Another option for your friend, particularly if the 386 doesn't have a
CD-ROM, is to download the diskette images for Debian and do the base
install. It creates a basic command-line Linux that can be useful for
study purposes. If he has a NIC in the machine and can tap the Internet,
he can add a few bits to it, as space permits.
