Just in case anyone else is having the additional problems that I had,
where apt update wanted to reinstall the unmodified after I applied the
workaround above: I needed to do the following in addition:
dpkg --configure -a
lient and server happening in sync.

The pause occurs in game.c line 1171. If got there by the SDL_ACTIVEEVENT with
state 2 (SDL_APPINPUTFOCUS) and gain 0.

Yep, applying this commit solves the issue.
Previously 'gamma' from math.h was masked in order to make it available
to be defined by cubescript, and this masking was dependent on
implementation-specifics which had changed.
With this fix cubescript uses a different associated global name
'reqgamma' and thus does not need the masking.

I think I can confirm this behaviour on my system. However, pidgin
sometimes even freezes right during or after startup.
Running pidgin in strace sometimes solves the problem. This makes me
assume that this is a timing related problem, because strace should not
modify the state of pidgin, but migh

the same test that fails:
