Thanks, I wasn't sure its the installer because the install itself goes
through without trouble, kernel boot messages appear, fsck and fs mount
seem to happen.

Anyway, I didn't mention it but I did try the recovery mode - that's
where i get to see the boot time messages.

Alt+1 screen stops after "Begin: Running /scripts/init-bottom ... done.".
Alt+7 screen stops after fsck. There are no other messages. 

Disk activity is on for quite a few seconds after these messages,
holding out the hope that something will follow. I've left the system in
this state for over 5 mins but it does seem to be stuck.
