[Bug 551950] Re: gnome-bluetooth cannot use pin = 1234

2014-09-25 Thread Nathan Nathan
Freaking 4 years and this fundamental problem not fixed in 14.04.
Another thing: in the Ubuntu Software Center the Bluetooth package
contains most of the configuration applets for gnome that are totally
unrelated to bluetooth like keyboard settings and desktop fonts, It says
it in the description but I thought it was a mistake. That makes no
freaking sense. Why the hell is it called bluetooth then?

I'm always willing to give more information, but I think you better re-
read the bug report.

[Bug 262005] [NEW] Sometimes torcs give strange colors

2008-08-27 Thread Nathan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: torcs

Torcs can give some strange colors on some moments (See attached
screenshot).

When driving behind others (no AI player visible in rear-mirror) all
seems ok, but when an AI player is behind you colors become strange (and
impossible to play)

I'm using intrepid, on a macbook (64bit, dual core, intel graphics card)

[Bug 262029] [NEW] tty is not visible

2008-08-27 Thread Nathan
Public bug reported:

When starting intrepid switching to a vritual terminal (ctrl-alt-F1)
gives only a cursor.

It seems that it takes my user input, because when I type my login name
+ password, and switch back to the GUI, and open gnome-terminal, and run
who, I see myself logged in on tty1.

But the only visibile thing is the cursor, not really helpfull.

When booting the rescue mode I see the terminals, when resuming the boot, the
terminal stays visible after the GUI is loaded.

Why aren't the terminals visible in normal boot?

[Bug 364697] [NEW] Evince is very sloaw to load a file + 100%CPU

2009-04-21 Thread Nathan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

When I try to open this file:
http://webh01.ua.ac.be/roosters/examenroosters_2de_semester/EXA2INF1.pdf it
takes 17 seconds before I see the file (exclusive download). Although it is
only one page with not much on it (on windows with adobe reader it takes less
than one second (another computer, tested by another user)).
When I zoom in the page it takes also a few seconds before everything is
redrawn.

My processor is intel core 2 duo, and while loading it uses one CPU for
100%.

I'm using up to date jaunty (evince 2.26.0-0ubuntu1, poppler
0.10.5-1ubuntu2)

Clearly this is a performance problem somewhere in the evince stack (evince,

2009-05-05 Thread nathan
I tried fiddling with the cpu freq settings on my machine and it seems
like there is less flickering at higher frequencies. However, I could
only set the frequency of my cpu down to 1.0GHz and as high as 2.0GHz.
While there was less flickering at 2.0GHz there was still some and it's
hard to quantify how much less than at 1.0GHz. I haven't tried any of
the more bleeding-edge drivers yet.

something else took it's place? Is there a workaround for re-enabling

[Bug 278598] Re: cdrom/dvd names are not correct

2008-10-17 Thread Nathan
Hmm, I found the problem.

A while ago I ran powertop, and it advised me to disable polling on the

For some reason, I was thinking that maybe that was the problem now, and
I reenabled polling on the drive. Now the behaviour works as expected.

I don't know of this is intended behaviour of disabling polling, so I'm
not closing this bug. If it is intended this bug may be closed.

[Bug 219057] Re: Bluetooth does not coexist with WiFi

2008-09-24 Thread nathan
This is an issue that will exist until the specifications of Bluetooth
and Wifi become more collaperative. Unfortuntely, Bluetooth and Wifi
both run on the ISM band (2.4 to 2.4835 GHz). When Wifi encounters
interferance, it simply tries to resend the packet. This causes Wifi to
slow to a halt as it will continue to try to resent the packet until it
is successful easily cutting Wifi speeds in half or usually much more
than half. When Bluetooth encounters interferance, it jumps onto another
frequency and tries sending the packet again (it would perform the jump
whether or not interferance was discovered on that particular frequency
as it's part of the Bluetooth spec to preform frequency "hopping"). Due
to the fact that this frequency "hopping" occurs at a hardware level and
not software, you cannot force bluetooth to use or to not use certain
channels. Unfortunately, this is hardware dependant to my knowledge.

[Bug 278598] [NEW] cdrom/dvd names are not correct

2008-10-05 Thread Nathan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gvfs

When I puts a cdrom/dvd in my macbook the name of the DVD is shown in
nautilus/open file dialogs/etc...

When I eject the cdrom the name of the cdrom disappears (all ok until now)
Then I put ANOTHER cdrom/dvd in the drive => The name of the first DVD appears
instead of the new one. This is until I reboot (or login/logout, didn't test)

Another strange effect:
When I enter a music cdrom in the drive it is even worse: It is displayed as
Audio CD, when I eject and enter another cdrom/dvd which is not an audio cd and
then double click on the Audio-CD icon (in "Computer" in nautilus) it says that
the cdrom drive is not an Audio CD and could not be mounted.
The Audio-CD should be replace by Cdrom-Drive when the drive is ejected.
(Cdrom-drive is the initial state when I start the computer with no cd/dvd in
the drive).

