[Bug 305544] Re: 8.10 non-lan wired network speed slow

2008-12-05 Thread Sean
** Description changed:

  Hi,

  Architecture: amd64
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.10

I've installed two new Dell entry level servers in two separate sites, and
local LAN speed is fine.
As soon I go to the Internet (e.g. apt-get update, or http download), the
speed is disasterously slow (abandoned apt-get update after 24 hours!).
Other machines (e.g. running 7.10) on the same segment, there is no problem.

Checked, proxies (none) netmask, routing, tracroutes are fine.
SSH transfers are mostly fine, but sometimes stall in one direction.
ifconfig shows no errors. Speed is 100 FDX on the card.

I suspected a LAN card issues (hw or driver):
  Nov 27 10:10:17 server3 kernel: [2.555704] eth0: Tigon3 [partno(BCM95722)
rev a200 PHY(5722/5756)] (PCI Express) 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet

  Nov 27 10:10:17 server3 kernel: [2.555708] eth0: dma_rwctrl[7618]
dma_mask[64-bit]

iperf tests on the LAN show 10MB locally, and also 40KB via DSL (fine).
Why does it seem to be limited to http?

But after buying and testing another LAN card (Linksys), the same behaviour.
Which leads me to believe I've stumbled across a Ubuntu bug, but in what
package? I'm confused..
  See attached infos.

Updated to the latest:

~$ uname -a

Using ALSA for sound.

Un-muted PCM and turned it up.

Sound works.

[Bug 223912] Re: Nautilus freezes when opening some directories

2008-12-01 Thread Sean
After upgrading to intrepid, I'm no longer seeing this issue. It seems
this was a hardy-only bug.

The method for triggering the bug is dependent on the images. Some
images take under a second to scale, some take closer to a minute.

Basically:
create a directory
create a bunch of subdirectories
put a bunch of images in all of those subdirectories (this step might be
optional)
set the custom icon for each subdirectory as one of the images in that directory
navigate into one of the subdirectories
navigate back up to the parent directory (this is the step that causes the hang)

I think Laurent also described it fairly well.

[Bug 322706] [NEW] Gedit freezes if working directory has too many files

2009-01-29 Thread Sean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

I am using gedit to write / debug a numerical code in C on Ubuntu 8.04.
The code generates a lot of data in a large number of output files.

In a recent run, 9000 files were generated in the "output" directory. If
I set "output" as the working directory in Gedit, it freezes (the screen
greys out and one of my processors hits 100%).

I am using the "file browser pane" plugin. I think this may be causing
the problem by loading a list of files in the directory. The problem
persists even with the browser sidepane closed. Is there any way to make
the browser plugin more efficient? Nautilus seems to handle the task
much more efficiently.

[Bug 345627] Re: Crackling / scratching noise using Pulseaudio

2009-05-29 Thread Sean
Not sure if this is the same problem, but I'm having audio playback
problems on my ForteMedia FM801-AU - sound in all applications suffers
from occasional "hiccups". However, the most severe problem is that
flash video seems to get stuck in "fast forward" after some time
(playback of both audio and video is very fast and extremely choppy).
Updating linux-image-generic to 2.6.28.12.16 in jaunty-proposed made the
problem less severe (the system played a number of flash videos
flawlessly, but then eventually suffered from the same fast-forward
problem). Is this the same problem? Were there other packages that
needed to be updated (other than linux-image) to fix the problem?

[Bug 223912] Re: Nautilus freezes when opening some directories

2008-09-18 Thread Sean
The hangs are typically 4 - 5 minutes. and it only happens in my
pictures directory. I have a directory with about 40 subdirectories with
pictures. opening the top pictures directory is quick, but opening any
subdirectory takes forever. if I create a new subdirectory and put a
picture in it (either from elsewhere that loads quickly or one of the
freezing picture subdirectories) it freezes. if I take any of the
pictures from one of the pictures subdirectories and put it in a
different directory outside of my pictures, it loads quickly. I hope
that helps to explain the problem.

