Alec> Alec, I saw your message on debian-user and was about to reply when I saw your direct email. I bought the Lexmark Optra E312 - NOT the Optra E312L. The E312 does native postscript. It comes w/ 4Mb RAM and speaks true Postscript and PCL6. I bought this printer based on the recommendations of http://www.linuxprinting.org. You can get more info on this model from: http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=321929 http://www.lexmark.com/canada/printers/laser/Optra/E312.html I was able to get this printer kinda working with CUPS. The only problem I have with CUPS is that when I spool text files from the command line, they don't get printed out. Spooling postscript files from the command line or printing via applications that generate postscript output directly works perfectly however. Currently I have this printer configured using lprng together with magicfilter (using the psonly600 filter). With lprng+magicfilter, I can print any file from either the command line or from any application and they print perfectly. But to be perfectly honest, I don't use this printer all that much. I just noticed that the Debian unstable CUPS packages have not been updated since they are still at version 1.1.4-3 even though the upstream CUPS packages are version 1.1.6 (which have probably fixed the bug that I described above about not being able to print text files from the command line). I had sent emails to the Debian CUPS maintainer asking to update the packages to the newer upstream version, but haven't heard from him!! BTW, the printer works like a charm in Windows - I have used mine under Windows NT Workstation 4.0 and Windows 2000. Bottom line is: (1) the printer quality is excellent, and you can configure many different printing options and settings if you experiment with magicfilter, lprng, apsfilter and the plethora of printing filters and software that are available on Debian. (2) this postscript printer is a lot cheaper than a similar offering from HP (the HP 1100 I think, which when I checked about 3 months ago was approx. CDN$400 more than the Optra E312), and is excellent for home use both cost wise and quality wise. (3) having a postscript printer makes life a lot easier in UNIX-land (Linux, *BSD, Solaris, etc.) and Windows land as well. My recommendation is that if you can afford to spend the extra $75, go for it. It's worth it. Also, Lexmark has been very good about releasing drivers, albeit closed-source binary only drivers, for Linux. BTW, under Debian using lprng and magicfilter you can configure this printer (assuming you have the necessary options configured in your kernel) in less than a minute! Both the Lexmark E312L and E312 are fairly recent offerings and you should have no problem running either one on debian potato or woody or sid with kernel 2.2 or 2.4. FWIW, I am running sid with kernel 2.4.2. HTH. Regards, -- Salman Ahmed ssahmed AT pathcom DOT com

RE: Getting to the GUI...
Many thanks to all who replied; both to the reflector and directly. I would like to comment on all the replies in one message. To those of you who took the time to answer, you will see my reply to your particular comments in one of the points. (1) My only config file is /etc/X11/XF86Config. And there is a link to it in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11 (2) When running startx manually, it would dump both (**) lines and (--) lines. The (--) lines always stated that something was delete (a synonym for ignored I assume). So I assume it is indeed picking up the config file. See end of this message. (3) In XF86Free I have tried each and every given monitor as well as entering in the hsync and vsync as 30-58 and 50-90 respectively. NADA, always the connect error 11 from XF86Setup, or the "no screens found" if starting X manually. (4) Yes, I got two replies to an earlier posting that referred to adding a link. One said to "ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86Free /etc/X11/X" The other to "ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XF64_Mach64 /etc/X11/X In retrospect, given the purpose of /etc, they don't make sense but at that point I tried it anyway. There was no XF86Free in any of the directories that I have searched through so far. (5) Regarding runlevel 5. Yes, I have come from a "red hat" distro by virtue of playing with Mandrake. I will try setting it back to 2. In the short term I can certainly live with starting X manually, but ultimately I want it to boot to GUI directly. (6) Yes, why I am trying Debian is precisely that reason -- updating is purportedly much easier than in other distros. However, it would be nice to get it working!! And finally (if you will permit me a little political incorrectness and putting tongue firmly in cheek)... My wife said that all things considered she would rather see me playing with "Debbie Anne" than with "Mandrake". Ok... that was lame, but she did say it! Again thanks to all, I will keep plugging. Considering Debian
Hi all, I've been using Linux for a long time (7ish years) and for the past year have been using RedHat 6.2. Anywho, my biggest complaint with RH is regarding RPM. The case in point is that I've wanted to install some new Gnome related RPM's that require the x-devel RPMs. The problem is that I've, by hand, upgraded X to 4.0x and the needed x-devel RPMs are 3.3.6. Of course I can tell it to ignore the dependancies but then what is the point of the dependancies? So, to make a long story short, how is the Debian package manager in this regards? Do the same problems exist? How easy is it to mix package installed pieces to pieces installed by hand? Thanks, --Rainer

