starts. This makes logging in remotely to diagnose X11 failures problematic. Also, for example. ubuntu-bug isn't useful without a network connection, which likely isn't active if one boots in recovery mode. [Bug 325101] [NEW] x11 won't start after upgrade to jaunty
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Last week I upgraded from intrepid to jaunty. After the reboot, X11 failed to start. It looks like it tried a few times before giving up. That is, after the splash logo and boot progress bar, it alternated several times between a black screen and a corrupt version of the previous session, then stopped. Weird. I'd expect the jpeg symbols in gs to be resolved against the internal versions when the library is linked. Would it help to supply an exported symbol list? [Bug 153765] Re: internal jasper should be patched for CVE-2007-2721
Thanks for the prompt response! There are two main issues: One is a patch for handling broken streams produced by certain popular authoring software. Upstream rejected the patch because it increases memory footprint (a "you can free this" tag is incorrect in these files). A combination of not-my-problem and the usual tension between a reference implementation and liberal acceptance for applications. The jpeg2k implementation in libpoppler works around such files in the same way. Analysis and patch here: http://bugs.ghostscript.com/show_bug.cgi?id=687416 The second is a patch to add support for returning raw palette data, which is required by the PDF spec. I haven't tried getting this one upstream. Since then our fork has diverged a bit more (error reporting through a callback instead of printf() and assert() and some optimizations, both of which are most important on Windows) but the API difference can be ifdef'd around. So lInking with the system libjasper could be done at the expense of handling these files. Or you could apply our patches to your libjasper. The two specific ones mentioned above are ABI compatible. I hope to try again for upstream inclusion when I get a chance to merge our changes into the 1.900.1 release. -- internal jasper should be patched for CVE-2007-2721 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/153765 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 202931] Re: ejecting a CD/DVD with drive button gives always an error message but still works
after much searching with google someone suggested changing my fstab. So i did. #/dev/hdc /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user, noauto 0 0 (this is what I used in gutsy) /dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user, noauto 0 0 I changed the hdc to scd0 and now the eject button works. It auto mounts the cd and I can eject a mounted cd with nautilus, but when I use nautilus to eject the cd without a cd in it it errors out. At least I can now eject a cd and mount them. Did my fstab not get upgraded properly? [Bug 130842] Re: [ia64] Ghostscript always crashes immediately on ia64, causing several build failures
Alex: did you only try the default build? It's perhaps not clear, but the issue is with the Ubuntu package, which uses a (patched) so build. Till provides the following instructions: apt-get source ghostscript to download the source package of Ghostscript. Then enter the package source directory cd ghostscript-8.60* See the patches in debian/patches/ build instructions in debian/rules and the build via dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot Allow core dumping with ulimit -c Then execute the program with LD_LIBRARY_PATH=./sobin/ sobin/gsx and start the debugger with LD_LIBRARY_PATH=./sobin/ gdb -c core sobin/gsx Under Ubuntu Ghostscript is built for maximum flexibility. The ./configure command line is: LDFLAGS="-lpaper" ./configure --prefix=/usr --mandir=/usr/share/man \ --infodir=/usr/share/info \ --with-ijs --with-jbig2dec --with-jasper --with-x \ --disable-gtk \ --enable-dynamic --with-omni --enable-cups \ --disable-compile-inits \ --with-drivers=ALL \ --with-fontpath=/var/lib/defoma/gs.d/dirs/fonts:/usr/share/cups/fonts:/usr/share +/ghostscript/fonts:/usr/local/lib/ghostscript/fonts:/usr/share/font Note that for our package to build we do not use a simple "make" after "./configure" but make so make obj/X11.so -- [ia64] Ghostscript always crashes immediately on ia64, causing several build failures https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/130842 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 133033] DVBCut - DVB FreeView MPEG-TS Editing
Public bug reported: This is an excellent bit of software that allows editing of MPEG-TS recordings from FreeView or other DVB TV cards. It can be used to edit out adverts and convert MPEG-TS to MPEG files that are compatible with standard media players and DVD players. DVBCut will be an invaluable tool to people with Digital TV cards - they just don't know it yet! Source code and a 32 bit Debian package that works with Ubuntu can be found at the DVBCut website (http://dvbcut.sourceforge.net/). There isn't a 64 bit package currently available. Description: dvbcut is a Qt application that allows you to select certain parts of an MPEG transport stream (as received via Digital Video Broadcasting, DVB) and save these parts into a single MPEG output file. It follows a "keyhole surgery" approach where the input video and audio data is mostly kept unchanged, and only very few frames at the beginning and/or end of the selected range are re-encoded in order to obtain a valid MPEG file. ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Wishlist Status: New ** Tags: needs-packaging ** Summary changed: - DVBCut - DVB FreeView MPEG-TS Editing + [needs-packaging] DVBCut - DVB FreeView MPEG-TS Editing -- [needs-packaging] DVBCut - DVB FreeView MPEG-TS Editing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/133033 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 130842] Re: [ia64] Ghostscript always crashes immediately on ia64, causing several build failures