[Bug 223912] Re: Nautilus freezes when opening some directories

2008-09-18 Thread Sean
I assume that wouldn't cause a hang. It doesn't appear to be anything
with one of the pictures. Copying my pictures directory to a new
directory alleviates the problem. Another point of interest is that I
have a custom icon for each folder that is a picture container within.

Let me try to list the known conditions:
- Happens when opening any subdirectory of $HOME/My Pictures
- Only happens if that subdirectory contains a picture
- The picture doesn't matter. Pictures that don't cause problems in other
places cause problems in $HOME/My Pictures
- $HOME/My Pictures contains 56 subdirectories, each of them with a custom icon
that is a picture from that subdirectory.
- $HOME/My Pictures does not freeze while loading.
- $HOME/My Pictures is world readable/writeable as are most of the
subdirectories (were copied over from a windows partition)
- If I copy $HOME/My Pictures to $HOME/pictures, the problem (and custom icons)
don't transfer over to $HOME/pictures.

If you look at the strace there appears to be a couple of files that appear
unrelated but moving them out of the way didn't seem to help.
[pid 20274] 22:42:42.034784 open("/home/nicolle/My
Pictures/2008.7/CIMG1528.JPG", O_RDONLY|O_LARGEFILE) = 22
..
[pid 20274] 22:42:42.469348 mmap2(NULL, 26546176, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE,
MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0xb1b1e000
[pid 20274] 22:43:53.849976 munmap(0xb1b1e000, 26546176) = 0

That picture is the icon for one of the subdirectories. Actually, all of
the files in the strace are. Perhaps when I open a subdirectory all of
the icons for $HOME/My Pictures are scaled? I'm grasping at straws. If
you have any more ways I can analyze this, please let me know. Thanks
for your patience.

[Bug 223912] Re: Nautilus freezes when opening some directories

2008-09-18 Thread Sean
I did a bit more debugging. I don't really get the code. From what I can
understand: when I open up My Pictures, it finds the cached versions of
the icons for all of the subdirectories. When I open up a subdirectory
something causes it to check the icons for all of the subdirectories.
For some reason it doesn't find them at this point. This happens in a
thread that blocks interaction with the GUI. They're all custom icons,
and some of them take 30 seconds to a minute to generate the thumbnails
(I just stepped through and verified that's what's happening). That
seems a bit extreme. Anyway, after that, that nautilus window will load
any of the subdirectories again without problem, until it's closed. Once
it's closed and reopened, back to not working. The backtrace helps to
explain what's going on probably better than I did. Thanks.

And the bug doesn't happen in $HOME. I don't understand the code well
enough to figure out why the icons are being scaled ... it's making 16
pixel icons for something. From the parent directory of the directory I
changed to (or the directory I'm changing away from, same thing). I
don't see those icons anywhere. Also, it doesn't happen if I run
"nautilus My Pictures/2001 Pawnee", while it would happen if I navigated
to that directory. It seems that the generating of thumbnails is an
unintended side-effect of something.

[Bug 259058] [NEW] after using "toggle_plplot_use", octave fails to plat anything.

2008-08-18 Thread Sean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: octave-plplot

I am running Ubuntu 8.04, octave 3.0 and I installed octave-plplot using
Synaptic Package Manager.
gnuplot works fine as the default plotting tool.

At the octave command line I typed the command "toggle_plplot_use" to enable
plplot as the plotting package.
Some warnings were issued relating to the built-in variable LOADPATH, but
plplot was enabled.

Now the command "plot(1:10)" should plot a straight line. No plot is
displayed. The following errors are shown:

error: liblapack.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
error: `plplot_octave' undefined near line 3163 column 1

2008-08-18 Thread Sean
Yes, this is exactly the output I see when running toggle_plplot_use.m.

I went through the plplot.m file and removed all of the code blocks relating
to LOADPATH. These blocks occurred in the form of

if (built-in LOADPATH exists)

2008-08-18 Thread Sean
Apologies for the previous message cut short...

After I removed the code blocks referring to LOADPATH in
toggle_plplot_use.m, the warnings obviously stopped, but the plotting errors
were identical.

