IMO there's too much mixup between dependencies and artifacts. We should work
more towards
https://maven.apache.org/shared/maven-artifact-transfer/comparison.html
That said: artifacts have an extension, not a type (that's for dependencies).
In the end this PR has will still give you the same result.