Re: Considering Debian
To quote "Rainer Mager" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, # So, to make a long story short, how is the Debian package manager in this # regards? Do the same problems exist? Well, understand that there are two parts to the Debian packaging system. 'apt', and 'dpkg'. 'dpkg' is roughly equivalent to function, if not in features. 'apt' is a suite of utilities, and is generally what a user would use. Debian has what are called repositories; there are local mirrors in pretty much every country(I think ;). You can 'apt-get install ', and it will resolve dependancies for you. It'll install everything needs, within limits. Sometimes two packages conflict, and sometimes you'll need to manually over-ride it(so that the other package gets removed). Anyways, it's pretty slick, compared to 'rpm' :) # How easy is it to mix package installed # pieces to pieces installed by hand? It's bad. Very bad. :) To make a long story short, just don't. If you *must* install something manually, pass "--prefix=/opt --sysconfdir=/opt/etc" or something to ./configure, to keep your own compiled apps seperate from the packaging system. A *lot* of problems that Debian users have is because they're mixing Sid or Woody(unstable Debian branches) packages in a Potato(stable Debian, currently) system. This causes numerous problems. A lot of problems are also caused by people side-stepping the package management system. Basically, if 'apt-get' and 'dpkg' don't want to install a package, you shouldn't. Things will break, and break badly. Thank being said, there are some 6000 packages or so for Debian's Sid branch. That's an awful lot of packages :) Most are pretty up-to-date, too, except for a few notable exceptions like Mozilla(which is currently stalled at M18). It's not too often that you'll have to do a manual installation of an app. If the occasion arises, it's not too hard to make your own .deb out of a source tarball, but I'll leave that exercise up to you :) David Barclay Harris, Clan Barclay Aut agere, aut mori. NEWBIE: modules compiling
Hello, I am new to debian. I just installed Potato 2.2r2 with 2.2.18_pre21 kernel on a dell Celerion 3500 laptop. Everything worked fine but i had to recompile the kernel (I took the same kernel source version) to get apm working. I did it on the debian way (make-kpkg...) and found it very usefull and really great. Now I have to recompile the PCMCIA (among others) modules ; I was wondering if there was also a debian way of doing... Thanks for answering... Laurent Vancaillie.

If i were you i'd upgrade to kernel 2.4.x since it has muuuch better laptop support. Compiling the kernel with 'make menuconfig' seems to be the most reliable way to compile any required packages you might need. Give it a go, it' reliable/modern and feature rich. RE: NEWBIE: modules compiling
Hi, to do it not the debian way: make menuconfig make dep make bzImage make modules make modules_install If you have only selected new modules, you possibly can leave out 'make bzImage', but with some kind modules, you need a little kernel support, so it is safe to recompile everything, unless you are hacking a buggy part of the kernel. Re: Lexmark E312
I'd like to add my praise for Lexmark and the printer. I got the E310 a few months ago, and have been quite pleased with it. With the base memory (2Mg, I think) it does postscript printing. It's worked well under windows and Linux. I have had a few anomalies, but the tech support has been pretty responsive. And when some of the problems started getting suspicious (a whine and alignment trouble with envelops) they shipped me a new printer right away. David (and all), Thanks for the reply. The part about mixing hand built stuff with pacages in concerning as I do this quite often. The number of available packages is encouraging but, nonetheless, I know occasions will arise. I've had to build/install by hand X, glibc, postgres, the kernel, gcc, freeamp, and others because of needing bleeding edge versions that fix bugs or because, in debugging the current version, I needed a non-stripped binary. Although the automatic installation abilities of apt sound nice, I find that I usually want to actually download the, in my case, RPM so that I can use it on multiple machines. That is, I question the benefit of this for me. Anyway, I wall continue to explore this and, once again, thanks for the info. --Rainer > -Original Message- > From: David B. specifying depth of 16 & above in xfree86-4
Hi, I have an riva tnt graphics card with a nec multi-sync monitor capable of resolutions of up to 1024x768 @ 87hz interlaced but I can't seem to make XFree work above the color depth of 8??? I'd like to be able to run at least at 16 bpp or possibly 24 but I can't get past 8!!! whenever I try to run at 16 or 24 x-server doesn't start and complains and keeps looking for default depth 8. I can't understand why X loves 8 so much. Am I missing something here? _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
Re: Considering Debian
If the software exists in the Debian repository, you can always do an apt-get source which will dowload the source, to which you can make minor alterations as need be (like including debugging symbols), and then build the package using the existing rules setup by the package maintainer. Just a thought. Sean On Tuesday 27 February 2001 04:32, Rainer Mager wrote: > David (and all), > > Thanks for the reply. TCP failover in software
I am setting up some machines with libnss-ldap to replace /etc/passwd with LDAP access for centralised account administration. I am concerned at what will happen if the LDAP server goes down or experiences a network failure. I have a secondary LDAP configured but I need a way to use it if the primary fails. It seems that libnss-ldap does not support this (I have reported a wishlist bug already). Is there any software in Debian which can do this for me? I imagine that it wouldn't be THAT difficult to write a program to listen on a port and then when a connection comes in it could make a connection to one of two other addresses based on which machine is running reliably. If there is no such software then I'll have to write a program myself. -- http://www.coker.com.au/bonnie++/ Bonnie++ hard drive benchmark http://www.coker.com.au/postal/ Postal SMTP/POP benchmark http://www.coker.com.au/projects.html Projects I am working on http://www.coker.com.au/~russell/ My home page

