John, thanks much for help
i obviously have much screwed up, not set:
the 'winipcfg' cmd only comes up with PPPadapter
which i am not trying to use,
so clearly i need something like the w98 equiv of ifcfg-eth0
winipcfg:
hostname corni.pacbell.net
dns 206.13.28.12
node type broadcast
..dns checked
Ethernet Adapterinfo:
PPP adapter only one listed ???

the 'route print' cmd
likewise doesnt show anything re my ip addr or gateway
netw addr netmask gatewayaddr If metric
127.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1 1
255.255.255.255 255.255.255.255 255.255.255.255 0.0.0.0 1
so now what?
it tried to set use control panel -network to setup networking
but whatever i did obviously wasnt enough or is getting sidetracked.
What this shows me is a big help but i dont know where to go next
