I've experienced the same problem a couple of times with NetworkManager Applet 0.7.0.100 under Ubuntu 9.04. I also have 3 UK mobile broadband, but with a Huawei E160G. As reported by Emilio, my computer only hangs occasionally during reconnection attempts.
