Darren,
Thanks for the tip. I have a T61, nVidia Corporation Quadro NVS 140M
(rev a1) and Hardy Heron. I used these guides to update the NVidia
drivers:

And I did notice a bit of a differen
Intrepid installs 177.80 but be aware there are compatibility issues
with older cards (i.e. this driver only supports a limited set of more
recent nvidia hardware). The command "aptitude show nvidia-glx-177"
will give you the supported list.

I used envyng to get version 173.14.12
What version does Intrepid install? I wonder if envyng can be used for
this or perhaps even a manual install??

this issue disappeared for me when I upgraded to Intrepid. My guess,
given all the info available, is that the nvidia driver is the culprit.
Intrepid has a later version (unless it has since been backported to
Hardy, but I don't think it has).

So I'm guessing that the 'fix released' is to turn off compiz? That

I'm curious to know if the issue lies in the video drivers or compiz?
Where can we get a good status update on new code for either or both

Actually, I upgraded to intrepid and I installed the latest nvidia drivers. I

I am not sure which sites trigger it though.

Hey, the System Monitor apparently triggers this bug because whenever I
open it up, Xorg spikes to 75% usage. But closing it lowering the using
down to the normal 1-2%. Hope it helps. And yes, this bug is annoying.

Hi hyperair,
Thanks for including an image to demonstrate the issue. Could you also please
attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file
from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your

I have the same problems when CPU usage is always 85-95% when nothing is
running. Except the gnome-system-monitor. So I found out that it was
gnome-system-monitor that caused such high CPU usage in Xorg. I used the

I don't doubt that compiz severely impacts this performance issue, but
turning off various screenlets (or all), freed my T61 cpu back to ~25%
or so at powersave cpu mode, much smoother cube animations now.

Hey all!
I've browsed through the NVIDIA Linux forums, namely this thread:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=114858
and have come to some reasonable conclusions based on what I found there.
1. Firefox uses XRender to display pages now
2. NVIDIA cards are slow with xrender: http://
Sorry my problem was compiz related, I joust turn it off and everything
works fine. Sorry for taking your time.