I am using 8.12 and I went to applications >accessories>calculator and

understandable symbols like "times" was the asterisk. And when I wanted

parenthesis on for it to work. Otherwise it would say "malformed

[Bug 35601] Re: [X600] Black screen with DRI

2006-06-22 Thread sean
This sounds a lot like bug #28925, about others, most of which have had
more success using the radeon drivers, or getting the fglrx driver by
apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx (which is what I did, because I've had
similar troubles with an X800). I would try that.

I've noticed most of the ATI cards newer than the radeon 9600 don't work
with the ATI driver, and I suspect the problem may be somehow linked.
But that's just a suspicion. I'm not sure what we could do about that.

[Bug 50656] bittorrent refuses to download debian-testing-amd64-binary-x.iso files

2006-06-22 Thread sean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bittorrent

When opening the file debian-testing-amd64-binary-x.ist (x being any of
the binary cd numbers for debian) in bittorrent or ktorrent (and
probably bittornado, I haven't tried), an error occurs, and the download
fails. In ktorrent, this causes an immediate crash of the program, and
whenever ktorrent is restarted, an error message appears: "Cannot
create /debian-testing-amd64-binary-2.iso: Permission denied." (I
attempted to download to the home folder, not root). I admit, this is a
very odd problem.

Other notes: dpkg-reconfigure ktorrent removes the error message
This bug only seems to apply to debian-testing-amd64-binary-x.iso.torrent

Yes, just updated my Hardy last night, the Cacti upgrade worked perfectly,
including the actual cacti upgrade script.

Thanks.

[Bug 217281] [NEW] Atheros Driver Does Not Work

2008-04-14 Thread sean
Public bug reported:

The Ubuntu install detects the Atheros Communications Wifi card, and
uses a driver which does not work.

It says that it is implementing unsafe hardware, but nothing is
implemented. It does not detect wifi access points.

Here is a fix for it:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=512828

We need to get all prepackaged hardware to work out of the box so that
we can get more people to switch over to ubuntu on their own.

I can provide screen shots etc, if desired. I was running 08.04 beta (not sure
what build).
Laptop is an Acer 5570z.

[Bug 134972] 915resolution does not resume from hibernate

2007-08-26 Thread Sean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: 915resolution

I have an HP Pavilioin dv1000t laptop with 1280x768 resolution supported
through 915resolution.

Running the latest Feisty.

When I hibernate the system (works OK) and then resume, the system fails
to 1024x768 resolution.

Also, I'm using uswsusp for hibernate because the default did not work
for me.

[Bug 184715] Odd behavior with H193Wk display at 1440x900.

2008-01-20 Thread Sean
Public bug reported:

My H193Wk 19" display (does not use DVI) doesn't seem to work well at
its native resolution of 1440x900. Every other resolution fills the
screen just fine.

Its pretty easy to reproduce as long as you have the same display. The
default settings as well as the modeline solution I found elsewhere on
the forum produced the same results, and yes it was a clean install.
Currently 7.10 is installed, with the latest updates. Oddly enough on my
current system, the nvidia proprietary drivers fix this problem. Can't
do that with the radeon machine :(

I have posted the xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log, lspci -vv and lspci -vvn
results on the forum already, as well as taken a photo of the problem. I
don't see way to attach text or photos here as I'm pretty new to all
this, so I'll just link to it all:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=672801, and its probably easier
to read there. I'll repost the info here once I figure out how, haha.

This is the reversed polarity bug in the edid parser in the ubuntu xserver 1.3.
I thought ubuntu had patched this, but perhaps not. Make sure you have the
latest xserver bits from ubuntu.

I followed these instructions and just reproduced the bug by commenting
out the preferredmode after making sure everything was up to date. Not
sure what to do now though.

[Bug 181510] freeradius: perl symbol lookup error

2008-01-09 Thread Sean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: freeradius

FreeRadius can start a perl module script, but when asked to do so it
cannot find libraries:

freeradius: symbol lookup error:
/usr/lib/perl/5.8/auto/Socket/Socket.so: undefined symbol:
Perl_Tstack_sp_ptr

Tested on: Ununtu 7.10 server.
See also http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg41030.html
Perl -V & fradius output is below.

