[Bug 255555] [NEW] Cannot switch to an existing guest session

2008-08-06 Thread alexrudd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm-guest-session

I was reading the Blueprint for a guest account and then realized I
could check it out through the fast user switch applet. Everything
worked and I could get back to my main account. However, I couldn't get
back to the Guest session afterwards. It brought me to the unlock
screen and asked me for a password, which I obviously couldn't provide.

[Bug 255526] Re: gvfsd-sftp crashed with signal 5 in g_malloc()

2008-08-09 Thread alexrudd
I know it's difficult to triage bugs with little information, but what
exactly am I supposed to do here? Running valgrind on a system daemon
isn't the most obvious of tasks.

For now, I've run "G_SLICE=always-malloc G_DEBUG=gc-friendly valgrind
-v --tool=memcheck --leak-check=full --num-callers=40 --log-
file=valgrind.log /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd-sftp --spawner :1.12
/org/gtk/gvfs/exec_spaw/9", mounted my home directory as a sftp://
folder in Nautilus, and am copying files over themselves.

Will this even do anything?

[Bug 256707] [NEW] gnome-session crashes with nvidia driver enabled

2008-08-10 Thread alexrudd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

Anytime I try to use the latest (beta) nvidia driver, I cannot login.

The driver (my card is a GeForce Go 7400, so I use nvidia-glx-177) loads
fine since I can see the nvidia splash screen. The GDM greeter works
fine also, but as soon as I log in X crashes. KDE4 crashes too, but I
figured I would report the bug against GNOME.

[Bug 226471] Re: untitled popup window

2008-08-11 Thread alexrudd
I just started getting this in the latest Intrepid as of a few days ago.

It seems to be related to flash. A window or tab with Flash content
will open a popup the same size as the content. It will initially show
the content, but it never gets repainted and eventually turns gray.
Closing it instantly closes FX.

something about "Error resolving 0.channel01.facebook.com"? The author
has fixed that crash and it now works for me. He hasn't released the
fix yet, but I just compiled it from source.

[Bug 152756] Re: stale files in /var/lib/initramfs-tools after removing kernel

2008-07-13 Thread alexrudd
I ran into this problem too while upgrading today on hardy-proposed. I
upgrade on a regular basis (ie. several times a week), so I'm not sure
why it only cropped up now.

I remember try to compile a custom kernel once, but never got far and
don't remember what tool I used. It was a while ago, definitely before
hardy.

The previously mentioned suggestion of removing the stale file in
/var/lib/initramfs-tools worked perfectly.

[Bug 247718] Re: package fontconfig-config 2.6.0-2ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade:

2008-07-15 Thread alexrudd
I encountered a similar problem with trying to upgrade fontconfig-config
(Hardy-proposed -> Intrepid alpha 1)

In the terminal I used to launch update-manager (with gksu) is the following:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gksu "update-manager -d"
Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/53-monospace-lcd-filter.conf", line 17:
invalid constant used : lcdfilterlegacy
Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/53-monospace-lcd-filter.conf", line 17:

invalid constant used : lcdfilterlegacy
Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/53-monospace-lcd-filter.conf", line 17:
invalid constant used : lcdfilterlegacy

Several apport dialogs came up, for fontconfig as well as others such as
update-manager. Each of them went through the data-collection and
upload steps, but no Firefox window opened. Eventually update-manager
crashed with a rather serious warning. Something along the lines of
"The upgrade failed, and ends now. Your system may be broken. Run dpkg
--configure -a."

I'm currently running dpkg --configure -a, which is apparently making
some progress with installing further, but still having problems.

[Bug 254840] Re: [intrepid] mouse and keyboard stop working under gdm and gnome

2008-08-05 Thread alexrudd
I *think* I have everything upgraded successfully (dist-upgrade failed
midway, but that's another issue). The new automatic setup does not
work at all. The only way I can get my keyboard and USB mouse to work
is by personally recreating Xorg.conf to explicitly define a keyboard
and mouse. The relevant sections of my xorg.conf look identical to
Alberto Milone's example.

Is there some way to check whether input-hotplug is active or not?

[Bug 259614] [NEW] Bad dependency version causes upgrade to fail

2008-08-19 Thread alexrudd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sysvinit

Everything else is up-to-date Intrepid.

sudo apt-get install initscripts

[Bug 260132] [NEW] Cannot login at all

2008-08-21 Thread alexrudd
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 259867 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/259867

Public bug reported:

As of this morning, I cannot login to my laptop (running up-to-date
Intrepid) AT ALL.

Timed login simply restarts X.
Try to manually login at the GDM screen gives a little error window.
"Authentication fail."
Trying to login at a virtual terminal gives the error "Cannot make/rename an
entry for current session."

I tried both users on the system to no avail. Can't change the
importance of this bug myself but it should be Critical because the
system is now a paperweight.

