There was a bug in the release 6.2 kernel that showed up on Thunderbirds
and Durons, and it prevented the system from booting after installation.
The basic deal was that the kernel tried to disable the P3 CPUID on the
AMD processors, which resulted in a general protection fault. You can get
around it by booting with this from the LILO boot: prompt:
linux x86_serial_nr=1
which tells the kernel not to disable the CPUID. The problem was fixed in
Red Hat's 2.2.16-3 kernel (at least) and in the 2.2.16 kernel in general
across all distributions. This problem and the workaround are detailed in
our knowledge base.
Past that, what Trond said is exactly right -- for SMP and laptops, no
real choice. For the desktop, use whatever suits your budget and taste.
