Nokia are a very conservative company but, with Maemo 5, enabled Maemo
Extras - run by the community - out of the box on the N900; and,
following various discussions, the consensus was that there would be
no obvious reason to not do so in future devices as it had been an
enormous success. Yes, there were one or two apps which got through
the QA process with problems (either technical or perceived legal by a
third party); but these were dealt with and rectified.

If Nokia can be convinced about the value of enabling a repository out
of the box, any vendor should be able to be convinced!

Anyway, we seem to be going round the houses. Can't the problem be
simplified to:

  * A MeeGo-compliant package MUST depend on other MeeGo-compliant packages
or the packages in MeeGo Core.
  * A MeeGo-compliant package with dependencies on other MeeGo-compliant
packages MUST be delivered through a mechanism (such as a repository)
which can deliver the other dependencies.

For example, a MeeGo-compliant package in Ovi Store could depend on
MeeGo Core packages and a MeeGo-compliant package in MeeGo Extras. It
is then a Nokia issue to ensure that all devices with access to Ovi
Store also have access to MeeGo Extras; but this is not any additional
burden on the MeeGo project, or any other vendor. Similarly, it's then
a policy issue for Nokia & Ovi Store to decide whether or not to allow
non-compliant packages into their store; but again, this doesn't
impact us on meego.com.

Cheers,

Andrew
