[Bug 366529] Re: fglrx breaks graphics in 9.04; system won't boot

2009-04-26 Thread Russell
Same issues here. I have an ATI 4850 - for which support has not yet
been dropped as it is a new card. Was working perfectly in 8.10. The
upgrade to 9.04 resulted in graphical corruption on the screen and a
system hang when starting X. Removing the driver allows boot into non-
accelerated GUI. Selecting "system - administration - hardware drivers"
reinstalls the driver and breaks everything again. Even if this is an
ATI problem, the hardware driver application should check which card you
have against a database of supported cards and present the user with
information such as "Your card is not supported by the ATI drivers" and
then not proceed to break the system.

[Bug 346912] Re: Tracker index corruption (was Tracker does not stop indexing)

2009-04-26 Thread Russell
Tracker bugged out for me too. Kept saying the index was corrupted and
the pop-up box came up over and over, regardless of the option selected.
Have tried the manual remove as above:

- remove the contents of ~/.cache/tracker and of
~./.local/share/tracker/data

Perhaps this should be an option on the popup?

2009-05-06 Thread Russell
I'm currently running with the fglrx driver!

I needed to:

* Update the linux kernel to 2.6.28-12-generic (just out today)
* Install the hardware driver, as before
* reboot into safe mode
* copy /etc/ati/control.dpkg-bak to /etc/ati/control
* copy /etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default.dpkg-bak to /etc/ati/amdpcsdb
* reboot again

[Bug 194496] Re: [users-admin] Unlock -> "Could not authenticate. An unexpected error has occurred."

2008-06-02 Thread Russell
Exactly the same problem here. Fresh 8.04 Ubuntu install - fully updated
as of today, 02 June. The only actions taken were:

1. Full update via Synaptic
2. Set static IP via Network Manager
3. Add machine to Active Directory domain using Likewise Open
4. Reboot

Attempting to unlock Network Manager (or Users) results in the error
message and a full desktop lock - only crtl-alt-bkspc works.

Have tried reinstalling policykit - same problem.

Have checked /etc/hosts and the default did not have "machinename" in
the 127.0.0.1 line. Added machine name and retested. Failure still
occurred.

[Bug 294522] Re: Synaptic package manager just showing installed app when using search function

2009-06-09 Thread Russell
Just hit this one with a fresh 9.04 install. Strange, as every other
install of 9.04 I've done _worked_.

Ben's fix, however, doesn't help in this instance - I still only see
packages that are installed when using quicksearch.

Using single-letter "full" searches "works" (as in I get packages that
aren't installed, but searching using only a single letter is next to
useless).

[Bug 155842] whiteglass pointer color is off

2007-10-22 Thread Russell
Public bug reported:

Under ubuntu 7.10, there is an odd issue using the whiteglass pointer.
When selecting this pointer under a Compaq v2000z laptop, the color of
the pointer is white and transparent. When selecting the pointer under
the same generic 7.10 installation on a HP 7100 laptop, the whiteglass
pointer is grey in color and translucent.

I have also noticed when you are viewing the pointer, under the Compaq
where the pointer is white, the display icon for it where you select
what pointer you would like to use is grey, and on the HP where the
pointer is grey, the display icon for it where you select it is white.

Very frustrating as I would like it white on the HP as well.

Re: [Bug 188541] Re: Printing bugin Open Office

2008-02-12 Thread russell
Both machines running Ubuntu 7.10 and the Open Office from within that
package. One machine is running a XP2800 processor with 1 Gigabyte ram
the other machine is running a 64 bit Athlon processor with 1 gigabyte
of ram.

I am able to do multiple copies if I go to the printer driver itself
and set it for multiple pages but if I ask Open Office from within its
own printer dialogue then it only does 1 copy.

Glad to find I am not the only one with this problem. I can get round

It's a strange problem as I have the same setup on both my machines and the
one with 64 bit Sempron will happily work with the printers and do
multiples no problem at all. The machine with an XP2800 processor and 32 bit
does as you say but only in Open Office whichever printer is attached.