Re: autofs or automount?
hi ya jonathan... use an automoutner cause... - it automatically mounts the directories/parititions you need - it automatically unmounts it when you no longer need it - minimize corrupting it/erasing it accidentally due to wierd/whacy errors likepower failures, hw resets use autofs if you have simple mountings /home /var/spool/mail use amd( ? ) if you need more interaction with sun, sgi, hp, etc..etc.. - if you need multi-mounts, multi-homed mounts, sub-mounts, and failovers you can explicitly manually mount if you only need it once in a while mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy when automounting stuff or in /etc/fstab and any automount config files - use soft mounts...to prevent your system from hanging while the other machine on the other side of the lan is rebooting - use intr option so that you can controlC out of any hung process - use hard mount for things like /home where you have to wait for the home server to be up and running before you can do anything penalty for using automounters... - you have to wait a few seconds for the resource to be maounted if its not yet available horror stories... - dont use "hard" mounts unless you have to... ( if you dont know why you need hard mountsuse soft mounts intead) - ( personal preferences ) To test the effects of the otehr machine on your own workstation ls -la the /other-server/home/foo/test.c ( assuming it is automounted or hard mounted or manually mounted ) pull the nic wire from the other-server - now site back and wait...till you get pissed have fun alvin http://www.linux-consulting.com/AutoFS/autofs-HOWTO.html On Mon, 26 Feb 2001, Jonathan Matthews wrote: > Thanks to those who responded so . . succinctly to my post about > needing to do on-demand NFS mounting. > > Just a quickie for the list, now: which should I use? > What are the implications of using one over the other? > Is either noticably faster, more robust, or simply better than the > other? > > Equally, has anyone got any horror stories about either . . ?

You will have to update some other packages to the woddy-version if you use the woddy-version of xfree-4.0.2. You will have to install the new dephelpers (from woddy) if you want to compile xfree-4.0.2 yourself from debian-source-package on potato. At least it was this way when I upgraded mz potato to xfree-4.0.2, but this was mor then 4 weeks ago. Problem booting from USB floppy
Hi all, I'm having problems booting from a USB floppy. My BIOS supports USB floppy boot (thinkpad X20), so I can boot a kernel from floppy no problem. Since the USB storage devices work using some sort of SCSI emulation, I have replaced the original kernel image on my boot disk with one that has SCSI support and USB mass storage support built in. In addition, I've used knl to modify the kernel with the following options: knl --kernel=/floppy/linux --prompt --root=/dev/sda In the syslinux.cfg file that accompanies the kernel in my initial debian boot disk, I have the following default: the following: DEFAULT linux APPEND vga=normal noinitrd load_ramdisk=1 prompt_ramdisk=1 ramdisk_size=16384 root=/dev/fd0 disksize=1.44 Since the usb floppy is on /dev/sda, I have added the following lines to the list of boot labels: LABEL usb KERNEL linux APPEND vga=normal noinitrd load_ramdisk=1 prompt_ramdisk=1 ramdisk_size=16384 root=/dev/sda My problems start when I try to load the second root floppy disk into RAM disk. I get the following odd behaviour: (1) If I boot the kernel with the default "linux" label, then as soon as the non-USB floppy driver is loaded into the kernel, then the kernel prompts for the ramdisk. I get the following: VFS: Insert root floppy disk to be loaded into RAM disk and press ENTER. As expected, if I switch the floppy to the root disk and press ENTER, the disk fails to loaded, since the regular floppy driver won't work. Note, after the root disk fails to be detected, more of the kernel loads, and I get get the following kernel messages, which suggest I've biult the kernel OK: scsi1: SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices Vendor: TEAC Model: FD-05PUB Rev: 1026 Type: Direct-AccessANSI SCSI revision: 02 Attached scsi removable disk sda at scsi, channel 0, id 0, lin 0 sda : READ CAPACITY failed. sda : status = 1, message = 00, host = 0, driver = 08 sda : extended sense code = 2 sda : block size assumed to be 512 bytes, disk size 1GB. sda: I/O error: dev 08:00, sector 0 unable to read partition table (2) I've included (1) above since if I now boot the kernel with the "usb" label, which I expected to be OK, then I get no prompt for the root floppy to be loaded into the RAM disk! Instead, I get no prompt to swap disks, I just get VFS: Cannot open root device "sda" or 08:00 Please append a correct "root=" boot option Kernel panic: VFS: Unamble to mount root fs on 08:00 So what am I doing wrong? Why am I getting no prompt so I can take out the boot disk, replace it with the root disk, and type ENTER to continue with the installation? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Edgar.

Upgraded to "testing" + 2.4.2 kernel, and dselect + SOCKS nit working
I've got a big problem, I hope someone can ppoint me in a direction on. I have a machine that lives behinf a corporate firewall. Historicaly, I have been able to get dslect to work using "runsocks dselct". I needed laregfile support on this machien, so yesterday, I canged /etc/apt/sources-list to point at testing, went ito dselect, and did an "install". Then I downloaded the 2.4.2 kernel, built and installed it using kernel-package. Now I have several problems, the bigest one of which is that dslect does not work anymore. Specificaly, I get messages like "Something Wicked happend resolving SITENAME" where SITENAME is for instnace "http.us.debian.or/http". Whats realley strnage is that I can "runsocsk ftp ftp.debian.org" and get a good conection. Could some kind soul sugest where to star, fixing this. X is running and complains that it can't stat a file, so you create a link so that it can stat itself? Perhaps X wants to find its configuration file... --8< XFree86 uses a configuration file called XF86Config for its initial setup. This configuration file is searched for in the following places when the server is started as a normal user: /etc/X11/ /usr/X11R6/etc/X11/ /etc/X11/$XF86CONFIG /usr/X11R6/etc/X11/$XF86CONFIG /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config /etc/XF86Config /usr/X11R6/etc/X11/XF86Config. /usr/X11R6/etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /usr/X11R6/etc/X11/XF86Config /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config. /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config-4 /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config where is a relative path (with no ".." components) specified with the -xf86config command line option, $XF86CONFIG is the relative path (with no ".." components) specified by that environment variable, and is the machines hostname as reported by gethostname(3) . --8< In particular, it's probably worth checking whether XF86CONFIG is getting set somehow. Re: Xfree86 4.0.2 problems when using XF86Setup on testing distribution
Don't use XF86Setup to setup X 4. Use xf86config instead. The graphical tools have never worked very well with X 4. You might want to take a look at http://www.xfree86.org/4.0.2/RELNOTES1.html#1. While they no longer say that the graphical tools won't work you will notice that XF86setup is *not* listed. This is for a reason. As to the other question. I would suggest that you might consider just going to testing. This is what worked best for me. Also keep in mind that if you do go to testing you will most likely have to grabe xserver-xfree86, xbase-clients, xbase-fonts, and the other font packaages by hand. It is kind of a pain but all in all it is worth it as X 4 is much better. Re: NAT/MASQ in single NIC
Hi If you don't have a dial up ppp0, I assume you have things like DSL or cable. And if that is the case, you better off with 2 NICs since the collisions between the network and the internet is so high that it makes it not worth it to have only sigle NIC. KDE packages being held back
Hello, This morning I attempted to apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade. I am told that the new KDE packages are being held back. Does anyone know why they should be held back? So I attempted to upgrade the KDE packages through dselect. The dependencies show that kscd depends on libasound which recommends alsa-base. My sound is working fine so I don't want to install any of the alsa packages. I cannot seem to purge or put on hold the alsa packages. What do I do to get the KDE upgrades? Thanks, Anthony

alien/perl
I was trying to install alien in order to convert some rpm's to deb's, so I downloaded the latest version of alien in deb format. I tried to dpkg --install it, but it balked at my not having the package "perl" installed on my system. I have perl-5.005, perl-5.005-base, perl-5.005-doc, perl-5.005-suid, and perl-base installed. I then went to dselect to try to find a package called "perl", which there is, but it conflicts with perl-5.005-base. A lot of other packages depend on the perl-5.005 packages, so installing the plain 'perl' package would break them. I'm new to debian/linux, so I don't want to mess things up by removing perl-5.005, but I want to get alien installed. Any solutions/suggestions? Also, I tried to dpkg --install perl-5.6.0-20_i386.deb from the unstable section, and again the problem of many of my packages depending on the perl-5.005 packages came up. -JB __ Do You Yahoo!? need some help with ELM
This is actually a touch off-topic, but figured I'd throw it out, anyway. I have a website hosted on a RH box with a shell account. I'm trying to get ELM setup properly to read my mail from the shell. ELM was already installed, but nothing was configured. I am able to access my mail by using the 'elm -f inbox' command, but things are still not configured correctly. New messages are not identified with an 'N' (there's no ID at all), my return address is set to the box hostsname rather than my domain name. Come to think of it, none of the messages are identified at all (r for replied, N for new, etc) except for delete. I have looked around a bit for config information but have found nothing. Can anyone help me configure this properly or point me to documents that would help with this? Thanks.

Re: Root Password problem
reboot the machine. When lilo comes up, tap shift. your prompt should change to LILO boot: type linux init=/bin/sh mount -o remount -o rw /dev/hda1 /(assuming your partition is hda1, of course) passwd change your password now, it'll tell you it was changed successfully. and reboot you'll be all set then =) This is why you never a) let your boss near the machine b) give him the root passwords c) leave a console logged in for him to "play with and learn from" Mike Dresser sysadmin Windsor Machine & Stamping Daniel Ray wrote: > he doesn't know what he did .. the system is on a > video/mouse/keybroard switch box > > see it was my fault leaving the system login as root in the frist place .. > > since i am the only person that knows the system .. Thanks in advance Daniel reboot the thing, when the lilo prompt comes up, start it with init=/bin/sh where image is your kernel image alias as defined in lilo.conf, and as visible when you hit tab at the prompt. this will boot straight into a root shell from which you can change the root password without it being logged even. this is horrible and it basically means that console access to a linux machine means root rights. there are two steps that any system administrator should take IMHO, and these are disabling floppy/cdrom boots as well as setting a password on the bios, and setting lilo's timeout to 0. if this is all taken care off, then you can recover by enabling floppy boot and rescueing that system. an attacker would have to open the box and reset (or crack) the bios. martin [greetings from the heart of the sun]# echo [EMAIL PROTECTED]:1:[EMAIL PROTECTED]@@@.net -- printer not ready. could be a fatal error. have a pen handy?
Re: Root Password problem
1. boot the system with a rescue floppy. 2. mount the root hard drive partition (assuming /etc doesn't have its own partition). 3. edit /etc/shadow so that the first line has no text between the first and second colons. 4. reboot. root now has no password. pete On Tue 27 Feb 01, 1:10 PM, Daniel Ray said: > he doesn't know what he did .. the system is on a > video/mouse/keybroard switch box > > see it was my fault leaving the system login as root in the frist place .. > > since i am the only person that knows the system .. pivot_root: where?
Hi, I am trying to make an initrd (without much succes yet). It is supposed to do the following: - mount an hfs filesystem on /mnt - mount a loopback ext2 filesystem from /mnt/linux.img on /new-root - set /new-root as the new root device - boot from it The doc about initrd in /usr/src/Docs tells me that I have to run pivot_root for the third step and that this command should be in util-linux. I have downloaded it from woody, but the command was not there. Tried several things, but without succes. I think I have to do something with rdev, but the docs are very limited. Can anybody help? Thanks in advance, Sebastiaan

Permissions on the chain of parent directories up to the root? .htaccess files? Access rules in your web server configuration files? Without details the best we can do is guess ... Re: Root Password problem
If you use lilo (or grub) : if you normally boot by typing "linux" type instead "linux init=/bin/bash" (or /bin/sh, /bin/tcsh the shell you use/like) it will do a minimal boot ( you don't have anything ) and a shell root. Now do "passwd" and you should be able to type a new password without supplying the old one Good Luck Romain PS: if for some reason this does not work, I think you can also boot on a floppy (if you can't tweak your lilo), mount your usual root partition and erase the crypted fields of /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow. This means root doesn't have a password anymore... Then reboot (if you booted from a floppy) and change the root passwd immediately."if prompted for the older passwd just press Return" On Tue, 27 Feb 2001, Daniel Ray wrote: > ok .. i am a little new are retriving passwords with debian or anyh flavor of > linux > > > My boss decided to play sysop while i was home sick .. > > so how he changes the root password .. > > I have the machine here ..