I'm using Intrepid

This is already longer than today, and I didn't found a similar bug
report, so I wonder if I'm the only one with this problem, or I can't
search.

[Bug 82617] Re: GDM starts before home directories mounted

2008-08-18 Thread Nathan
Hi, I have this problem too on Ubuntu Intreprid (latest updates)

The cause of the problem is that my /home directory is on a ext3
partition and my / partition is on a reiserfs partition.

The /home partition reached the max mount count (31), so normally I'm used that
it checks the drive in splash, but for some reason it didn't (When switching on
splash boot messages after a reboot It reported "mounting local file systems:
failed") and went on booting.
When in gdm, trying to login it said 'COuld not login becasue /home/nathan'
doesn't exists, Login anyway? Login anyway failed becasue of an erorr on .dmrc
(file permissions were not correct, but gdm probably couldn't even find the
file.

At that time I didn't knew what was going on, but I suspected the max
mount count. But since my virtual terminals doesn't work - I guess I
have to file another bug report for that) - and I couldn't login, I
could not check that.

I then booted with another kernel: 2.6.26=> (I only have latest 2.6.26
from repositiories, and 2.6.27 from someone elses repository), but same
story.

I then booted in foresight linux (which has its /home directory on the
same partition as its /) and ran fsck on my ubuntu's /home partition.
Indeed a check was forced. After the fs check was done I rebooted in
ubuntu and everything was ok.

Conclusion:
If the /home partition is checked the user should be reported that (as in
previous version), maybe the boot can continue but in any case gdm should wait
for the check to end (or gdm should show a nice message, and only tolerate
login after the check has finished)

I can confirm this solution works.

Simply don't forget to restart NetworkManager, just changing the file
will not have immediate effect.

(with root privileges)
$: /etc/init.d/NetworkManager restart

[Bug 262029] Re: tty is not visible

2008-08-28 Thread Nathan
Hmm, it seems that removing "vga=791" fixed the problem.

Anyway I see this as a bug, since that statement should give the exact
same output with or without.

I guess this is a bug in grub and/or the linux kernel and/or the getty
program.

[Bug 362997] [NEW] totem hides notifications

2009-04-17 Thread Nathan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

When I'm playing an audio file in totem (or any other file) the notification
messages do not appear anymore (even when not in fullscreen mode).
When I close totem they start appearing again.
This is with the default ubuntu notification (not tested with upstream
notifications)

I want that notifications are shown always (even in fullscreen mode).
Maybe it should be a configuration option if many people prefer that is
not shown

* Show notifications always when totem is running (also in fullscreen mode)
* Show notifications only when in normal screen mode
* Show notifications never (although I don't know if this is usefull)

As I know it is too late to change any User Interface elements (or any
non -critical change) I hope this will be fixed in 9.10.

[Bug 352658] Re: evolution does not collect mail fromcomcast ao

2009-04-03 Thread Nathan
Hi,

I have the same problem:

I have several mail accounts (all IMAP) and since tuesday I didn't
receive any mails via evolution anymore. When I check online my mail
(via webmail) I see that their are actually some mails for me which
didn't show up in evolution.

For some reason all messages were marked as spam, got in my local spam
box (without any notification) and were removed when I closed evolution
(removed from the local spam list, and from the server)

Not checking for spam is a (temporary) solution. My spam filter was
bogofilter...

I'm using Jaunty.

2008-09-01 Thread Nathan
This seems to be fixed (upstream) in the new Gedit 2.23.91

Now the problem is that when I try to save the file I get an error:
"Could not open ftp://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/filename. Check if you typed the
correct location and try again." (Self translated from dutch)

Very strange, I try to create a new file, ofcourse that it doesn't
exists yet.

Should I create a new bug?

[Bug 19767] Re: Kde help search fails too quietly if htdig is not installed

2006-07-25 Thread Nathan
I can verify this bug in Kubuntu Dapper.

FINDCMD: find /usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/ -name index.docbook
Creating index for 'kde_application_manuals'
htdig failed

Installing htdig through apt, I'm informed that the htdig package has
been split in to the stable and unstable packages. The stable package is
installed by default. It seems the stable version should be moved to the
main repositories so that it can be a KDE dependency and the unstable
should be left in Universe.

[Bug 157316] Network not resuming from suspend on Acer laptop

2007-10-25 Thread Nathan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: acpi-modules-2.6.22-14-generic-di

When resuming from suspend to RAM, the network list is empty, not
allowing any connectivity. Also, sometimes the network doesn't load
when the computer is first started and must be restarted to get
connection, wireless or wired.

