That would be okay, but I don't know how to do it.
Any help, pointers to documentation, etc., would be much appreciated.

For a general introduction to Linux, _Running Linux_ 3rd ed by Welsh,

I've also found _Linux in a Nutshell_ to be very useful. A good Samba

FYI.
I was doing several menu updates at the same time. I think the source
of the coolicon thing was an editor called Cooledit that was installed
at the same time I was doing Amaya. The panel crash had nothing to do
with it.
Had I run locate *cool*, I would have found everything I needed.

Oddly enough, this question led to the solution. The temptation was to
reply "whatever ships with RH 6.1" but this seemed . . . unhelpful.
Anyway, Patrick's question got me looking around in the /etc/X11

Yep. Same problem here. Worked fine under 6.0, can't find anything on
the parallel port on 6.1.
And I'm glad to hear RH is aware of the problem.
Am having similar problems with sound card (Creative AWE64 16 bit audio
SB16) which was happily recognized by sndconfig under 6.0 and seems to
