[Bug 299285] [NEW] Middle click in tab bar scrolls tabs

2008-11-17 Thread Brad
Public bug reported:

Using Firefox 3 on Ubuntu 8.10, I've been experiencing a bug with the tab bar
(and history window) when middle-clicking items. Instead of closing the tab (or
in the history's case, opening the URL in a new tab) it scrolls down one, or
sometimes more, tabs and then closes/opens that.
I've used Firefox 3 with this mouse on other operating systems (Windows, and
many past distro's of Ubuntu) and this is my first time experiencing this
problem.

+
+ UPDATE:
+ I've figured out where the problem lies, but I don't have a solution yet. It
may be a Gnome issue, or it could be a Firefox issue. At any rate, I notice (in
Firefox) middle click scrolls horizontally. This would explain why
middle-clicking in the tab bar causes it to switch tabs.

Re: [Bug 369074] Re: "Set As Background" pop-up doesn't work

2009-05-31 Thread brad
Thanks.

Ubuntu 8.04 -- Gnome

Place cursor over image, right-click, select:"Set as Desktop
Background". Pop-up opens showing image of monitor, option to select
color, stretch image, tile,or center. Regardless of selection, clicking
on "Set As Background" has no effect. - Seems not to be linked to
Desktop-manager, or whatever app is in control of the desktop background
image.

Re: [Bug 282901] Re: Firefox

2008-10-16 Thread brad
Hello Jonathan

Thanks for the reply.
I realize Konqueror is a KDE dependent-project. I use it on my Gnome
desktop now anyway. I've been using Ubuntu since Feisty Fawn, (my
desktop is actually still Feisty because Feisty runs smoother than the
newer releases (on my older hardware), though I'll probably switch to
Hardy soon since most of the bugs have been worked out and it's looking
very solid).
I probably shouldn't gripe about Firefox, since it's been a very
dependable browser, but...
To be honest, when I use Firefox now, I feel as if I'm sitting watching
commercials. I also realize that this is a totally unfounded emotion,
but nevertheless, there it is.( I liken it to the comparison between
Google and Yahoo, - both are ad driven services, but Google disguises
this fact more effectively) So when Firefox started acting weirdly
(considering how solid it's been), I decided I'd had enough.
I also use Debian Etch, which has IceWeasel instead of Firefox, and
though they're one and the same, IceWeasel, like Google disguises it's
commercial roots more effectively.
Anyways, I'm ranting. I was really only interested in putting forward
the idea that the Gnome desktop could a Konqueror-like browser whose
only purpose it is to serve Gnome.

Thanks -- Brad
PS - I'll post this to the more appropriate Ubuntu
features/brainstorming wiki. In the meantime, thanks for a great OS.

[Bug 209499] Re: Default window size too large, obscured under top panel

2008-10-13 Thread brad
I can confirm this bug on an IBM Thinkpad X31 >> Intrepid Ibex Beta >>
Firefox 3.0.3

I've successfully installed and used all versions of Ubuntu from 6.06
onward on this thinkpad without any major problems.

This problem with Firefox hiding under the top-panel is new, and occurs with a
brand new install upon opening Firefox for the first time.
Seems to be remedied by opening panel preferences >> adding panel-hide buttons
>> hiding top panel >>adjusting firefox window size by grabbing the bottom
corner >> then un-hiding top-panel.

This might not be issue if the top-panel wasn't "expanded" by default.

[Bug 282901] [NEW] Firefox

2008-10-13 Thread brad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Half the bug reports are for problems with Firefox.

It's a great, 'holy' open-source project and all, but how about making
something else the default internet browser - maybe something like Konqueror,
(which provides additional functionality), except for Gnome, (Gonqueror?).
Then maybe we'd start seeing some plug-in development for something other than
Mozilla-Firefox which has a trillion plug-ins that can only be used for
Firefox.
Is this Ubuntu development, or Firefox development?

