OK! Got it working.
Peter, hope this message finds you clear of the problems that plagued
the both of us last week, in case it didn't, here's what's up.
Your ez-bios software may differ from the ez-drive utility that I am
using... with that
in mind.
1. I decreased the size of the root partition. I had been trying to get
away with
one root large partition about 2.8GB and a swap partition. My working
install
of RHL has a 500MB partition for root, 127MB for swap, and the balance
divided
between /usr and /home. All my other installs have smaller root partitions
as well, but
none of which go beyond cylinder 1024... go figure...
2. Do not install LILO in the MBR, but instead on the boot sector of the
root partition.
Which only makes sense since your ez-bios is in the MBR. LILO will pause at
during
boot up but will continue to load Linux unless you have a bootable dos
partition and
you have things set up differently.
I got tired of failed 5.0 attempts and went back to what I had experienced
success with.
Once I implemented both of these items I was able to get v4.2 to install and
reboot.
Perhaps the smaller root partition would have helped with 5.0. In the last
attempt at installing
5.0 I had still the large root partition, but I did have LILO on the boot
sector of the root
partition. When I restarted I got "invalid OS hit <return> to reboot", just
like all the other
attempts.
Now, I have upgraded the machine to 5.0, it's working just as sweet as all
my other little
re-furbished 486/50s Linux servers. Hope this helps! Feel free to write
back if it doesn't!
Bethg:-)
