I found out some more about this problem and have worked around it as
a result. It seems related to gsfonts-x11, which seems to have some
reports about similar problems. The problem I had with xfig not
finding fonts goes away if I delete the alias lines in
/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1/fonts.alias

The default value of the unicode trackbar string was supposed to be a
full line, however, I must admit I never tested this myself before
releasing trackbar.
I release a new upstream version of trackbar that will use a reasonable
default for this variable, and that will include a fix for bug 3669
