Well, i figured what happened. He had changed permissions on several files
in /bin. 
The " su: cannot set groups: Operation not permitted " was the giveaway
(after I thought it about it). This is just another way of telling me that
no one but root had permission to su, so I checked permissions on the
binary and, sure enough, it was wrong. So I fixed it ( rwsr-xr-x) and all
is lovely again. I forgot about the s permission the first time through