[Bug 188541] [NEW] Printing bugin Open Office

2008-02-02 Thread russell
Public bug reported:

When I ask Open Office Writer to print multiple copies from the File -
Print Dialogue and set a number in the box provided it still only prints
one copy. This is not a headache if only wanting a few but if wanting 50
copies it is! I found this initially with the Epson 895 printer but then
tried the same operation to my other printers and the same occurs on a
Samsung M1610 Laser and across my network to my HP 400. The computer is
AMD Athlon 2800 and has 1 gigabyte of Ram available. I use Open Office
on my other machine a AMD 2800 64 bit and it prints multiple copies fine
in Open Office. It is possible to print multiple copies by going tothe
printer driver itself and setting multiple copies but then you get them
for each job you print!

[Bug 120094] dansguardian crashes on upgrade to fiesty

2007-06-12 Thread Russell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: dansguardian

I had danguardian gui from Ubuntu CE installed on a standard Xubuntu
6.10 installation. When upgrading I was asked whether to keep the config
file for dansguardian. I did, though in retrospect I should not have.
The installation failed and halted part way. However, I was able to turn
off dansguardian using the gui and then ran the new dansguardian gui
script for fiesty and everything seems to be working.

I can't tell if I have a full fiesty install and I think the clean up
never happened during the install so I don't know what files are sitting
around on the system but I have a working system and the upgrade manager
says everything is up to date.

[Bug 459947] [NEW] Problem creating mailmerge in Open Office Writer 3.0

2009-10-24 Thread russell
Public bug reported:

I am trying to do a mail merge in Open office 3.0 but find that when I
use the wizard I am only presented the option of using Evolution email
address book. I don't use evolution as an email client in the first
place and have several databases and spreadsheets which have the
information I require. Is there any way of creating mail merge using
these?

[Bug 1611944] [NEW] Kernel / vmlinuz broken for RaspBerry Pi 3

2016-08-10 Thread Russell
Public bug reported:

My RPI3 hangs at the rainbow screen when I attempt boot using the latest
vmlinuz-4.4.0-1019-raspi2. I have tested various releases from
4.3.0-1006.6 to 4.4.0-1019.25 and all return the same result. However
when I use 4.2.0-1014.21 and lower the RPI boots past the rainbow screen
and begins initializing hardware. As a matter of reference 4.3.0 and
above indicates a Xenial build, where as 4.2.0 and lower show as a Wily
build.

I have similarly tested this with an RPI2 and the result is the same.

I am using release 16.04.

[Bug 1611944] Re: Kernel / vmlinuz broken for RaspBerry Pi 3

2016-08-14 Thread Russell
I am not sure if I am to raise a separate bug report but also the stock
firmware linux-firmware-raspi2 (1.20151118+b70b451-0ubuntu1) xenial
appears to be broken for RaspBerry Pi 3. The Firmware however appears
to work for RaspBerry Pi 2.

As a test I was able to successfully boot my RPI3 using 3rd party PPA /
firmware package from Ubuntu Pi Flavour Maker Team
(https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-pi-flavour-
makers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+files/raspberrypi-
bootloader_1.20160315-1~xenial1.0_armhf.deb) but I still needed to use
an older Kernel suggesting both the current stock Kernel and Firmware
are independently broken.

[Bug 921438] [NEW] 11.10 will not start up every time

2012-01-25 Thread Russell
Public bug reported:

I managed to re-install 11.10 from the LiveCD, and I have Grub2 with Windows 7
start option and the other Ubuntu options.
When I select 30.0.0.15 it loads to 'cannot read file, press any key to
continue'. This happens probably 2 out of 3 times. I've looked for solutions on
the internet but when it loads it works fine.

Previous bug (920412) was resolved by deleting the partitions and re-
installing. I have all the latest updates from update manager and Grub2
works fine as Windows 7 boots every time.

There are many suggestions on the Ubuntu forum about solutions but they
are not all the same, so I don't really want to try any of these in case
it makes the situation worse. If I respond by pressing a key, the laptop
hangs and the battery needs to be removed before it can power off.

As I say, when it loads it's fine, and the hardware works well with
Windows 7, and I had no problems with 11.04.

Is there a quick and easy fix for this?

Thank you

[Bug 920412] Re: Install of 11.10 crashes - clean partition, old 11.04 removed

2012-01-25 Thread Russell
Brian - sorry, my misunderstanding about the status fields. I want to
change this to closed but I can't see that as an option. I wiped and
reset the partition and did a fresh install of 11.10 from a LiveCD.

Although 11.10 with 3.0.0.15-generic loads and works well, it does
usually crash on start up from Grub2. In fact, it locks the computer
completely. This problem seems to be fairly well recorded on the forum,
though I haven't seen a fix for it. It appears that the kernel doesn't
load and then Grub returns a bad partition error. After a reboot or two
11.10 loads and so far seems to work very well. I don't believe this is
a hardware issue as the system is fairly new and Windows 7 loads fine
each time.

[Bug 587011] Re: "Authentication is required to install software package" AFTER entering my password.

2010-10-08 Thread Russell
Hi,

I am also having the same problem. I am new to Linux / Ubuntu, so
apologies for my lack of technical explanation!

Whenever I select something in the Ubuntu Software Centre and click
'install' I have the normal 'Authentication is required to Install
software packages' window pop up. I enter my admin password (account
password), and the password box disappears.I get the drum noise (single
drum hit), the password section gos away and it just sits on the
Authenticate Windows.

I am running the desktop 10.04 version and have recently installed all
of the Ubuntu Studio packages as per the Ubuntu help forums.

If any logs would help please let me know and I'll post them here.

Thanks.

[Bug 261495] [NEW] crontab -e: nano word wrap causes errors in crontab file

2008-08-26 Thread Russell Briggs
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 8.04.1

I am using crontab -e, which launches nano to edit a temporary crontab
file. The problem I have is that my crontab lines are quite long, and
are wrapped to the next line by nano. It seems nano then saves the auto-
generated newlines which results in an invalid crontab file.

To fix this you just need to pass in the -w parameter to nano to stop it
wrapping lines (or in my case i edited /etc/nanorc and enabled the 'set
nowrap' line)

[Bug 305609] [NEW] cannot disable low ink warning

2008-12-05 Thread Russell Sears
Public bug reported:

I have an HP printer, and it reports low ink when the cartridge still
has a month or two of ink left in it. (By 'reports low ink', I mean it
turns on a warning light for the cartridge, and the built-in diagnostic
test page and hpilp report a ink level of zero). The printer has 4
cartridges, and I don't replace them all at once, so they have varying
levels of ink (the current reported ink levels are "0%", 50%, 75% and
99%).

Anyway, I can't remember the last time all of the low ink warnings were
off. Interestingly, the printer disables itself when it actually runs
out of ink. It'd be nice if that error condition were reported by gnome
(in fact it might be...)

I know there's nothing ubuntu can do to fix the ridiculously early low-
ink warnings, but I wish I could make it stop reporting low ink *every
time* I print a document. Ideally the setting could be made via a gui
on the ubuntu machine with the printer plugged into it. I appreciate
the other printer warning messages gnome reports, but the low ink one is
really driving me nuts.

(I'm using ubuntu intrepid. I see the low ink warning on the print
server, and two laptops...)

[Bug 299185] [NEW] mailscanner 4.68.8 plus clamav 0.94.1

when MailScanner invoked clamav. ... #ubuntu-motu->Scottk:"clamav

Because of the licensing of the unrar code in clamav."

So I went in to /etc/MailScanner/MailScanner.conf and set 'Unrar Command = '
and removed /usr/bin/unrar
I also when into /etc/MailSacner/wrapper/clamav-wrapper and commented out
#ExtraScanOptions="$ExtraScanOptions

restarted mailscanner and sent a message, without any more WARNING
message.

also #mailscanner->shortword: 4.72.5-1 has the fix for that particular
issue

So I don't know what you guys want to do with this issue, but there is a
issue going on.

Thanks,
~Russ

I've tried with both mcrypt extension installed and without. Neither
produces the error for me. What php extensions do you have installed.
I can only think something is going on there. Are you on 64 bit or 32
bit?

I've tried on both amd64 and 32bit. Neither produces the error.

The only other strange thing is that my build is 2 minutes later than
yours for php. Is something funny going on there. Can you force a
reinstall of php and see if the bug continues?

Yes, different architectures is correct.

I posted the amd64 'php --version'. My i386 build reports the same
build time as the original reporter.

And still neither machine is able to produce the error.

Without more details I'm not sure how to diagnose this problem.

Pawel, you are not experiencing this on the new version of ubuntu (8.10)
and you don't have any other machines with the fault. Is that correct?

If that is all correct, should this be closed?

[Bug 280805] Re: nvidia graphics driver 177.80 on geforce 8400 makes fan spin all the time

2009-05-13 Thread Russell Hedger
According to the nvidia-settings application, my XPS M1330 idles at 40
Celsius. Even watching full screen video, it doesn't get significantly
hotter than this.

I have the latest A15 BIOS installed and have the nvidia-glx driver

[Bug 367275] Re: [i915GM] Binary data added to Xorg.0.log.old and screen stays blank

2009-05-13 Thread Tina Russell
I have the same problem on my ThinkPad X61 Tablet.

Also, the system has been crashing often (every 1-3 days), with the same
symptom of binary data in Xorg.0.log.old. (In both cases, I’ll look for
data in syslog, messages, etc., and there isn’t anything unusual there.)
Next time I get a sudden crash I’ll save the Xorg.0.log.old and post it
here.

[Bug 363900] Re: [i945GM] (Needs UXA) X.org freezes with intel driver, no apparent trigger

2009-05-14 Thread Tina Russell
This looks kind of like bug #367275, which I’ve been struggling with.
Steve, when you had this problem, do you remember if Xorg.0.log.old had
the mimetype "application/x-trash"? (That would have made it difficult
to open in the text editor or the log viewer, as nothing will recognize
it as a regular text file, even if it has regular text data and will
open fine if you tell the text editor specifically to do so.) That’s
been the symptom for me.

I’ll try some alternate settings, now

[Bug 367275] Re: [i915GM] Binary data added to Xorg.0.log.old and screen stays blank

2009-05-14 Thread Tina Russell
Okay, I just realize my symptoms differ significantly; if you look at my
Xorg.0.log.old, you’ll see it opens just fine as a regular text file (if
you explicitly open it with a text editor), it just has a mimetype that
implies a binary file. I just opened Jonathan’s log and realized the
extent of the binary junk... the log has a huge load of it right
upfront. I couldn’t ever find any binary junk in my log, I just assumed
it was there and the text editor ignored it (I assumed it was _there_
because of the odd change in mimetype).

So, maybe I have a different but similar problem. Ga

Here’s my xorg.conf and lspci -vv output, by the way.

[Bug 292761] Re: [i855] laptop screen flickers

2009-01-28 Thread Russell O'Connor
Comin Roman's "solution" works for me too. I did the same except
without

   Option "monitor-TMDS" "dvi"

which wasn't reported by xrandr for me.

I also have tonnes of those two lines, along with a few:

(EE) intel(0): tried to update DSPARB with both planes enabled!

VLC starts up a little ``clunky'', but seems to work once it gets going.
I have blue stripes around the windows that cover the video, but there is no
flicker and my X does not crash.

In VLC I switch Tools -> Preferences. Show Settings All. Video ->
Output modules -> XVideo -> XVideo adaptor number change from "-1" to
"1" (which was suggesting in another thread) the blue bars around
windows covering the video go away.

Obviously Cosmin's "solution" isn't a real fix, but it helps.

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-06-19 Thread Cody Russell
I disagree that there should be an option hidden away in some preference
page somewhere. If there's some question as to whether it's a good idea
or not, the next step might be some kind of usability study. Adding a
checkbox in a preference page is the "we don't know the solution" kind
of solution though. :)

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-06-21 Thread Cody Russell
Regarding the "where in the selection you click" issue that someone
mentioned above, I just tested on Vista and it does distinguish between
clicking on an icon and clicking on the label.

I tested first on the desktop, where I'm using an icon layout. If I
click the icon to select the item, move the mouse away, and click the
icon again then it does not go into rename mode. Once the item is
selected if I instead click on the label then it goes into rename mode.

I tested in a folder that has details layout on, and I was surprised to
find the same is true. Even though the icon is very small to the left
of the label, clicking the icon of a selected item does not go into
rename mode.

I tried clicking on the 'empty' space to the right of the label (but
still within the selected row), hoping that this would also not trigger
the rename mode. Sadly, it does. My personal feeling is that if this
bug is to be implemented in Nautilus then I would like to see rename
mode be triggered only if you click on the actual label; clicking on the
icon should never put you in rename mode, and in a list/details type
view I feel that clicking the 'empty' space to the right of the label
should not put you in rename mode.

This is my own feeling about it. However, I still think it couldn't
hurt to get some usability testing somehow. We should wait for input
from David Siegel or Ivanka to find out if they agree and what would be
involved in that (e.g., should we write the patch first so they have
both versions available for testing?)

Comments such as the one from Textureglitch are not very useful. He
seems to be coming from the opposite angle than some others; that is,
some of the people here are saying we should do this because Windows/Mac
users are used to it, while Textureglitch seems to be against it simply
because he's not used to it or doesn't like it personally. What we need
is some data to back up one side or the other so we can either abandon
this or push it upstream with some confidence.

[Bug 345119] Re: [i965 X3100] X freezes randomly, only mouse pointer still functional

2009-06-21 Thread Russell Faull
I have similar problem on Dell 6400 with Intel 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML
Express Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:27a2] (rev 03) . After
trying almost everything suggested in this and other threads --
including kernel 2.6.30 with driver 2.6 and 2.8 -- I've downgrades Intel
video driver to 2.4 (as described in Jaunty Release Notes), I think this
is the Hardy release, and have not had a freeze in the last 5 days.

Reverted to kernel 2.6.28-13, with Compiz set to 'normal'.

[Bug 48671] Re: Cannot rename by clicking on a file

2009-06-22 Thread Cody Russell
"I'm not exactly sure how my comment is not as useful as the others just
because I have an opposing opinion."

Saying it's an "unbelievably stupid UI design" isn't in itself useful,
in my opinion. There are other people who seem to say it's a good idea,
so if it just comes down to taking one person's word for it vs. another
then you and the people of the opposite opinion then we're right back
where we started. It may not be a good UI design, but I think there are
ways of collecting data on this other than reading these type of
responses.

"And distinguishing between icon and label is not a good solution
because that makes the selection area too small to be useful (especially
in list and compact view) and you always end up clicking on the label
the second time anyway because this is big and easy to click and better
symbolizes the file you're trying to manipulate."

This is one reason why I'm suggesting that IF someone were to implement
this that the only clickable area should be the actual text, not the
empty area to the right of the text (whether that empty space is
technically part of the label or not). In Windows it seems that the
entire cell area to the right of the icon is considered "the label", so
it's very easy to put it into rename mode even if you don't click on the
icon or the text. These kind of differences may (or may not) make a
difference in your bad experiences on Windows in the past.

Just to be clear, I'm not meaning to say your opinion isn't useful.
It's good to know that people have had bad experiences with this sort of
feature in the past. The only thing is that I want to avoid this
getting too heated with strong terms like "unbelievably stupid". I
don't think that sort of thing is productive to the discussion, and I'd
like to keep this as productive as possible.

[Bug 197290] Re: 2 gb max inbox

2009-06-04 Thread Cody Russell
So, my mom's Ubuntu Hardy (yeah I know, old) machine has this problem
and I took a look at it this morning. I think it works now. I changed
one line in the configure file for the libcamel1.2-whatever package:

LARGEFILE_CFLAGS="-D_LARGEFILE64_SOURCE"

gets changed to:

LARGEFILE_CFLAGS="-D_LARGEFILE64_SOURCE -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64"

Then rebuilt the package and installed it on my mom's computer, and it
seems to be working fine now.

[Bug 197290] Re: 2 gb max inbox

2009-06-04 Thread Cody Russell
I looked at the configure file for Jaunty and it looks like this should
already be fixed in Jaunty. I ran configure to check the output and I
saw:

checking for _FILE_OFFSET_BITS value needed for large files... 64

Which is what we want. So probably my fix only applies to releases
older than Jaunty.

[Bug 197290] Re: 2 gb max inbox

2009-06-04 Thread Cody Russell
C: Wow, thanks so much for getting a PPA build of this so fast! That's
great.

Luis: I probably have over 2gb on my Jaunty desktop, but it's in a box
for the next few days since I've been moving. So I can't actually
verify it right now. I just took a peek at the configure.in file for
e-d-s in Jaunty and it appeared to be fixed.

If this fixes everything, then it would be great to get it backported to
everything prior to Jaunty that needs it. Looks like C is on top of
that stuff, so many thanks to him.

I've seen this issue for awhile, but in the past just used the quick-fix
of archiving the mail using the script someone posted above somewhere.
But my mom doesn't want to run scripts, and we shouldn't be expecting
our users to do ridiculous things like that. So my mom ran into the
issue again recently, but I didn't know how to describe to her over the
phone how to find and run that script. I was visiting today so I took
the opportunity this morning while I could reproduce the problem to try
to find out a solution. Hopefully this works for everyone.

[Bug 368651] Re: mayavi segfaults on startup

2009-06-15 Thread Francis Russell
Is anyone interested at looking at this? The segfault is most certainly
a high importance bug and makes this package unusable. I'm having to
resort to using mayavi2 which is not nearly as usable. I also note that
Debian mayavi works fine, which adds a basis for comparison.

[Bug 194213] Re: Dim files when you 'cut' them for later 'paste' action

2009-06-30 Thread Cody Russell
I find the cut icons very confusing. They exist on different corners of
the icons, and they exist on both dimmed icons and non-dimmed icons.

The only question I have about David's mockup is how prelight/mouseover
affects a dimmed icon. Right now when you mouseover an icon it lightens
up a bit, so I guess if you mouseover a dimmed icon then it lightens up
some more?

[Bug 381650] [NEW] help.ubuntu.com does not tell you how to determine which version you have

2009-05-29 Thread Russell Hires
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

The very first thing you see on the help.ubuntu.com page is to choose
your version, but what if you don't know the version? How do you find
that out? The information on how to determine which version should be on
the front page. That way you go to the correct version of your
documents.

[Bug 367275] Re: [i915GM] Binary data added to Xorg.0.log.old and screen stays blank

2009-05-21 Thread Tina Russell
I’ve started using the 2.6.30 RC5 kernel (using the package available at
the Ubuntu kernel PPA, though I installed the package manually) and the
X-Updates PPA. Anyway, I still get these crashes, but now it won’t crash
the whole system, it will merely crash X.org, which restarts after a
bit. (The screen will still be frozen in place for something like half a
minute, though.) And, the Xorg.0.log.old is now more useful, including a
backtrace. (It’s still has the strange mimetype problem.)

(I still have the “screen blanks at login” problem, sometimes, but I
haven’t had to restart as much so I haven’t been as aware.)

[Bug 77441] Re: OpenOffice.org From Template crashes

2009-05-26 Thread Tina Russell
I’m getting this problem on Jaunty on my i386 machine. It happens as
soon as you select a type of document or template, and it will happen
whether you started the program as “OpenOffice.org From Template” or you
selected the “Documents and Templates” from the New Document submenu of
the File menu of an OpenOffice program (like Writer).

[Bug 349336] Re: Ambiguous wording in confirmation alert box

2009-07-04 Thread Cody Russell
If I'm reading the patch correctly, it seems that you're changing the
response types in the buttons but not in the actual dialog response
handling.

dialog = self.gtk.MessageDialog(parent=self.window_main,
 type=self.gtk.MESSAGE_WARNING,
-buttons=self.gtk.BUTTONS_YES_NO,
+buttons=self.gtk.BUTTONS_NONE,
 message_format=msg)

The response types were GTK_RESPONSE_YES and GTK_RESPONSE_NO before..

+ dialog.add_button(self.gtk.STOCK_CANCEL, self.gtk.RESPONSE_CLOSE)
+ remove = dialog.add_button(self.gtk.STOCK_OK,self.gtk.RESPONSE_YES)

And here the buttons added use GTK_RESPONSE_YES and GTK_RESPONSE_CLOSE.