The problem is that 06_libpaper_support.dpatch calls systempapersize() from libpaper without including paper.h. The return value is then read as an int instead of a pointer, which apparently doesn't work on ia64. I've attached an updated patch. [Bug 79339] Mouse button support
This is a very common problem that is discussed in the forums. There is even a how-to on getting mouse buttons working at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ManyButtonsMouseHowto. Apparently it isn't to hard to edit the xorg.conf to support all mice buttons, but a lot of people are of the opinion that this shouldn't be necessary. Its a step too far for a lot of newbies. [Bug 197292] Re: Firefox crashes when using citrix
Leo, It is not clear what the connection is between the crashing Firefox process and your Citrix session. If you are starting the session with Firefox (which then crashes), then I would expect to see the Citrix ICA client plugin listed in pluginreg.dat, but it's not there. Alternatively, you could have configured the browser with the ICA client as a helper application, or be doing something else entirely. Please clarify. Putting "about:plugins" into Firefox's URI entry is probably the most reliable way to detect the plugin. [Bug 78470] Re: switching to current logged in user freezes gdm
I have the switch user white screen problem as described by exactt as well, but I wouldn't call it the white screen of death. I recently discovered that if I type in the correct password and hit return I am logged back in to user A's session, so the problem is just that the screensaver login box (and black background) aren't being drawn. I guess that people are seeing either white screens or black screens dependant on their video hardware, but the bug is quite possibly the same. I had this problem in 7.04 as well. I think, but I can't be certain that both 7.04 and 7.10 developed this problem some time after installation, possibly after I fiddled with some graphics settings. -- switching to current logged in user freezes gdm https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/78470 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 190588] [NEW] After upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy, Gutsy boot drops to initramfs
Public bug reported: I upgraded from Feisty to Gutsy, but there were numerous errors during the upgrade process. Eventually, I was able to recover the upgrade via the standard: apt-get --configure -a apt-get update apt-get dist-upgrade However, any boot to kernel 2.6.22-14 would display the ubuntu splash screen, show the progress bar for a few seconds and then drop back to the initramfs / ash prompt. I do appear to be able to see /dev/disk etc. from there. I tried modprobe of various ide modules to no avail. I have tried a dpkg-reconfigure on linux-kernel-2.6.22-14 and the associated restricted modules (I used Nvidia drivers). After that, switching by clicking on the applet generally works, but it's glitchy, and windows often move around or are hidden after a switch. ctrl+alt+arrowkey doesn't work at all for me under gtk-window-decorator. The Workspace Switcher applet also only shows windows for the current desktop. This is x86_64 with the nvidia proprietary driver, displaying on two heads under TwinView. [Bug 48773] Re: Mouse doesn't get turned off on system shutdown
Yep, same thing happens on my Nforce4 motherboard. This bug may be a result of a faulty BIOS, but my guess is that a very large proportion of BIOSes are faulty! If a kernel workaround can solve the problem I think it should be done. [Bug 197700] Re: Upgrade to Hardy: ICA Client not working anymore
It's actually a problem with the new Xcb-based implementation of Xlib. It is doing some internal locking for multi-threaded use and gets into a situation where the sigle thread sets the display lock against itself. On the other hand, that only happens becuase the ICA client uses an Xlib event function in a very unusual way. A version of the ICA client that resolves the problem is available from Citrix tech. support. -- Upgrade to Hardy: ICA Client not working anymore https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/197700 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 561323] Re: Thunderbird exits immediately without error message
I had this problem when launching Thunderbird from the menu, but not from the command line. Running Thunderbird in safe-mode solved the problem, and I tracked down the bug to the Lightning extension by disabling the extensions and re-enabling them one by one. The strange thing is that after using the calendar within Thunderbird + Lightning from the command line, the problem went away, and I am currently able to use Thunderbird with Lightning from the menu.
