[Bug 89362] Re: system locking up (forcing a hard reboot)

2009-05-12 Thread Lau
Unfortunately, indeed.
This is still an issue with 9.04; it already happened few times since my
upgrade.

Outcome:

Logging into Launchpad...

Bug title: Asus F3JC system locking up (forcing a hard reboot)
Collecting apport information for source package
linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic...
Uploading additional information to Launchpad bug...
   short text data...
Error connecting to Launchpad: HTTP Error 401: Unauthorized
You have to allow "Change anything" privileges.

Reading the page for setting privileges on launchpad, I see:
"Change anything: The application will be able to access Launchpad on your
behalf for reading and changing anything, including private data."

Not something I am considering unless there is a possible control over
the "reading and changing anything" bit.

Here is the output of dmesg in the meanwhile (as per

The problem is still around with 8.04.

I have not tried 8.10, since this is my main machine at the moment, and
the reported network card surprises some had put me off.

If you are considering an update, know that 2.6.24-21-generic does *not*
solve the problem for me.

[Bug 89362] Re: system locking up (forcing a hard reboot)

2008-05-24 Thread Lau
I have had no time to play with the "acpi=off" option and enjoyed two weeks of
freeze-free bliss... until today.
I am a little worried playing with that one option on a notebook (doesn't no
acpi mean no fan ?).

When seeing the early signs of a freeze (that is the light for the hard disk
continuously on for few seconds, without blinking),
dashing "tail /var/log/messages" gave a last line like:
kernel: [4249.908524] res 40/00:00:00 [... many 00 ...] Emask 0x4 (timeout)

After reboot that last line does not appear in log/messages anymore (makes
sense, no I/O when the problem occurs... but might
appear on the spot because of some sort of buffering happening).

Since ACPI's involment in the case is suspected, here is what I have in logs
with ACPI
(no idea whether this is relevant or not)
[ 32.899330] ACPI: Looking for DSDT in initramfs... error, file /DSDT.aml
not found.

Thanks,

L.

[Bug 124159] Re: Broadcom bcm43xx Wireless driver regression in gutsy

2007-10-29 Thread lau
I have the issue too with gutsy released.

uname -r: 2.6.22-14-386
lspci: Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM94311MCG wlan mini-PCI (rev
01)

I blacklisted the bcm43xx native driver and compiled ndiswrapper 1.47 to use
bcmwl5 one.
ndiswrapper -l
bcmwl5 : driver installed
device (14E4:4311) present (alternate driver: bcm43xx)

I can scan the network, I can see ESSIDs, but I can't get any IP from
DHCP servers.

The line 'sudo iwconfig eth1 rate 5.5M fixed' or whatever Meg didn't
solve the problem.

Re: [Bug 89362] Re: system locking up (forcing a hard reboot)

2008-04-20 Thread Lau
Gareth,

I have finally tried some of the options proposed at
http://linux-ata.org/faq.html#combined

At the time you sent the email I was not experiencing lockups, but
since kernel 2.6.24 in Hardy I have problems every few hours
(I suspect 2.6.24 being particularly problematic, as it causes a "kernel
NULL reference" Oops on my other machine, but that's the object of a
separate bug report).

So far I looked at:
- BIOS settings: Recommended (where BIOS permits): Change BIOS IDE
mode from "legacy" or "combined" mode to "AHCI" (recommended), "RAID"
or "native".

Nothing indicated on the page is possible with my BIOS

- kernel parameters: Boot with the kernel commandline parameter
"combined_mode=libata" or "combined_mode=ide" to allow the specified
driver to claim all IDE ports.

No real effect when applying either of libata or ide. Still locks up :/

Thanks,

L.

Problems with ata2 seem strongly correlated with system freeze
(hard to trace because of the complete freeze).