[Bug 283204] Re: [Ubuntu 8.10] Pulseaudio update 0.9.12 - 0.9.13 Caused audio problems with Flash plugin & VLC (also including mozilla plugin)

2008-10-14 Thread brad
After upgrading, flash sound only works when no other sound is playing.
The npviewer.bin is not picked up by pulseaudio in etiher case, so I
assume it's just using alsa. Here is the output in terminal without
sound playing:

E: shm.c: Invalid shared memory segment size

And with sound playing:

E: shm.c: Invalid shared memory segment size
E: shm.c: Invalid shared memory segment size
ALSA lib ../../../src/pcm/pcm_dmix.c:1008:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open
slave
ALSA lib ../../../src/pcm/pcm_dmix.c:1008:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open
slave

One thing that I notice that is different between 0.9.10 and
0.9.12-0.9.13 is that system sound is picked up in the pulseaudio
applet, even if I turn it off in Sound Preferences, so maybe this has
something to do with libcanberra.

[Bug 289354] [NEW] Intrepid Ibex RC doesn't remember wireless preference

2008-10-25 Thread brad
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 8.10 rc (as of Oct 24)
IBM Thinkpad X31

Intrepid Ibex RC is not remembering wireless preference on restart.

It automatically searches for wireless network, but doesn't remember
which network I was using at shutdown, (which I believe is one of the
preferences it's supposed to remember).

On startup, it searches for wireless signal, then presents a dialog box
displaying a network (though not the last one used), and asking for
password (and this also has a bug in it in that the password field is
pre-populated, and wont clear. ie. when the dialog box opens, the drop-
down options shows WAP or personal or whatever, and the text-field for
the password is full of dots which wont clear through back-spacing, at
least not for the first 5 seconds. Placing the cursor at the end of
line, then hitting backspace returns the cursor to the beginning of the
line, leaving the pre-populated text-field intact instead of clearing
the field).

I bypass the problem by closing the pop-up dialog, clicking on the
network icon in the top panel, and selecting the appropriate network.
All is ok after that.

In summary, I believe the ia32-libs since version 2.2ubuntu11 have been
missing the libgnutls26 library files. Add this to the package and
things should work again.

[Bug 277175] [NEW] ia32-libs is missing libgnutls26

2008-10-02 Thread brad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ia32-libs

Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid, AMD64.

I outlined the reason for needing to add this package to ia32-libs here:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin-
nonfree/+bug/257403/comments/49

Since version 2.2ubuntu11, the library file /lib32/libnss_ldap.so.2 has
needed libgnutls.so.26 instead of libgnutls.so.13. When libgnutls26 is
installed with getlibs, flash rc2 works again. Previously I had to
downgrade to version 2.2ubuntu11 of ia32-libs to get flash working,
which installed an older version of libnss_ldap.so.2 that linked to
libgnutls.so.13 instead of libgnutls.so.26.

Regardless of the flash issue, the current ia32-libs is broken because
it is missing a file that an important library is trying to link to:

> ldd /lib32/libnss_ldap-2.8.90.so
 linux-gate.so.1 => (0xf7f1c000)
 libldap_r-2.4.so.2 => /usr/lib32/libldap_r-2.4.so.2 (0xf7e9e000)

[Bug 274988] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in miValidateTree

2008-10-02 Thread brad
When I run without an xorg.conf, it asks to reconfigure the graphics.
After restarting, gnome-system-monitor doesn't crash x anymore, but is
using the failsafe graphics, i.e. framebuffer.

When I remove the backingstore option from xorg.conf, X doesn't crash
anymore when opening gnome-system-monitor. Should backingstore work for
my card, or should I just leave this alone?

[Bug 274988] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in miValidateTree

2008-10-09 Thread brad
I added it manually. Just trying to squeeze all the performance I could
out of the open-source drivers until the proprietary drivers start
working with xserver 1.5.

