It seems that the virtual workspace size is not saved. Everytime I log
in my virtual desktop size is the default: 2 columns and 1 row. There's
no difference whether I set it using the Workspace Switcher or
CompizConfig Settings Manager.

This still happens at least on 11.04. It worked before, but suddenly I
cannot connect anymore. However, I'm able to connect from command line
manually using vpnc-connect and /usr/share/vpnc/pcf2vpnc like mentioned
in comment #5 (thanks for the tip!).

I think this is pretty bad. I verified that the bug cannot be reproduced
under Unity 2D, so it must be a bug in Unity. The Unity implementation
in 11.10 seems to have a lot of regression and it's nearly unusable on
my laptop.

Switching off the compiz animations trashed the top panel completely and

I can reproduce a complete freeze like this:
1) Have an SDHC memory card attached to an external USB card reader (I have the
card reader also connected to a hub).
2) Click and start playing a MOV-video (size of my video is around 300 MB) from
the card using the default movi
Now I realized, that it's not the desktop that freezes. It's related to
USB. All my USB devices gets dropped when reproducing this. That's why
the desktop seemed to be frozen. Things are working again if I reconnect
my USB devices.