  The symptoms are generally:
  1- freeze on X
2- if quick enough, I can switch to a console (Ctrl + F*)
3- trying to log on the console prompts error messages like
  "ata2: speed down requests"
  "Error sending Cmd #07"
"Write error on swap device", etc...
The systems never get to log me in
4- trying to access the computer remotely is unsuccessful (the machine does
  not answer anymore)
5- only a hard reboot is possible

Re: [Bug 89362] Re: system locking up (forcing a hard reboot)

2008-05-04 Thread Lau
Gareth,

Thanks for the quick following up. I have to moderate my earlier
complain about kernel 2.6.
Doing further tests, I noticed that firefox was able to cause trouble
(wild CPU and disk usage
and I am becoming a little quick to force a computer shutdown because
of the freezes).

Nevertheless, I still experience freezes.

Here are the data:

1- "uname"
Linux localhost 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 13:23:42 UTC 2008
i686 GNU/Linux
2- dmesg
(see file attached - done right after a freeze-forced reboot; doing
dmesg during a freeze does not let me save the output
anywhere on the disk, neither on a thumbdrive, and email software is
frozen - all IO on storage
seem unavailable)
3- lspci (see file attached)
4- dmidecode (see file attached)

Notes: I have found nothing that seemed relevant in either syslog,
kern.log, or messages.
log/messages says
ata2.00: ATAPI: TSSTcorpCD/DVDW TS-L632D, SC04, max UDMA/33
about the optical drive.

All the above was done while booting with the kernel parameter
combined_mode=libata

2008-03-12 Thread Lau
I do have that, and I did cross-flash it some time ago
(I have an ASUS notebook, but I took the chance since other did).

However, the problem is not completely gone. The frequence of the freezes
seems lower to me, but they do happen.
(A recent example was during my upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy-alpha6:
I had 2 freezes during the process, forcing me to rescue thing manually).

Thanks for the hint still, I have not explored the PATA/SATA lead yet.

[Bug 104333] lost network after wake-up on ASUS F3J

2007-04-07 Thread Lau
Public bug reported:

After a wake-up, the wired network on eth0 is lost, and nothing simple
else but a reboot seems to be able to solve the problem.
(nothing when playing with the gnome network thing, neither
when doing 'sudo /etc/init.d/network restart').

[Bug 89362] Re: system locking up (forcing a hard reboot)

2007-04-08 Thread Lau
Well, I did not have any freeze for a week... and I just had one right after
entering my previous post :-/
(and that was not during a wake-up... it just happened suddenly while using the
machine).

[Bug 91158] reflexive link in /usr/bin/X11

2007-03-10 Thread Lau
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

[On an up-to-date feisty]
[The install is an update from edgy to feisty - made some time ago]

There is a directory X11 in /usr/bin/X11/ that is linked
to ".".

(2 entry in the list below)

$ ls -ldh /usr/bin/X11/X*
-rwsr-sr-x 1 root root 7.6K 2007-03-09 20:58 /usr/bin/X11/X
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root1 2006-12-28 18:15 /usr/bin/X11/X11 -> .

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1.6M 2007-02-28 21:21 /usr/bin/X11/Xorg

I might overlook something (I am not an X11 expert), but this is
looking odd.

Ok.

[ I can't help:

I will not try to discuss "why this is needed in older X",
but I do not see the need for it when one has a recent X then.

In other words, when one updates to xorg-7.2 how come particularities
of say XFree86-from-some-time-ago have to remain ? Did I miss what
xorg-7.2 has to be made compatible with ?

Re: [Bug 89595] Re: failure while starting a maintenance shell

2007-03-13 Thread Lau
pretty much the same version anyone running feisty has I guess:

GNU bash, version 3.2.10(1)-release (i486-pc-linux-gnu)
Copyright (C) 2005 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

The problem is simple (and there is no need to risk a filesystem).
What happens was:

- fsck started after a forced reboot (libata is sometimes having
trouble... but this is an other reported bug)
- fsk should only check unmounted directoryl: everything but / root is unmounted
(in my case, that's /var, /usr/, /usr/local, /tmp ).
- when checking 'fsck' found things to fix, and because of the default
configuration in
ubuntu stops there (rather than automatically trying to fix the problem).
- fsck stopping causes a start of the maintenance shell, but nothing
that was unmounted
for the fsck is mounted back.
- the maintenance shell missing things in /usr, the show stops here.

It was possible for me to fix my disk, but what happened was not
something I wished
to a less experienced user.

Cheers,

Laurent

[Bug 89365] no sound on Asus F3J notebook

2007-03-02 Thread Lau
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 63228 ***

Sound only comes after compiling and installing alsa 1.0.14rc2 (or rc1).

.14rc3 seems to be on its way... I do not what is the expected release date for
.14,
but that would a very good idea to have it in if the ubuntu release focuses on
hardware compatibilty.

The trouble seems to be with libata.

http://bugs.donarmstrong.com/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=402751

The absence of logs for the complete freeze points in direction
of trouble with the harddisk (and the system unable to cough
up what is happening to a log file).

[Bug 89595] failure while starting a maintenance shell

2007-03-03 Thread Lau
Public bug reported:

During an automated fsck (triggered after a hard reboot caused by a system
lock-up),
the check for file system integrity exits with a failure,
and starting the maintenance shell exits with a failure as well
(errors like "cannot find lesspipe", etc...).

This is likely caused by having the partition on which the executables
are not mounted (only "/" was apparently mounted). It would be nice
to have a fallback, or at least an explicit message for less-advanced user.

nop.
The maintenance shell started after a problem with fsck
and *only "/" was mounted*, as should be mentioned in the bug report -
I have "/var" in a different partition, that was not mounted-.
The problem with the maintenance shell is that a number of executable
could not be found - I have "/usr" mounted on a different partition.

(there is an other problem with fsk, that requires manual intervention,
but that will be for an other bug report I guess.

[Bug 356139] Re: pata_via can't access 2nd SATA HDD (err_mask=0x1)

2010-01-04 Thread lau
Same issue here
VIA Artigo A2000 barebone
I am running 8.04 with kernel 2.6.24
My boot device is a CF-card connected to the 1st (and only) PATA port. On the
1st SATA port I've attached a hdd which is working fine.
Now I've tried to connect another hdd to the 2nd SATA port ... without success.
I got the following error in dmesg : ata1.01: failed to set xfermode
(err_mask=0x1)
I switched the two hdd and same error same SATA port.
I will try to apply the patch mentioned here above.

[Bug 1922603] Re: nvidia-cuda-toolkit not matching nvidia-driver-460

2021-04-05 Thread Lau
Using a target architecture only known to CUDA >= 11 does not work (e.g.
`compute_86`, the error is that the architecture is not known). However,
selecting a target architecture known to CUDA >= 10 appears to work
(compiles, and compiled code working).

Since the NVIDIA drivers are provided updated deb packages, it would
seem good to also update the deb packages for `nvidia-cuda-toolkit`.

[Bug 1888033] [NEW] Check error with 20.04-desktop ISO

2020-07-17 Thread Lau
Public bug reported:

When using the ISO for Ubuntu 20.04 Desktop from bootable USB, the following
message appears briefly at the end of the media check during boot.

```
Check finished: errors found in 1 files! You might encounter errors.
```

I checked the SHA256SUM (from here -
https://releases.ubuntu.com/20.04/SHA256SUMS) for ISO, I tried creating
the bootable USB with 3 different thumbdrives (2 different brands), and
used either the Startup Disk Creator or Disks but the error does not go
away.

The file `md5sum.txt` in the ISO contains the expected MD5 checksums
every file so I checked all of them.

The file `./boot/grub/efi.img` in the ISO is the one file with a
mismatching MD5 sum.

This means that either the `md5sum.txt` in the ISO is incorrect, or that
file was tempered with before making it to the ISO.

[Bug 1888033] Re: Check error with 20.04-desktop ISO

2020-07-18 Thread Lau
There was follow-up in the question (I first created this as a question):
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/691933

The file efi.img in the USB appears to be modified at boot time (Kai
suggests that it is modified by the BIOS), which leads to a failed check
(different checksum than expected for that file).