A few threads I read mentioned that backingstore shouldn't be used with
X.org 7.4. I can't find any official documentation of this, but for now
I'm fine with not using it.

[Bug 272841] [NEW] Login Screen times out Feisty Fawn

2008-09-21 Thread brad
Public bug reported:

Login window times out.

When booting, if I don't sign in within a limited time period, the login window
times out. Nothing major, just a small thing.
After a certain amount of time has passed at login, ie. the LCD goes to sleep,
when I enter my user name, the loader responds with the message: "Wrong
user-name or password", and I have to re-enter user-name and password.
Seems to me the window should return a message saying something like: Login
timed out, please re-enter user-name and password. Little things like this can
make all the difference in customer confidence. I haven't tested in Hardy
Heron to see if the issue is repeatable.

[Bug 257403] Re: [Intrepid] FFe request for Flash 10 RC2 (10.0.12.10)

2008-09-24 Thread brad
I believe this is a regression in ia32-libs. When I downgrade to
2.2ubuntu11 (current is 2.2ubuntu13) and install the 4 missing libraries
with getlibs, everything works great. These 4 libraries were added in
2.2ubuntu12, which was quickly replaced by the current version, so I
don't understand why it doesn't work.

Re: [Bug 272841] Re: Login Screen times out Feisty Fawn

2008-09-24 Thread brad
Hello -- I meant that I do nothing at all. Sometimes I'll hit the
start button on my computer(s), then do something else while it goes
through the boot cycle. If I leave it for too long, (probably the
default screen-sleep/suspend/hibernate setting 5-10min), then come back
to it, wake up the screen by moving the mouse or entering a space on the
space-bar, and enter my user-name, I get the results described in my
report.
It's not really a problem. It's just not very flattering to the OS.
Thanks.

[Bug 272841] Re: Login Screen times out Feisty Fawn

2008-09-24 Thread brad
I meant doing nothing other than turning the computer on and walking away while
it goes through it's boot cycle. (about 1.5min on my thinkpad and p4 desktop ),
then coming back to it after 5 or more minutes have elapsed, (this probably has
something to do with the default screensaver function). Because it only happens
if I wait long enough for the LCD to go to sleep.
Again, like I said, it's not really a problem, it's just not all that
flattering to the OS.

[Bug 241168] [NEW] No sound on Realtek '97 on-board sound card

2008-06-18 Thread Brad
Public bug reported:

I recently installed Ubuntu 8.04 and I get no sound. I've previously
had Fedora Core 4 and 5 with sound working. I tried the usual suspects
like chmod 666 /dev/dsp, and unmuting all channels in alsamixer to no
avail. Attached is my log from the requested info on troublshooting
sound. All my audio testing was playing a CD in Rhythmbox, and also the
sound preferences gui in System>Preferences>Sound. I even tried playing
the cd as root.

Thanks in advance, and let me know if more information could be helpful!

I found this URL which helped correct the problem for me:

However in step 6, I did the opposite:

Deselect Use this proxy server for all protocols.

* If it's not selected, leave it as is. ( I selected it and it

[Bug 209207] Re: Unsupported value in gconf by default in Hardy

2008-06-08 Thread brad
I found the fix for this one.

1. System > Preferences > Advanced Desktop Effects Settings.
2. Scroll down and open "Scale" under the Window Management section.
3. Go to the Bindings Tab and open the first "Initiate Window Picker"
configuration.
4. Choose a corner. This allows you to zoom out and see all your windows to
choose one.
5. That's it, you now have a valid value for initiate_edge.

If you don't have the first step available, install the package
compizconfig-settings-manager.

Seems like the Scale plugin needs to be fixed, because when it's enabled
it's being assigned an unusable value.

What if I have a swap file instead of a swap partition? Should I just

[Bug 292450] Re: Broadcom STA/wl driver causes random kernel panics

2009-01-23 Thread brad
I'd like to echo the previous comment. The driver works until I try to
connect to my schools wireless, which uses WPA2 TTLS with secondary PAP
security. It kernel panics within seconds of trying to connect.

