Well, GNU-grub is trying to be os agnostic. It doesn't depend on any
libraries AFAIK, so it should work on any version of linux. I've dl it and
am trying to get the half-hour of time to configure it and try it. Looks
very nice.

controller and it comes up on the sdc interface (sda & sdb are hard disks).

I've done the same and had no problem--even as root. BTW, you don't have
to re-boot to see if everything is OK. I consider that a Windows thing
which linux doesn't need. The most you may need to do is unmount a
partition and fsck it after you are done deleting things.

Well, I'm assuming that the same machine is working under some other
os. Check on how ttyS0 is set up in your system. Sounds like it is
configured as the loopback device in error.
