I installed Breezy on another partition. Breezy didn't has this problem
so firefox that came by default with Breezy installation CD worked fine
with Urdu fonts. but Epiphany which I downloaded and installed showed
the same symptoms that we are seeing in Dapper.

Font rendering problem in Gecko
It seems that In Ubuntu Firefox Pango support is enabled for selective
locales only. Adding the line:
MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=0
in /etc/environment
has resolved the problem for me and now I can see the Web pages in Urdu
displayed with perfect font rendering.
But this isn't the solution to the problem
It seems that the fix released is actually stopping web pages in Urdu
Fonts to display correctly in Firefox, Epiphany, Mozilla Thunderbird.
However it does not effects Galeon.
When I tried Firefox after adding:
MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=0 in /etc/environment
It started rendering Urdu web pages perfectly
Actually what firefox does is that it displays the page with out Pango
most urdu pages remain readable but firefox uses someother font like
Tahoma (if installed) and it even renders Tahoma badly for urdu.
I don't quite understand how this patch works. I assume that by
Installing Urdu language pack
Applying the above solution to firefox creates major performance issues:
1. Firefox becomes slower, consuming 100% cpu at times and crashes quite
often.
2. Galeon starts rendering Urdu pages incorrectly after applying the
above solution.
Our problem seems related to the patch applied for the bug
Matt actually our problem is directly related to the patch applied here.
If we enable Pango by adding:
MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=0
We would be able to render Urdu Pages but our Firefox would be a lot
more slower and consuming 100% cpu resources at times. I have noticed
that with Pango enabled firefox cra
I agree that there must be some decent fonts available in Ubuntu out of
the box but I dont think that ttf-pakType are any decent fonts to view
Urdu webpages. They are not fully compatible with standards and doesn't
contain several characters for Urdu. Instead, I would strongly recommend

Further investigation in this matter reveals that This problem occurs in

This problem doesn't occur in Galeon which is another Gecko based

I will try to report this to upstream, meanwhile I would like to add my
recent investigation.
I noticed that the problem occurs in these two conditions:
1. When I have synaptic running and I open google webpage to search for
something. Sometimes it freezes when I am writing text in search box and
I had problems with Urdu font rendering. We used to set pango enabled
in /etc/environment to get it work but with gutsy when we didnt need
to do that.

In Dapper we needed to add this line to enable pango so that Firefox
renders Urdu web pages properly:
MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=0
The situation is same in Feisty so what we need to do is that this line
automatically gets inserted when someon
I installed Ubuntu Feisty and we still need to add
MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=0
in /etc/environment
in order to properly view Urdu pages. I don't think it is a bug, because
it is a decission made by the Ubuntu developers to disable pango in
Firefox shipped with Ubuntu. I installed Debian Etch and using i