Is there a Broadcom bug site we could be submitting this information to?
I know for a fact this issue still exists in Jaunty and Intrepid.

2008-12-28 Thread brad
Updated to the new wl driver, still have the same issue. I get the
message:

TKIP: RX tkey->key_idx=2 frame keyidx=1 priv=88013386cb40

several hundred times, then a kernel panic with the blinking caps lock.
Switching back to b43-fwcutter for now.

I'm getting these panics too. Here is a message that is repeated in my
kern.log file hundreds of times:

TKIP: RX tkey->key_idx=2 frame keyidx=1 priv=88013386cb40

When I switch to the b43 driver this message goes away, as well as the

[Bug 350436] [NEW] Kernel panic in gutsy 8.10 on HP 530j

2009-03-28 Thread Brad
Public bug reported:

Shortly after booting the 8.10 live cd, I get a panic and the leds on
the keyboard blink. I was able to try to boot a few times, and managed
to drop to a text prompt before it crashes, and this is a snippet, the
only amount I could capture. Hopefully this can be useful for figuring
out what is wrong... For what it is worth, 9.04 live cd also panics, not
sure if it is panicing for the same reason... Also, no arguments seem to
help. Whether I use noapic, noacpi, pci=noacpi, nosmp, etc. Also, for
what it is worth, I am able to boot and install 8.04 on here. It seems
to run without issue. I am using it right now to write this bug report.

[Bug 350436] Re: acx wireless kernel panic in gutsy 8.10

2009-04-11 Thread Brad
Paul,
Is there anyway to unload this module from the bootloader or something? I would
love to at least, temporarily disable the driver so the livecd won't crash, so
I can manage to install a newer version of Ubuntu, like 8.10 or 9.04.

[Bug 68927] Re: Edgy: Suspend to RAM doesn't resume on Toshiba Tecra M3

2006-11-08 Thread Brad
I see these exact same errors in the messages file. Basically, the
resume code doesn't reset the SATA hardware, so we are getting these
device errors when reading or writing to the HD.

I don't think that it's a dup of
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.17/+bug/63840
but hay be related.

Mine suspends completely, but does not resume.

[Bug 157914] programs self-launching

2007-10-27 Thread brad
Public bug reported:

Apps are self-aunching (unrequested),
While I'm working in various applications, several programs will automatically
launch themselves. Mostly: a new Firefox window opens, Eudora opens, Rythmbox
opens. This occurs at random times with no apparent link to any other program,
( ie. usually while net-browsing in Firefox, or while working in Screem.

Pentium 4, latest ubuntu release, updates current and installed.
This problem also occurred with the older 7.0.4 version of Ubuntu installed on
this system.

[Bug 151956] Re: Gutsy RC1 LiveCD can't find flashplugin-nonfree when using install plugin on firefox

2007-10-14 Thread Brad
1) we're *not* sticking flashplugin-nonfree on the cd. Just. No.
Hmm, I don't really care if it is on the cd so much as I care that it installs
as it did with feisty while using the livecd. If it wasn't on the livecd for
feisty, then I don't really think it should be for gutsy either...

2) It's not in universe. it has never been in universe. it never *will* be in
universe.
Ok, well that is fine, I guess all that really says is that feisty itself was
never pulling it from universe either. That really isn't a big problem for
me... Probably just a mistake by the previous commenter.

3) it's in multiverse, and we don't enable that by default (afaik).
Well, from the times I remember booting from the livecd with feisty, I don't
recall multiverse ever being enabled in the sources.list. So I think you are
probably right about that, but I do know the plugin still installed. So whether
that means that clicking install plugin in firefox was somehow smart enough to
pull the plugin from multiverse without it actually being enabled in the
sources file and updated, I am not sure. What I am sure of is that whatever it
was doing in feisty, it no longer is doing in gutsy, sadly...

