I finally did a fresh install of 10.10 and dist-upgraded to 11.04 - that worked just fine.
As an aside, the nouveau driver (and the experimental 3D support) work great! I was so thrilled to see just about everything work - compiz effects, smooth switching between text tty and X, suspend/resume... Great job, guys!!
