To answer part of your question, I use putty to SSH into my server; then use
'ps aux' to see what apps are running.

If they are represented on the scsi bus properly (no ID conflicts,
etc) then they are visible to the OS already

fsck /
or
fsck -A
to check all your devices...
This error occurred because you haven`t turned off the system properly or
because your hard disk is not 100% perfect.
This command also will ask if you want to correct some i-nodes. I suggest
your answer yes