3.5) No, apparently we *do* add multiverse by default now.
As I think I heard you say in the channel, that is probably true after an
installation. And it did appear as though once I manually added the multiverse
line in sources.list and updated that it finally could find the plugin, but
what perplexes me is why the behavior has changed from feisty to gutsy. From
the perspective of anyone used to being able to this behavior, gutsy will now
seem like a downgrade. It is arguable whether anyone should be doing this on a
livecd at all, but then again this seems like exactly the kind of thing a
livecd SHOULD be allowing people to do. Especially for scenarios where people
want to test Ubuntu and ensure that everything they need or want to do will
work, BEFORE they install. Hopefully someone who knows more about what feisty
was doing, and what changed in gutsy can look at this and get this resolved. I
would also love if anyone else who still has a feisty cd, if they could boot
and replicate the installation of the flash plugin and confirm for me that it
really IS installing on feisty without enabling multiverse, because I am pretty
sure it was. Regardless of whether it should have been doing that or not, the
process was simpler and smoother in feisty especially to people new to Ubuntu.

[Bug 151956] Gutsy RC1 LiveCD can't find flashplugin-nonfree when using install plugin on firefox

2007-10-12 Thread Brad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

I am not sure if this is related to bug #139138, but the behavior I see
is sorta similar, other than it isn't actually installing the flash
plugin even after restarting firefox. Firefox shows me two options,
Gnash and the Adobe flash plugin. When I select it, it pops up a dialog
with a red x saying Can not find 'flashplugin-nonfree'. After closing
the dialog, it shows a dialog saying it successfully installed, but when
trying to view flash content it clearly isn't installed. Also restarting
firefox doesn't have any effect, it simply asks again to install
plugins.

[Bug 164804] Re: Gnome Login Error

2008-02-07 Thread Brad
Gutsy 7.10 - vanilla
I am experiencing the same problem, the differences being that I only receive
the following errors:

The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_Panel_TrashApplet"
The panel encountered a problem while loading "OAFIID:GNOME_MixerApplet".

Usually this only happens when I log out, and log back into my account.
I also experience a system slowdown, although my root password still works!
After a complete restart, the errors usually don't occur.
Today was the first day I received the same set of errors after a full restart.

In addition Nautilus does not work, and my desktop wallpaper, and
occasionally the panels themselves, fail to load.

However, Thunar does work, all be it slowly.

[Bug 33673] Re: Not obvious when logout is stalled by window on another virtual desktop

2008-02-01 Thread brad
I'd like to confirm this bug.
If gedit is running, but is underneath another running application, (in my
particular case it was Evolution), and logout is initiated, (shut down), and
the gedit document hasn't been saved, the dialog box, to save or discard, opens
underneath the currently running application, causing the system-shutdown to
stall, with no way to get at the dialog box, (the curser moves, but
(close)application wont respond. Maybe something like an "always on top" could
be added to gedit's dialog pop-ups to make sure they can jump to the uppermost
window?

My system is a Pentium4, Ubuntu 7.0.4 (all current updates). No
modifications.

[Bug 145331] Re: screem just shuts with no message

2007-12-12 Thread brad
hello -- I have the same problem --- Screem just shuts down for no apparent
reason.
I notice you say it happens when you try to work on css or php files, and I've
noticed the same thing.
Got a site folder open, various site pages open , but when I try to open and
work on the corresponding css file, screem shuts down. And when I restart, it
recognizes all the html files and restarts with them open, but drops the css
file.
I had experienced this problem once before, and reinstalled screem which
seemed to cure the problem, but now I'm starting to think it might have
something to do with having more than one site on the go.
i.e. it doesn't seem to do this if I've only got one official site, but if I
have more than one site, it seems do this.
i'd been running and working in screem for several weeks without this problem,
but yesterday i needed a temporary site, started one, and now it's doing it
again. Will try deleting my temporary site to see if this will cure the
problem.

