Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

The volume to the headphone output of my Dell Latitude D630 is
"calibrated" badly (for the lack of a better word).

This means:
At low volume settings (either master volume or per-application) the sound gets
turned off even if the slider is not at the lowest setting (see screenshot),
*and* at the point of clipping I'd describe the volume as "slightly below
average", i.e. there would be plenty of room left to decrease the volume
without clipping it to 0.

At high volume settings on the other hand, at about 75% of the slider,
the sound is so loud that it hurts the ears and gets distorted.