Compiling freeRadius for a tarball solves the problem, so presumably there is
an issue with the way FreeRadius was built for Ubuntu?
Any suggestions?

Sean

[Bug 180352] Re: [backuppc] v3.10 package upgrade request

2008-01-11 Thread Sean
I've been reading through much of the Ubuntu docs on development, contribution,
releases etc.
I now have the feeling that version upgrades only occur between releases, so
therefore backuppc v3.1 will only be packaged for, and tested with hardy.

So a sysadmin of a backuppc server should expect to upgrade his Ubuntu
release every 6 months to stay current with developments in backuppc.

Have I understood the process correctly?

[Bug 180352] [backuppc] v3.10 package upgrade request

2008-01-04 Thread Sean
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: backuppc

Hi,

I'm a Gutsy 7.10 user that finds backuppc really great.
Now, I'd like to upgrade to v3.10 (from v3.0), and would prefer to use the
proper
packages than going to tarballs.
On http://packages.qa.debian.org/b/backuppc.html I see that v3.10 is
now in testing.
On http://packages.ubuntu.com/gutsy/utils/backuppc there are no notes on v3.10
for Ubuntu e.g. who maintains for Ubuntu.

My questions:
- Does the Ubuntu version have non debian mods?
- What is the procedure for making the debian package available on Ubuntu?
- *Can I offer any help* in this process? I have three Ubuntu
7.10 servers running that I could test on, if that helps.

I looked at http://doc.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/packagingguide/C/, which
describes packaging, but where is the process for Universe packages
defined?

Thanks in advance,

Sean

This is a freshly install Jeos Vm, updated with patches, so there are no
other apps that could interfere.

I install mysql-server beforehand, and left the root password blank.

'apt-cache policy cacti' shows only one version of cacti available, so I
cannot try out any other builds.

The cacti DB has been created and does contain tables. The cacti install has
not finished though, e.g. /etc/cacti/apache.conf has not been created.
Then I did
  cd /var/www
  ln -s /usr/share/cacti/site cacti
  /etc/init.d/apache2 reload
and fired up the browser and connected to the cacti URL which allowed me to
complete the installation.

So its not a show stopper, cacti still runs.
I'm still learning about Debian packages, where is the install script, so I can
step through it and see what steps did not get executed?

Thanks in advance,

Sean

Apologies and yes, your are right. I did search, but not well enough it

Re: [Bug 193209] Re: Cacti install stops on "dbconfig-common: flushing administrative password"

2008-03-28 Thread Sean
I've read FeatureFreezeException but am a little confused.

I have to be a member of ubuntu-release or more likely
motu-release<https://launchpad.net/%7Emotu-release>for that?

"Requests for freeze exceptions for main should be filed as bugs in
launchpad against the relevant package (or just "Ubuntu" if the package is
not available yet). Once the bug is filed and the necessary information is
available, subscribe
ubuntu-release<https://launchpad.net/%7Eubuntu-release>(main,
restricted) or motu-release<https://launchpad.net/%7Emotu-release>(universe,
multiverse)."

Its not an upstream problem, so I've a bit fizzy as how to submit an
Exception?
Maybe its under featureFreeze?

I'm supposed to subscribe to a motu-release mailing list, and then post a
request to that?

Thanks,

Sean

[Bug 193209] Re: Cacti install stops on "dbconfig-common: flushing administrative password"

2008-03-28 Thread Sean
According to http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=470066,
dated 17th March,

"We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of
cacti" ... cacti_0.8.7b-1.1.

As regards "ucf" is this now fixed?

So what do we need to do to get a installable cacti in Hardy?
- get a newer upsteam version of cacti
- or ucf, or just comment out the ucf
- or adapt /var/lib/dpkg/info/cacti.postinst (if i understand, commenting the
ucf line works)?

The hardy release is close and I'm never to Ubuntu packaging/processes,
I'd appreciate any hints.

