The apt xapian index is generated in the background upon first
installation of apt-xapian-index. This takes some minutes.
If you start packagesearch very soon after installation (before the
first update is finished), you get a warning and packagesearch should

My system do not have a /dev/cdrom any more (udev-based system) and I
guess many other users will be in the same situation. So this bug
probably renders the package unusable for most users.
IMO the package could well be removed from Debian, there are working
alternativ

After a recent upgrade of my whole system, I'm encountering the same

I have the same problem for some applications (e.g. packagesearch or
assistant from qt4-dev-tools), though it is not a black square being
shown, but the black silhouette of every non-transparant region.
However, it is probably the same bug.
Packagesearch uses the QPixmap class from QT to load the

As part of my NM process I have prepared a patch for this bug.
I tracked it down to a single buggy line. The sign of a value was wrong,
leading to an invalid (negative) array index and thus to a segfault.
