[Bug 54091] Re: Font rendering problem in Gecko based applications
I installed Breezy on another partition. Breezy didn't has this problem so firefox that came by default with Breezy installation CD worked fine with Urdu fonts. but Epiphany which I downloaded and installed showed the same symptoms that we are seeing in Dapper. -- Font rendering problem in Gecko based applications https://launchpad.net/bugs/54091 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 54091] Re: Font rendering problem in Gecko based applications
It seems that In Ubuntu Firefox Pango support is enabled for selective locales only. Adding the line: MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=0 in /etc/environment has resolved the problem for me and now I can see the Web pages in Urdu displayed with perfect font rendering. But this isn't the solution to the problem because now I will have to tell people that they need to add this line in order to view Urdu web pages on firefox. These are the people I am trying to convince to use Ubuntu and they wouldn't like this idea. Also adding the above line had a reverse effect on Galeon web browser which showed no symptoms of the bug but after adding this line Firefox works fine but Galeon has inherited the issue. -- Font rendering problem in Gecko based applications https://launchpad.net/bugs/54091 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 32561] Re: Pango-enabled firefox is much slower
It seems that the fix released is actually stopping web pages in Urdu Fonts to display correctly in Firefox, Epiphany, Mozilla Thunderbird. However it does not effects Galeon. When I tried Firefox after adding: MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=0 in /etc/environment It started rendering Urdu web pages perfectly. What does it mean? Well whatever it does, it is surely stopping a whole lot of people who read Urdu web pages using Firefox, seeing that their beloved web browser in Ubuntu doesn't display their language they would prolly switch back. another interesting thing that happened after trying this solution was that Galeon inherited firefox's behavior. -- Pango-enabled firefox is much slower https://launchpad.net/bugs/32561 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 32561] Re: Pango-enabled firefox is much slower
Actually what firefox does is that it displays the page with out Pango most urdu pages remain readable but firefox uses someother font like Tahoma (if installed) and it even renders Tahoma badly for urdu. I don't quite understand how this patch works. I assume that by Installing Urdu language packs from Language Selector we would be able to use pango system wide? -- Pango-enabled firefox is much slower https://launchpad.net/bugs/32561 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 54091] Re: Font rendering problem in Gecko based applications
Applying the above solution to firefox creates major performance issues: 1. Firefox becomes slower, consuming 100% cpu at times and crashes quite often. 2. Galeon starts rendering Urdu pages incorrectly after applying the above solution. Our problem seems related to the patch applied for the bug https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/32561";>#32561. Now if we apply the MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=0 we would be using a slower Firefox with frequent crashes and work loss and If we don't apply this solution we wont be able to view Urdu pages properly. I should have added the attachments at the time of reporting the bug but at that time I was unaware of how bug tracking systems work. So here I am attaching a File displaying Epiphany displaying http://www.urduweb.org/mehfil";>Urdu Mehfil with Pango support enabled and Firefox displaying the same page without Pango support. -- Font rendering problem in Gecko based applications https://launchpad.net/bugs/54091 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 32561] Re: Pango-enabled firefox is much slower
Matt actually our problem is directly related to the patch applied here. If we enable Pango by adding: MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=0 We would be able to render Urdu Pages but our Firefox would be a lot more slower and consuming 100% cpu resources at times. I have noticed that with Pango enabled firefox crashes quite often and that it is certainly not an acceptable compromise. We already have a bug report filed #54091. But the solution to our problem lies right here. How Ubuntu decides to deal with this bug directly affects the Urdu Font rendering and Firefox performance issues for us. -- Pango-enabled firefox is much slower https://launchpad.net/bugs/32561 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 50751] Re: add dependancy to package, to properly view "urdu" text in firefox
I agree that there must be some decent fonts available in Ubuntu out of the box but I dont think that ttf-pakType are any decent fonts to view Urdu webpages. They are not fully compatible with standards and doesn't contain several characters for Urdu. Instead, I would strongly recommend Nafees Web Naskh. http://www.crulp.org/nafeesWebNaskh.html According to license stated there, we are free to redistribute, modify and commercially use this font. Still, I think that Crulp's license is not compatible with Ubuntu philosophy which is no problem at all since the license allow us to modify and rename the file to distribute it with some other name not containing words Nafees or Crulp. I will try to report this to upstream, meanwhile I would like to add my recent investigation. I noticed that the problem occurs in these two conditions: 1. [Bug 114944] Pango support required to view urdu webpages
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: language-support-ur In Dapper we needed to add this line to enable pango so that Firefox renders Urdu web pages properly: MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=0 The situation is same in Feisty so what we need to do is that this line automatically gets inserted when someone installs urdu support package, language-pack-ur, language-pack-gnome-ur, language-pack-kde-ur, ttf- nafees Also please note that the Urdu Pakistan keyboard layout (/etc/X11/xkb/symbols/pk) that comes with Ubuntu is totally useless. 99% users change this to a phonetic keyboard layout. [Bug 54091] Re: Font rendering problem in Gecko based applications
I installed Ubuntu Feisty and we still need to add MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=0 in /etc/environment in order to properly view Urdu pages. I don't think it is a bug, because it is a decission made by the Ubuntu developers to disable pango in Firefox shipped with Ubuntu. I installed Debian Etch and using iceweasel 2.0.3 which works fine without adding anything anywhere. I do not notice any significant performance issues on Debian iceweasel where pango support is enabled by default. One possible solution for the problem is that when a user installs any urdu related language page, or the font ttf-nafees Ubuntu automatically enables pango support. However with pango Ubuntu's firefox is really very slow even a non tech guy like me can tell the difference between iceweasel and ubuntu's firefox without doing any speed or performance tests. -- Font rendering problem in Gecko based applications https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/54091 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
