the correct approach is to simply drop the -usplash package.
It would be nice to get a replacement up and running, but at the

Sep 1.
Normally I would suggest uploading it in unstable and asking for an
unblock.
But I think a program like encfs needs more testing. In particular 1.7.2
was released on Sep 5 (and is not yet in experimental).

do not understand the problem and the reporter have failed to provide
more information to explain it better, perhaps it is best to reduce
the severity or close the bug as wontfix?

I had the same problem too, but not only with iceweasel.
With iceweasel 3.5.8 the boxes where black, with version
3.5.12 I had grey boxes, then also galeon and revelation
were showing grey boxes.
After some investigations I found that it must have
something to do with the fglrx drivers.