The biggest problem is that when resuming from suspend, the device no
longer shows in the network manager. I am using an Acer Travelmate
2310.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect to a wireless network
2. Suspend system
3. Wake the system
4. Attempt to connect to network, no devices listed.

[Bug 215330] [NEW] GDM configuration for faces is confusing

2008-04-10 Thread Nathan
Public bug reported:

I have selected the Human List and for the Style: Theme.

Result: I get the Human List theme but no faces are shown. (its an empty
box)

I was wondering how that was possible, and looked into the configuration.
I selected than for the Style: Theme and faces.
Logged out, and saw that it was what I wanted (Human List with faces).

This configuration seems confusing. I selected the Human List theme, so it
would be stupid to not have the faces.
A solution for this confusing situations is:
 * Remove the Style: theme + faces, and show the faces always.
 * Show only the non-faces themes when the Style "Theme" is selected, and the
faces when the "Theme + faces" style is selected.

I'm using Hardy

Nathan

Howto reproduce:

Log in userA: swithc users and log in userB.
userB log out => come in the locked screen dialog. Strange side effect (but
maybe doesn't have to do with this): sometimes I can't use my mouse to click on
a button here, I have to use the keyboard.
Anyway in the lock screen dialog switch users again. login userB. logout userB

It seems to happen nearly always (the time it didn't happen after 2
login/logout sessions I did this:
login userA: switch user and login userB. Logout userB, unlock screen of userA.
switch users, login to userB. logout userB (nothing weird happened), swithc
users in the lock screen of userA, loging userB, logout userA => same crash.)

[Bug 208231] [NEW] Evince opens web links in gedit

2008-03-28 Thread Nathan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

When I click on an URL link in evince it opens the downloaded HTML
source in gedit.

I expected it to show me the site in my preferred webbrowser (firefox)

When I change in nautilus to open .html files with KWrite evince opens
them with KWrite. When I choose for firefox-3.0 (I had to add it myself)
it opens in firefox with nautilus, but evince still uses the old KWrite
setting.

I'm using Hardy with evince 2.22.0-0ubuntu2, nautilus 2.22.0-0ubuntu3

[Bug 208231] Re: Evince opens web links in gedit

2008-03-28 Thread Nathan
Hi,

I tested it out with a clean profile: nearly the same happens.

1: Open a PDF document, click on an external link http://something.org
2: firefox opens the website => All ok

Since I'm a webdeveloper, and opens .html documents often to edit them I
changed the default program to open .html document from firefox to gedit
3: Open nautilus, search or create a .html file
4: Right-click on it to open the properties menu
5: go to the Open With tab
6: Select Text editor (gedit)
7: Close the menu, and click once again on the link in the PDF document
8: Gedit downloads the document, opens it and shows the HTML code

9: Repeat step 5-7, but choose firefox again
10: Firefox opens as expected

Maybe this is normal behaviour for evince because it uses gvfs or
whatever to open the documents, but it is not what I want that it does.
Maybe it is not an evince bug, but a gnome/gvfs/nautilus/whatever bug.

If you say it is my system (but it is not the user configuration, since
I used a clean new profile), I want to know what can cause it. It would
be already very useful to know what method evince uses to open links
(gnome-open, ...).

[Bug 209373] [NEW] Choose "open with ..." for dvd

2008-03-30 Thread Nathan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

In the new nautilus version of gnome (2.22) you can choose what happens
when a dvd-video is found.

The current possibilities are:
* Do nothing
* Ask always
* Open with totem
* Browser directory

I can't choose to open it with wxVLC, Thoggen or whatever program I want.
A solution would be to: Give an option: Open with ...: you select your own
program.
Or: (And I think this is done for Totem), add a DVD-video mimetype for vlc and
Thoggen (and maybe other programs), and list all apps that can handle that
mimetype in the list (The last part is already implemented I believe, but I'm
not sure)
If specific bugs for vlc and thoggen should be posted: please say me so I can
do.

I'm using hardy

[Bug 209148] Re: hibernation - network not restarting

2008-04-05 Thread Nathan
Well, I seem to have the same problem with Hardy

After an hibernate (computer sleeps, but uses power), I need to restart
my ethernet cable.

ifup: interface eth0 already configured
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo ifdown eth0
RTNETLINK answers: No such process
SIOCDELRT: No such process

This is the way I do it, I guess it is possible to do it with networkmanager
itselfs.

I didn't try with suspend to ram.

[Bug 212759] [NEW] firefox crash opening corrupted png

2008-04-06 Thread Nathan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.0

I'm trying to open
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/gregkh/kernel_history/developer_graph-2.6.22.png

In firefox 3.0 beta 5 (on Hardy) firefox crashes (without showing an
apport screen)

On firefox 2.0/Epiphany with mozilla 1.8 (on another computer with no
ubuntu) it shows: "This image can not be displayed because it contains
errors"

This is clearly a regression that should be solved.