Hello --- Re- deleting temp site. no effect, sorry.
It might be a conflict with one of the upgrades. Sorry, I'll keep your address
for a while... if I find a solution, I'll forward the info.
(I realize it's a bit of a pain, but so-far, the only solution is to save all
your files to an external memory, and install a fresh copy of Ubuntu. - Which
is what leads me to think it's one of the upgrades causing the conflict. There
is a way to create a system recovery on your hard-disk, so when an upgrade
causes a conflict you can revert to pre-upgrade. When I find the back-up
solution, I'll forward it.)

[Bug 213053] [NEW] Totem is 'uninterruptible'

2008-04-06 Thread brad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

I was editing movies and repeatedly watching the outputs with Totem.
After a while I checked system monitor and saw that there was a stray
totem process running, and it's status was "uninterruptible". It was
using less than 200KB of memory but was at 60% CPU usage continuously. I
could not kill it or stop it. When I went to restart my system it took
over a minute to leave the desktop, and was never able to completely
shut down. I had to manually restart. :(

This only happened once, and I have no clue what caused it to happen. I
have never had a problem like this before.

[Bug 68927] Edgy: Suspend to RAM doesn't resume on Toshiba Tecra M3

2006-10-28 Thread Brad
Public bug reported:

I've done a fresh install of Edgy (final build) on my Toshiba Tecra M3.
The system does not resume from Suspend to Ram. It appears to resume
from Hibernate the couple of times that I tried.

Very occasionally it will show me the lock screen, but afterwards I
cannot use anything that tries to use the disk.

This is a SATA system. I've seen some rumblings about suspend and SATA,
but it looks like they were fixed in previous kernel versions.

I'm almost certain that the resume problem is SATA related, but don't
know where to begin to collect data.

[Bug 92570] Re: nm-applet dissapears after connecting to vpn

2007-03-30 Thread Brad
Something very similar happens if you input the user password, but leave
the group password blank.

In my case, I entered my user password, and accidentally hit enter
instead of tab, and the NM Applet disappears just like above.

I think that the above might be crashing for a similar reason as he
doesn't input a username field, only the group password.

[Bug 94935] Re: Cancel installation asks Yes/No question but gives Cancel/Quit options

2007-03-23 Thread Brad
Okay I accept that this conforms to the GNOME HIG.

A better suggestion for the "Quit" button may be "Abort Installation" or
"Abort" as the dialogue is explicitly asking if the user wishes to
abort, or maybe rephrase the question to something like "Do you really
want to quit the installation now?".

Re: [Bug 75170] Re: Dapper installer keeps crashing

2006-12-10 Thread Brad
Hello,
Thanks for the response! The memory was one of the first things that I
checked, and it seems normal.
In answer to your question, yes, the Dapper installer was crashing in the
same spot each time. However, I don't think it was the password, I belive it
was the user name which happened to be
"operator". I seem to remember there is an "operator" install option?
Could that have triggered a interupt during the setup/install?

Once I changed the user name to something other than "operator" I had
no problems.
Just to make sure, I went through the process two more times, one with
"operator" user
name, another time
without. The installer crashed again during the "operator" username install.

Like I said, once I changed the name, I was able to install Dapper. In
fact, I'm looking forward to setting
everything up when I get home from work. Hope this helps, and I hope I
didn't waste anyones time.
Thank you for your time, effort and response.
Sincerely,
Brad

[Bug 66963] Re: pci_set_power_state errors in tty0 console

2007-02-06 Thread Brad
Very nice find.. that has to be our problem!

Quote:
"Hmm.. 3c59x.c seems to do pci_set_power_state() without checking if it is
supported; and it seems it can do it when userland asks it to.
You may want to try killing daemons one-by-one to see which one triggers that.
Perhaps pci should not complain when it is asked to do transitions on
non-power-managable hardware?"

They have a patch which has been approved for openSUSE.
