I got the media keys working on amarok also, but not exactly by the same
way.
I deleted every shortcut from kcontrol, but that didn't help. Then I
deleted every media key from Gnome Shortcuts Applet. After that the
"Next" and "Prev" keys started working, but not the "Play/Pause". I then

I installed kubuntu-desktop and checked it out. The problem remains the
same.
But some more testing:
I cleared my playlist (which previously had all my music files listed),
and the problem went away. Amarok starts almost instantaneously. I don't
know why I didn't try that before.

I just added cpufreq-applet to my gnome-panel and it did not show up at all.
Then I pressed mouse right button on panel and noticed that I accidentally
pressed the button on cpufreq-applet that was not visible. So I moved my
gnome-panel to the top of my screen and all the applets were updated, e
closed.

Actually, there seems to be also a limitation in functionality: I don't
seem to be able to switch off bluetooth by software (i.e. from gnome-
bluetooth). Maybe because gnome-bluetooth thinks that it is already off
due to the dell-bluetooth device being shown as off regardless of the
hardware switch
