Thanks for your reply.

I was on the latest one from a standard update, which was the one that
broke everything, which was 6.14 etc. It was the July 17th update, I
believe. I've recently switched to 6.15.7-061507-generic hoping it would
fix it, from the appropriate console command. There's a a bunch I used
before then, but think it was called the Ubuntu mainline script.