Myself, I had to do the following on both 7.10 and 8.04 beta to get cacti
working
(See 'Invalid PHP_SELF Path' http://forums.cacti.net/post-130180.html)
  vi /etc/cacti/apache.conf
#Alias /cacti /usr/share/cacti/site

   cd /var/www
   ln -s /usr/share/cacti/site cacti
   /etc/init.d/apache2 reload

So perhaps the line:
   ucf /usr/share/doc/cacti/cacti.apache.conf /etc/cacti/apache.conf
is no good anyway?

[Bug 108743] "Desktops Effects" crapped up my computer that has a nVidia GeForce2 Go graphics card, upon reboot.

2007-04-21 Thread sean
Public bug reported:

My graphics card:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 Go] (rev
b2)

I opened Desktops Effects which was installed recently when I updated to
Fiesty. I was prompted by a pop-up window with the following text:
"
Enable the driver?

NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver

This driver is required to fully utilise the 3D potential of NVIDIA
graphics cards, as well as provide 2D acceleration of newer cards.

If you wish to enable desktop effects, this driver is required.

If this driver is not enabled, you will not be able to enable desktop effects
and will not be able to run software that requires 3D acceleration, such as
some games.
"
Upon clicking "enable driver" the first time it brought up the Update Manager
with the necessary driver that was requested and warned that it was not open
source or something like that (I can't quite remember and can't duplicate it).
After the installation of the driver another window popped up and prompted me
to reboot my computer for the new driver to take affect. During the reboot,
about the time where the splash screen should have asked me for my username and
password, the left side of my screen turned an orange color similar to that of
the splash screen while the right side remained almost entirely black. This
description is very similar to Bug #106309 except that nothing was working;
there were no details on the splash screen and I could not enter my
username/password. After examining my network interfaces (rebooted in
safemode) via "sudo vi /etc/network/interfaces", this is what I found:

Section "Device"
Identifier "NVIDIA Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 Go]"
Driver "nvidia"
Busid "PCI:1:0:0"
Option "AddARGBVisuals""True"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
Option "NoLogo""True"
EndSection

I changed the driver back to "nv":
Driver "nv"
and rebooted and was back to a working computer.

[Bug 107616] Poor security defaults

2007-04-18 Thread Sean
Public bug reported:

Security by default in ubuntu is not up to scratch at all, I understand
that iptables in the kernel does the job but it's not acceptable and
very basic for this day and age.

Please can we have Firestarter (frontend) installed by default or ICMP
filtering enabled in iptables and or Firestarter. Even Windows XP SP2
has better default firewall security than Ubuntu and the fact that a
cracker can ping your machine to get a response to say something is
there is not good. We should not make the mistake (like Windows) with
security defaults, just because we are low on the radar of crackers dont
mean we can step back, after all thats what SELinux are in the kernel
for.

[Bug 69786] Usplash and Virtual Terminals Not Working

2006-11-01 Thread Sean
Public bug reported:

On my Powermac G4 (quicksilver) running Edgy, during boot up, there is
no splash screen. After the yaboot prompt, the screen goes completely
white for a minute or so, and eventually the gdm login screen appears.

Once the computer has started, when I try to switch to a virtual
terminal, (control + alt + F Key) - I get, a black and white distorted
version of my previous screen.

On shutdown, the screen looks like it does when I try to get a virtual
terminal - the screen shows a black and white distorted version of my
last screen.

Both problems started when I upgraded to Dapper.

I am using a GeForce2 MX card with the nv driver.

Here is my yaboot.conf:

image=/boot/vmlinux
label=Linux
read-only
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append="quiet splash"

If I remove "quiet" from the append line, the computer will not boot
(monitor goes to standby (no signal) after yaboot prompt). If I remove
"splash", there is no change (screen still goes white, still no
terminals).

I am having the same problem on my Apple G4 Quicksilver, however, I
can't seem to get the splash screen to work even after recompiling the
kernel with riva, the screen just goes dark until gdm starts (it was
white before I recompiled the kernel). I have tried reinstalling
usplash, but it doesn't seem to be working. Also, only VT 1 works for
me, and the resolution is not correct. The other screens are simply
blank (black).