[Bug 1888033] Re: Check error with 20.04-desktop ISO

2020-09-06 Thread Lau
As explained in the thread, the issue is not with the files in the
original iso but with the fact that the efi.img is modified during the
boot process, making the subsequent checksum fail.

This seems marked as invalid without looking at the issue.

[Bug 1888033] Re: Check error with 20.04-desktop ISO

2020-09-06 Thread Lau
Initially this was a question
(https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/691933) but I
invalidated it when this was reproduced by someone else and it seemed
like a real bug.

The checksum test were already reported there, but we also came to the
conclusion that it is modified during the boot process.

[Bug 41301] Re: Mouse clicks stop working sporadically

2008-12-05 Thread Tessa Lau
I have started seeing this problem since upgrading from Hardy to Ibex.
The cursor moves around on screen, but clicks are not recognized and the
focus does not follow the cursor as it should. It happens several times
a day for me. Switching to a text console does not help; only killing
the X server fixes it.

I am also using a dual monitor setup with Xinerama, and one screen
rotated 90 degrees. (Can't use Twinview because it won't let you rotate
only one of two screens). I have an NVidia Quadro FX 3500. I had the
same hardware with Hardy, but it didn't have this problem.

[Bug 291373] Re: vim: hang after ^Z / fg

2008-12-08 Thread Tessa Lau
I've seen this problem since upgrading from hardy to intrepid. There
doesn't seem to be any specific trigger. If I repeat the following
actions several times, I can trigger the bug after a few iterations:

1. open a gnome-terminal
2. run 'vim'
3. type ^Z to background it
4. run 'ls'
5. type 'fg' to bring vim back

The terminal outputs:
[1] + continued vim myfile.txt

but the vim screen does not refresh itself. I noticed that I can type
^C when it's wedged like that and the display will come back.

I am using the same vim configuration I had in hardy, and didn't see the
problem at all until the upgrade. Another note is that I usually run
vim inside of screen, but I have seen the problem outside of screen as
well.

[Bug 296167] Re: X.org will stop responding to mouse clicks on Ibex with Xinerama. Occurs frequently, Fatal Error.

2008-12-09 Thread Tessa Lau
Me too. Ubuntu 8.10, Nvidia 177, Xinerama. Like JP, I prefer to have
one of my displays rotated CW 90 degrees.

I switched to Twinview yesterday and haven't seen the problem since
switching. Before that I was having to restart my X server every 1-2
hours because of this bug.

I can reliably trigger the problem by using x11vnc or vino to share my
Xinerama desktop with another computer. After exiting the vnc viewer on
the other computer, the mouse would move but no clicks would register.
The workaround is to put the mouse cursor at the farthest right edge of
the virtual desktop before exiting the vnc client. If you do this, you
can usually avoid triggering the bug.

There's a possibly-relevant bug which I thought was due to vnc but is
actually probably due to this Xinerama bug: when operating my Xinerama
desktop remotely using a vnc client, I could not click anywhere on my
first display (the rotated one). Only clicks in the second screen would
register. I could move the mouse cursor to the first screen, but I
could not interact with anything on that display.

[Bug 159153] Re: Evolution slow to display window for composing new message/reply.

2008-11-20 Thread Tessa Lau
I am seeing this now with Evolution 2.24.1-0ubuntu2 on Ubuntu Ibex.
Replying to a message or composing a new message causes a delay of about
2 minutes before the compose window pops up. During that time, the
entire application is frozen and does not repaint. CPU usage is
minimal.

Backtrace is attached.

I suspect this might be related to some kind of network problem. I
first started seeing this problem after upgrading from hardy to ibex. I
believe the cause was related to network-manager reporting that the
system was offline; see bug
https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-
manager/+bug/82335. Uninstalling network-manager made most of the
problems (including this Evolution bug) go away. However, after a dist-
upgrade yesterday, I suddenly started seeing this problem again, making
Evolution fairly unusable.