THis should be possible to do: in the first place with gconf (or
configuration file) and in the longer term a GUI (maybe not all aspects,
but at least some of them).

Rationale:

Color settings:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/notify-osd/+bug/334310?comments=all
(Mirco has confirmed the problem and seems to work on a solution)
Presentation settings: If notifications should be visible in fullscreen or not
(and what priority should be shown)
Font settings: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/notify-osd/+bug/335383
(is already being worked on...)
Also things like blur and fade out settings should be configurable

Timeout settings: the time notifications stay should also be
configurable: some people read faster than others, so the very-sensible
default (of x time per n characters) can be good, but some people maybe
like y time per n characters.

Placement settings (which is the real cause of the bug report: center-right is
in my option very bad UI design (maybe it is just an experiment): Probably it
is more noticeable than top-right but it is also more probable that it is in
your way:
While reading (a big text) the part I'm reading is often more or less in the
center, so I can do 2 things when such a notification happens: Scroll down so I
can read the text again, or move my mouse so it appears above the notification
so I can read the text under it...
It thought notify-osd was about "passive" notifications that didn't take your
attention so you were not obliged to do anything, with the new (non-)sensible
non-configurable default setting I have to react (sometimes) to a
notification...

[Bug 362997] Re: totem hides notifications

2009-08-28 Thread Nathan
I guess it has to be changed to "fixed"

Current behavior is that non-critical notifications do not appear in
fullscreen mode. Probably this is expected, but still I want to see
those on certain occasions (when I'm watching a movie on my own without
family, I don't care that I see pidgin notifications)

So I think there should be a configuration option: "Show all
notifications when in fullscreen mode" that when enabled shows all
notifications, and when disabled only shows the critical ones...

[Bug 174874] Re: IPP Printing fails if server is identified by name rather than address

2009-08-29 Thread Nathan
I do have a similar problem.

I have a printer shared on a local network. When I try to add the
printer within gnome (so I guess system-config-printer) and fill in alfa
as hostname it can't find it. When I use the IP directly it works.
Adding the printer however does not change the IP to the hostname, so it
works. But filling in the IP manually is not quite userfriendly...

alfa is defined in /etc/hosts but is not found when doing host alfa, but
using alfa in firefox or with ping or with resolveip works as
expected...

I'm using karmic, but the same problem existed in earlier versions
too...

Output from some terminal commands...

[Bug 508399] [NEW] Confusing and duplicate menu items for some programs

2010-01-16 Thread Nathan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alacarte

When I go in edit->menu (= alacarte) I see some duplicate entries, and
some confusing ones.

I know (think) that this is not alacarte's fault but more that of the
applications themselves and the freedesktop specification. But I think
alacarte devs will know better than me where to fix this issue (because
I'm not sure if it is not alacarte's fault)

Let's take some examples:

* Banshee is listed 3 times (with only one visible in the menu) with as title:
Banshee media player
* F-spot is listed once in submenu Graphics, and twice in Misc ("overige" in
duch)
* More in misc: Theme installation is listed. When I enable this one (just for
fun) and start it nothing happens.

When I dig deeper I see the parameters for banshee and f-spot are
different for the 3 items (two that do something with a media device,
one to start the app). Similar for f-spot.

I see why 3 .desktop files are needed, since sometimes (eg attaching a
mp3-player) you need other parameters then parameters for just starting
the app.

I see 2 solutions:
1) Change the specification so that some entries are not possible to see in
menu editor, but only as helper apps. (and/or use this in the mentioned
.desktop files). This will solve that some .desktop files are only visible in
corresponding context, and are not showing up twice or more. (which is
confusing for users).
2) Change the specification so that the 3 desktop files could be merged in one,
but with different exec commando's depending on the context. (or if this
already exist in the spec, use it in mentioned .desktop files).

So do these specifications exists, and if not where can I request it to
be added to the spec?

Greetings,
Nathan

[Bug 501099] [NEW] system hangs when using dual head and fglrx

2009-12-28 Thread Nathan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx

System randomly hangs when using dual monitors. X server becomes
completely unresponsive, unable to switch to tty (ctrl+alt+f1).
Strangely, if there was audio playing, it continues fine.

The hang usually occurs when watching video on one screen and doing
something else on the other. I have repeated the crash using VLC and
Totem. The hang has also occured when running a virtual machine one one
head and something else on the other.

The system becomes unresponsive before any logs are written to disk, so
there is nothing in kern.log, syslog, or messages. When the hang
reoccurs I will hopefully find some log messages to help here.

More info:

Kernel: 2.6.31-16
xorg-driver-fglrx: 2:8.660
Compiz is enabled.

I couldn't find any similar bugs here. #333027 is close, but my bug
does not involve video playback exclusively.
