Ok, if you already have PAP set up, what you need to do is to edit your
PPP chat script or /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/chat-ppp0 and remove
everything after 'CONNECT' '' so that you skip the username/password
dialog, and go right into the PPP handshake.  What I think is happening
is that the terminal server that the new number is connected to is only
set up to connect using PAP.  The setup when you give username and
password is broken.  This doesn't bother Windows machines that are set
up to only use PAP/CHAP by default, but it will bother anyone that has a
chat script set up.