[Bug 218230] Re: gtk file dialog blocks on trackerd (via dbus) for 25s for users with NFS homedirs

2008-11-20 Thread Tessa Lau
I'm seeing the same problem. I first observed the symptoms in
Evolution, where replying or composing a new message took 2+ minutes
before the compose window appeared. (See my previous comment and
stacktrace at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/159153). I
traced the problem to the tracker_get_version call in
libtrackerclient.so, which led me to this bug report. I can reproduce
the problem with the filechooser as described above too.

My home directory is local (no NFS whatsoever).

Removing the ~/.cache/tracker directory did not help, but uninstalling
libtrackerclient0 and all its dependencies did work.

Here's a more complete backtrace with the debug versions of libdbus and

[Bug 281991] [NEW] Python: importing pytz triggers warning

2008-10-11 Thread Tessa Lau
Public bug reported:

This problem occurs on a fresh update of Ibex. It did not occur in

Importing the pytz module after the vobject module triggers the
following warning:

>>> import vobject, pytz
/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/pytz/__init__.py:29: UserWarning: Module
dateutil was already imported from

/var/lib/python-support/python2.5 is being added to sys.path

Importing the modules in the opposite order does not print a warning.
Perhaps there is a problem in the pytz module that it does not check for
modules that have already been imported?

[Bug 283456] [NEW] x11vnc doesn't send input to one of two heads in dual-head setup

2008-10-14 Thread Tessa Lau
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: x11vnc

I'm using x11vnc to connected to a dual-headed Xinerama display.
Although the mouse can move across both heads in the VNC session, when
the mouse is on the left head, no input events are directed to the
windows on that head. I can't click on windows to move them around.
Input focus is not directed to the windows on that head, so I can't type
into those windows. Basically I can't interact with any windows on that
head at all. Meanwhile, windows on the second head can be interacted
with normally.

[Bug 280248] [NEW] madwifi/ath_pci does not connect to wpa network on boot

2008-10-08 Thread Tessa Lau
Public bug reported:

I have a home network with WPA and broadcast SSID enabled. I want my
Ubuntu Hardy machine to connect to this network automatically on boot.
I declared the following in /etc/network/interfaces:

auto ath0
iface ath0 inet static
mtu 1400
address 192.168.0.3
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.254
wpa-driver madwifi
wpa-ssid boboli
wpa-key-mgmt WPA-PSK
wpa-psk ""

The machine is supposed to come up with a static IP on the "boboli"
network. However, right after boot, wpa_supplicant is running, but my
wireless card is associated with an open network in the neighborhood and
is not connected to my preferred SSID.

Using wpa_cli I get:
% sudo wpa_cli
> status
wpa_state=INACTIVE
ip_address=192.168.0.3

I have to bring the interface down, remove the ath_pci module, and bring
everything back up in order to connect to the network. After running
these commands I am back on the correct network:

% sudo ifdown ath0
% sudo modprobe -r ath_pci
% sudo modprobe ath_pci
% sudo ifup ath0

Removing and reinserting the ath_pci module is necessary due to a
different bug, reported elsewhere. (It fails to associate all but the
first time it is used after the module has been loaded.)

The problem I am reporting here is that the network connection should
work right after boot; I should not have to restart networking in order
to get it to work on boot.

[Bug 279915] [NEW] Cannot specify offset of second head in dual-head configuration

Public bug reported:

I have two monitors connected to an Nvidia Quadro FX 3500 using the

The left monitor is rotated 90 degrees. Because TwinView does not
support rotating only a single monitor, I am using Xinerama to configure
the screens.

Under Hardy I used to be able to tell X that the right monitor is
located at an offset in the Y axis, so that the cursor would not "jump"
when moving from one monitor to the other. However, since the upgrade
to Ibex overwrote my old xorg.conf configuration file, I cannot
reproduce this setup on Ibex. I have tried specifying the absolute
position of the right monitor, but everything I tried either has (a) no
effect, (b) limits the mouse to only one screen, or (c) causes X to send
an invalid video signal to my monitors.

