Ok, the 40MB (never mind 40mB ;-) [0] ) will most definitely be too
small. I was using a 386/33 with 16MB under RHL 5.2 as a firewall until
recently, but I was only able to squeeze it down into ~150MB - and
that's without development libraries, without X and all related packages
and other fluff.
If your friend can get a bigger HD (I'd say something around 400-500MB
should be ideal), he does indeed stand a chance of running RHL 5.2
(haven't tried 6.x on such a machine) on that box. However, he shouldn't
expect X to be very fast, that's for sure. I once had a 386/40 running
under X and it was painful, however, my box had only 8MB and was
swapping constantly, so your friend has a better chance.
As for "no CD": Four possibilities come to mind:
1) If that box has a network card: Do network install
2) If you can get a big enough HD, copy the RH CD onto it on another
machine and do a HD install - or borrow a second, big enough HD for
that purpose.
3) Borrow a CD-ROM
4) Take the HD out of the 386 into a machine with a CD-ROM, do the
install there and put it back. Caveat: You might run into a few
obstacles, as the hardware recognition mightn't be correct.
