Oddly enough, this question led to the solution. The temptation was to
reply "whatever ships with RH 6.1" but this seemed . . . unhelpful.
Anyway, Patrick's question got me looking around in the /etc/X11
directory to try and figure out what version of E I am running (there
has to be an easier way).
I ran across reference to coolicon in /etc/x11/xinit/xinitrc. After
making a backup of xinitrc, I edited xinitrc to comment out the
references to coolicon. This worked quite nicely. Apparently, the
appearance of coolicon was triggered by
if coolicon --version >/dev/null 2>&1 ; then
somehow I'd met that condition, whatever it is.
However, I apparently made this harder than it needed to be. If I'd
looked more carefully I would have discovered the file
xinitrc.pre-coolicon (which is evidently xinitrc before I inadvertantly
activated coolicon) and could have just renamed it.
Of course, I still don't know what version of E I'm running . . . .
Thanks.