[Bug 296167] Re: X.org will stop responding to mouse clicks on Ibex with Xinerama. Occurs frequently, Fatal Error.

2009-01-20 Thread Tessa Lau
Geekfreak's fix makes me wonder if the cause is related to cursor
position.

One of the common triggers mentioned by folks on this thread is virtual
machines or virtual desktop software such as vnc, synergy, and vmware.
Those often work by moving the mouse pointer offscreen (for example,
when you use synergy to control a remote desktop, the pointer is hidden
on the local desktop by moving it to a point outside of view).

Can anyone reliably trigger the bug by using a similar xautomation
command to move the pointer to a location offscreen?

[Bug 264140] [NEW] Epiphany sometimes stops loading web pages

2008-09-02 Thread Tessa Lau
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: epiphany-browser

After having Epiphany open for a few days, it will eventually stop
loading web pages. Any attempt to load a web page results in the
browser just reporting "Loading..." indefinitely. It doesn't matter if
it's refreshing a current page, clicking on a link to navigate to a new
page, or typing a URL into the location bar.

After it gets into this state, no new pages can be loaded. If I close
down all epiphany windows and reopen epiphany using the Ubuntu
applications menu, the new window that comes up still has this problem.
It's only after I do a "killall epiphany-browser" and a restart that I
am able to load web pages again.

While in this state, an strace of the epiphany-browser process shows the
following loop:

poll([{fd=4, events=POLLIN}, {fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=8,
events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=11, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=12,

[Bug 316077] Re: usb creator missing python-gnome2 dependency

2009-08-11 Thread Ben Lau
I can confirm that the bug can be resolved by set the default python
version from 2.5 to 2.6. However , there has applications that are not
compatible with python 2.6 (e.g Google App Engine SDK). I think it need
to rebuild the usb-creator package for python 2.5

[Bug 411476] Re: Firefox 3.5 should not use the ubuntu logout noises as default sounds

2009-08-19 Thread Tessa Lau
Is there any way to silence Firefox, other than muting my speaker? I
went through all the preferences and didn't see any way to turn off
sounds, much less configure them.

[Bug 157267] Firefox script broken if not invoked as /usr/bin/firefox

2007-10-25 Thread Tessa Lau
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

I had /usr/X11R6/bin in my PATH ahead of /usr/bin. When I ran Firefox
from the command line, it automatically chose to run
/usr/X11R6/bin/firefox. This results in an error:

cd: 129: can't cd to ../lib/firefox
/usr/X11R6/bin/firefox: 184: /usr/X11R6/bin/run-mozilla.sh: not found

If I invoke firefox as /usr/bin/firefox, it works correctly. The shell
script should not be dependent on what path was used to invoke it.

[Bug 157464] Evolution folder selector sometimes doesn't let you move a message to a folder

2007-10-26 Thread Tessa Lau
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

About 5% of the time when I try to refile a message in Evolution from my
INBOX to a different folder, I am unable to select a destination folder
from the pop-up "Select folder" dialog. To reproduce:

* Select a message in the INBOX
* Press ctrl-shift-v to bring up the "Select folder" dialog
* Note that the INBOX folder is currently selected
* Try clicking on the destination folder

Both the INBOX and the destination folder are highlighted in blue (see
screenshot at http://tlau.org/evo-refile-bug.png), but the Move button
is grayed out. No matter which folder I click on, the Move button stays
disabled.

Usually cancelling the Move operation (dismissing the Select Folder
dialog) and retrying the Move operation will result in a successful
move. Occasionally it will happen twice in a row.

It's difficult to reproduce this problem. I usually notice it when I
return to Evolution after having been working on other things for a
while. I will try to pay more attention to see under what conditions it
happens in the future. I'd like to know if anyone else has experienced
this problem and if you have any more details on it.
