Well, sendmail flipped out last night -- right after midnight . . . eh?
-- but my helpful linux guru happened to be over for a glass o' bubbly,
so he reinstalled sendmail.

I'm now getting the following warning showing up in my logs:

Jan  1 11:01:00 maxx sendmail[1002]: /etc/sendmail.cf: WARNING:
dangerous write permissions

Sendmail works fine.  I know nothing about sendmail and am a little lost
as to where to begin researching this.  A quick look at the Sendmail web
site manual and FAQ didn't find anything (I plan to go back more
carefully).  Suggestions as to where to find the meaning of this warning
or what permissions I should look at?
