It should just have built a new database from scratch.

Still hard to get a handle on this. Have you tried with checksum=0? That
should disable all the checksum code. If that works then at least I know
where to start looking. :)

Alternatively, try 1.6.1 which has just been uploaded and includes a
timeout for connecting to the checksum database.

Another thing to try (just because I have made changes to this area in
1.6.?) is unsetting daemon_addr. Setting it to 0.0.0.0 is unecessary.

I'll think some more. It is strange as I can run here with your config!
