Well, I presumed that file and print sharing would have had to be
manually specified.  Since this is the first time the 'Coni'
Win98 machine was connecting to the rest of world I felt chances
were good that file and print sharing services would not be
enabled. But, it's good to bring this up, before it's too late.

I think I did have file sharing off, not sure about the printer
  (the printer isnt configured yet)
But my question is:
since this windows machine is connected to a linux gw with firewall
is it really important to "disable file and printer sharing"?
I had thought that with the firewall on the gw machine,
I had at least some level of protection
