I can confirm this behavior after an upgrade from Kubuntu 8.04 to 8.10.
kdm.log said "(EE) config/hal: couldn't initialise context: (null) ((null))"
which lead me to the conclusion that kdm started before hal. Indeed, in
/etc/rc2.d, scripts are S20kdm and S24hal.
So i moved S20kdm to S25kdm, an

Ivrs_ioapic isn't working with amd-svm and iommu disabled in bios. IMHO
this parameters are not the fix, just a partial workaround.
My last parameters are working with any bios settings and any distro.

I successfully installed the second Precise test kernel from Joseph on a Ubuntu
Precise 12.04.02 and the vm boots fine.
I should mention that the default kernel is 3.5.0-23-generic. The difference
between kernels are pretty high.
My question is: shouldn't we do rebase to 3.5 version?

Hello from 2015! Since this bug is still open I thought it might help if
I post how I resolved the error on my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS headless server:
apt-get install python-gobject policykit-1
Edit XML configuration file
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/com.ubuntu.ComputerJanitor.conf
and add following line as

headless server no GTK no X.
Had to manually install python-gobject package.

I have just recently upgraded from 14.04 to 14.10 Ubuntu. I had this
problem too, for an entire week now. couldn't edit users, network,
suspend, shutdown, etc. tried every single solution to no avail. In the

I can't update anything.

I have mistaken, it's not cron 3.1.11-1ubuntu5.1, it's "at
3.1.11-1ubuntu5.1". And I didn't resolved my bug.

The problem seems to be that the package was removed from the repository, but
my local index still pointed to the old version.
A simple "apt-get update" fixed the install problem.
