I think I can confirm this behaviour on my system. However, pidgin sometimes even freezes right during or after startup.
Running pidgin in strace sometimes solves the problem. This makes me assume that this is a timing related problem, because strace should not modify the state of pidgin, but might change the timing behaviour of some code.