[Bug 146450] Re: [gutsy] Update-manager fails to start

2007-09-29 Thread alexrudd
Whoa; just got a nice little surprise. Over a dozen programs all
crashed in a row, apparently all because of this same corrupted file.

dpkg --search /usr/lib/python2.5/xml/__init__.py
python2.5: /usr/lib/python2.5/xml/__init__.py

With this insight, I reinstalled python2.5 and update-manager worked
again. I'm going to try changing the target to python2.5

I tried that, but it didn't change anything. The file appeared to be
binary, as I was getting plenty of non-ASCII digits. The second time I
opened it, nano said "converted from Mac" formatting. Still no idea on
how the file got corrupted. I've attached it (the copy before I edited
it) if anyone else can make sense of it.

[Bug 146450] [gutsy] Update-manager fails to start

2007-09-28 Thread alexrudd
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I've been running Gutsy for a few weeks now, and updating whenever
updates are available. One of the updates in the past few days killed
update-manager. Apt-get and synaptic work fine, but update-manager does
not.

Update-notifier works fine, but when I click on the icon nothing happens; it
crashes silently. Running update-manager from the command line yields this
error:
 sudo update-manager
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/update-manager", line 32, in
from UpdateManager.UpdateManager import UpdateManager
  File "/usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages/UpdateManager/UpdateManager.py", line

/usr/lib/python2.5/xml/__init__.py on line 1, but no encoding declared; see
http://www.python.org/peps/pep-0263.html for details
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

I'm not sure if the underlying problem is with some XML Python library
or update-manager itself.

3) Important: Do not click anything on the right-click popup!

Now, that's interesting. Your computer stayed in one place during the

station to another mid-connection.

[Bug 219955] Re: BETA 8.04 fail to install broadcom driver (fwcutter) from synaptic pack manager

2008-04-20 Thread alexrudd
The b43-fwcutter package in Ubuntu does not actually contain the
driver/firmware for the wireless card, because Broadcom will not allow
Ubuntu to do so. Instead, the package is a simple script that tries to
download the firmware from the Internet. It's a catch-22, obviously
but there's little to be done about it until Broadcom opens up their
driver.

Can you try plugging your laptop into a wired connection to download it?

If not, try doing it manually. Download
"http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o"; and copy it to
your home directory.
Then try this command "b43-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware wl_apsta-3.130.20.0.o" to
extract the firmware. If everything worked right, it should now appear in the
Restricted Devices Manager.

[Bug 220710] [NEW] An upgrade of readahead should not offer to "upgrade" /etc/readahead/boot

2008-04-22 Thread alexrudd
Public bug reported:

On upgrading readahead, I got the standard debconf prompt about a
changed configuration file:

Configuration file `/etc/readahead/boot'
==> Modified (by you or by a script) since installation.
==> Package distributor has shipped an updated version.
What would you like to do about it ? Your options are:
Y or I : install the package maintainer's version
N or O : keep your currently-installed version
D : show the differences between the versions
Z : background this process to examine the situation
The default action is to keep your current version.
*** boot (Y/I/N/O/D/Z) [default=N] ?

I don't think this should even be mentioned at all. I can not see any
reason why a user would want to replace the file generated explicitly
for their system. Users who have not used the "profile" boot option
will not see this question, and those who have have no use for it.

Likewise, capplets-data failed to install because "scrollkeeper" failed to
install.

Thus the original problem is with scrollkeeper. Here is another bug report with
more information:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-control-center/+bug/216789

A fix has been incorporated upsteam and will be included in the next updates
for scrollkeeper. In the meantime, you can delete the offending file as a
workaround.
Since you probably don't care about Greek help for Blackjack, it is safe to
remove with the following command:
"sudo rm /usr/share/gnome/help/blackjack/el/blackjack.xml"

After updating and upgrading again, the problem should be resolved.

Of course, the instant I hit submit I found what I was looking for.

Adel, as a workaround please try installing compizconfig-settings-manager.
Under general options, click the Opacity Settings tab (it's off to the right.)
In the section labelled Window Opacities, add a new rule using New. Then you
can set which applications (such as gnome-panel) that you want transparent, and
how much. I think this will save across sessions, although if you change the
transparency later with the mouse wheel it will not.

[Bug 196711] Re: single click is considered as double click

2008-02-29 Thread alexrudd
@supiik: I just got lucky when spotting the difference. Glad it worked
for you, though!

@Timo Aaltonen: I don't have access to my Linux partition right now,
but the line I gave is in the ServerLayout section. The diff would look
something like this:

Section "ServerLayout"
__Identifier "name"
__Screen "screen-id"
__ ...
++InputDevice  "Configured Mouse" "CorePointer"
- - InputDevice "Configured Mouse"
__ ...
__options
EndSection
