John, it seems to have worked! with some quirks:
I didnt quite follow what you said I was too big a chicken
to try to get rid of all of 4 adapter lines at once
so I went piecemeal and when got down to just one, it seemed ~ ok
So I never did the 'refresh'.
got some goofy intermediate results on 'route print'
and not sure everything still quite correct,
'winipcfg' still just shows the pppadapter
and some oddball 224.0.0.0 showing up
see the 'route print' below
but I can ping 192.168.2.7 and 192.168.2.1
and on the net right now to hotmail composing this message
after removing all but one Intel adapter and its binding
still just get the pppadapter from winipcfg
but now the route print is much better 192.168.2.1 and .7 showup
no more 169.....
but still 224.0.0.0 what is this???
netwkaddr netmask gw addr interface
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.2.1 192.168.2.7
127.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1
192.168.2.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.2.7 192.168.2.7

maybe I am there, not sure above route table is fully ok
and dont know what 224.0.0.0 is
and dont understand the winipcfg still showing pppadapter

I may have to turn to to this list again
if I have trouble on routes etc when trying w98 within vmware
--that task may take a few days or weeks before i have time to try it.
The concern I have is that the remove of the Ipadapter lines
said that would remove it from all hardware profiles,
so somechance maybe itdid something i dont want in the others
but that is just speculation, it was certainly wrong the way it was
in this native w98 hardware profile.
