I'm now on Natty and the problem continues...
Instead of shutting down and rebooting, I shut the laptop lid to put it to
sleep (suspend to RAM), plug in the mic and open the lid - that works, and is a
lot faster than a full reboot.

An update: my current workaround is to put the laptop to sleep by
closing the lid, plugging in the external mic and then waking up the
machine again. It works! Not the best way out perhaps, but better than
having to boot every time...

Interestingly enough, recording now works for me, with "HDA Intel (Alsa mixer)"
selected in the Volume Control properties. This is after regular system updates
up until yesterday.
Volume is a little low, but audible. However, the red crosses on the mic icons
