Let me clarify a couple of things:
1. The problem is sporadic in that the kernel and
system will boot on occasion, usually after the system
has been powered down for awhile (i.e. overnight).
After working on the 2.6.21 kernel for some time, if a

In my logs I noticed:
identd[8496]: s_open("/var/run/identd.pid", O_WRONLY): Permission denied
Which can be explained as it runs as identd and not as root.
Because of this, there is a special directory in /var/run:
