*FIRST* I had to remember that the [return] key is not the same as the
[enter] key, but it doesn't work.

If you press the [return] key at the wrong point it just locks up. Won't
even give you the spinning pizza; just stops responding to any input
(even the mouse pointer won't move). Have to power cycle it to recover.

If I could remember the original password (or if I had written it down
until I had it memorized) I wouldn't be in this mess.

But, yeah, it appears the keychain password is set to the original
password that I can't remember.

I've made note of Godfrey's suggestion to use my current User ID to
create another User ID that also has Administrator privileges & then
login with the new User ID to delete the original User ID, but I'm going
to hold off doing that because I'm worried I'll screw it up somehow &
make the problem worse.

There are a bunch of Mac users at my local photography brunch & their
near unanimous consensus was make an appointment with the genius bar at
the Apple Store over in Durham. I'll look into doing that as soon as I
get back from my piano lesson.

Have you tried just hitting Enter? If you don’t recall setting a
Keychain password, maybe you didn’t set a keychain password. Which
may mean that the Password is an empty field. My Keychain password is
the same as my LogIn password. I don’t know if I set it up that way
in a weak moment when I was not taking account the chance that
someone would break into the house and try to use my programs. Or if
there was a default linkage between the two along the way. But your
Keychain could also be the same as your forgotten LogIn password.

I've been so busy I haven't had time to do anything with the Mac
mini I acquired recently. And because I didn't write it down, I
forgot the [BLEEPIN'] password.

I was able to to reset the password using my Apple ID (which I did
have written down & fortunately the paper was still in the box
waiting to be shredded).

But *NOW* every time I try to login I get a prompt:

Mac OS X wants to use the "Local Items" Keychain. Please enter the
keychain password.

Nothing I've tried works & I don't even remember setting a
keychain password. It's not my Apple ID or my Apple ID password.

I'm able to cancel & it logs me in, but it's REALLY annoying.

I haven't yet installed any software other than the free upgrade to
OS X Mavericks.

This wouldn't be a problem with Windoze, because at this point I'd
just run FDISK & blow the whole thing away & reinstall from
scratch. Is that possible with the Mac?

I did make that 8GB bootable USB stick when I was upgrading to OS
X Mavericks.
