I've never seen a videoadaptor section in my life, however I was aware
of its existence in the man file. It's quite funny.
As regards your problem I can only suggest you to ask NVIDIA since this might
be related to their driver. You can start a new thread here:

Ok, follow these steps:
Use the old xorg.conf and reboot. Let it crash.
Then boot in recovery mode and put the working xorg.conf back.
Boot again into Ubuntu with the working xorg.conf and attach these files:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old

Try disabling the Composite extension by adding the following section to
your xorg.conf:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Disable"

You can try 2 things:
1) type:
mv .kde .kdebackup
and try to enter KDE 4 again.
2) If point 1 doesn't solve the problem, make sure that all the required
packages are installed.
sudo apt-get install --reinstall kubuntu-desktop
Let me know how it goes.

The fact that gnome-panel disappears is something I can't reproduce and
maybe is some residue of #255461. Maybe removing some Gnome hidden
directory/files can help.

I had the same problem with the ati driver. I'm assigning the bug report
