[Bug 245596] [NEW] information provided by System Services is incorrect

2008-07-04 Thread N7DR
Public bug reported:

Running Kubuntu gutsy amd64.

Go to System Settings | System Services. The status of many of the
listed services is incorrect. Many of the services are listed as "not
running" when in fact they are running. This bug has been confirmed by
several users on the Kubuntu-users reflector. (See
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and the following messages
in that thread.)

This bug does not seem to be confined to 64-bit gutsy; that just happens
to be the version I am running.

It is possible that this bug represents a security vulnerability:
although I have seen only cases in which a service is listed as "not
running" when in fact it is running, if the opposite also occurs then it
is possible that a user might believe that a security-related service is
running when in fact it is not running. Since I haven't seen an instance
in which the status is mis-reported for a process that is actually NOT
running, I will not list this as a security vulnerability. However, I
encourage the security team to look at this bug to determine whether
there are any cases in which the status of NOT-running services is
misreported.

[Bug 305519] [NEW] include debug version of libkorganizerprivate.so

2008-12-05 Thread N7DR
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: korganizer

Kubuntu 8.10 64-bit.

There doesn't seem to be a debug version of libkorganizerprivate.so

This means that it's difficult for the KDE developers to debug crashes
in kontact, since the debug backtraces are incomplete.

[Bug 303522] Re: there should be a way to install all debug libraries easily

2008-12-07 Thread N7DR
Very good question. If one reads the two reports at face value, I don't
think they're quite the same.

I think that the intention of 304129 is that after a crash, you should
be presented with the capability install the debug libraries for the
crashed application (at the moment, you have to go find them yourself
and install them manually).

The purpose of this report is a bit different: to have one-click
installation of all the possible debug libraries, even before the first
application crash (i.e., something one would perform during or
immediately after installing the system).

That's my understanding of the two reports, anyway.

[Bug 224889] Re: Povray preview windows appear transparent

2008-11-18 Thread N7DR
This remains a problem in intrepid (I'm using 64-bit Kubuntu).

The OP understates the effect of this bug.

It's bad enough that the preview window is utterly useless (and hence
povray is more or less useless for rendering complex scenes, as one
cannot watch the progress of the scene generation, which may take many
hours).

I am reduced to using Windows for povray (on a much slower machine; but
at least I can see problems in real time as the scene is rendered).

[Bug 300323] [NEW] look and behaviour of scrollbars in Thunderbird are messed up

2008-11-20 Thread N7DR
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

Running:

64-bit Kubuntu intrepid, with compiz enabled. Thunderbird 2.0.0.17.

The scrollbars in Thunderbird:
  1. Look wrong; they are little squares instead of being extended rectangles
  2. Behave weirdly: they disappear when the cursor goes above them, and they
jump around weirdly when you scroll around

I note that there is an item in System Settings | Appearance | GTK
Styles and Fonts called "install scrollbar fix" that seems to claim that
it will fix these problems. It has no effect whatsoever on my system.

FWIW, scrollbars in Firefox behave perfectly.

[Bug 176370] Re: [kernel disk scheduler] tasks that use disk heavily starve other tasks of disk access

2008-11-22 Thread N7DR
Please reopen this bug.

Exactly the same behaviour occurs with intrepid. Even on completely
different hardware. (In fact, it seems to happen on every system I've
tried it on, so it seems like it should be easy for developers to
duplicate.)

Here are the files you requested:

1. uname -a:

[Bug 303519] [NEW] okularpart debug library missing

2008-11-29 Thread N7DR
Public bug reported:

In order to help the KDE developrs, they need complete backtraces when a
crash occurs.

This means that debug libraries need to be available and installed.

I just experienced a crash in okular, but the backtrace shows that a
non-debug version of /usr/lib/kde4/okularpart.so is installed. When I go
to synaptic to look for a debug version of that library, I don't see a
package that seems to indicate that one is available.

Hence, one cannot usefully report okular crashes to bugs.kde.org.

This is a fully up-to-date 64-bit installation of Kubuntu intrepid (KDE
4.1.3; okular 0.7.3).

[Bug 303522] [NEW] there should be a way to install all debug libraries easily

2008-11-29 Thread N7DR
Public bug reported:

I submit frequent bug reports to bugs.kde.org.

Often these reports contain backtraces; but I often find myself in the
situation that I only realise that a non-debug library for some
particular application is installed AFTER a crash has occurred (because
in that case the backtrace shows that debugging symbols weren't
available in the library that was in use).

So I end up manually installing the debug library at that point (only
after that particular application has crashed).

There should be some way in Kubuntu to say globally "install debug
libraries" (or even something like "install debug libraries for standard
KDE apps"), so that one can do the installation once and all
applications will have debugging information available the first time
that they crash.

always consistent: no new upgrade is available.

Other people on the official Kubuntu-users reflector seem to have
received the notification and performed the upgrade OK. But on my system
there seems to be no way to convince it that there are files that need
upgrading. (Presumably, I could download a CD and install from that; but
that doesn't address the basic problem that the right thing doesn't seem
to be happening for me to upgrade over the Internet.)

2009-04-27 Thread N7DR
I am out of ideas as to how to convince the system that intrepid is
online upgradeable to jaunty.

Someone had suggested reinstalling update-notifier-kde. I tried that but
it made no difference (which makes sense, since I think it's just doing
its job: reporting correctly that as far as the system is concerned,
nothing needs updating).

2009-04-28 Thread N7DR
Naïvely thinking out loud here (which is probably not welcome, but I'm
not happy at not being able to upgrade and I want to try to move this
along)...

It seems to me that some condition is tested to determine whether the
upgrade notification is displayed. For some reason that condition
appears to be false when it should be true. Do we know what that
condition is? Perhaps then we could work back to figure out *why* it's
false.

[Bug 367495] Re: [intrepid]: no upgrade notification for jaunty received, manual attempt says nothing to upgrade

2009-04-29 Thread N7DR
Yes, I am aware of the workaround.

However, I figure that for every person who knows enough to do that, or
to come here to file a bug report, there are probably hundreds or
thousands of ordinary users who are seeing the same bug and don't know
what to do about it, so I think it is still important for the developers
to be aware of the bug and to fix it.

The weird thing is that overnight last night, I finally received the
upgrade notification on the laptop which had this problem. I did nothing
at all to cause it to appear, but it looks like today's daily status
check for some reason was informed that an upgrade is available, whereas
none of the status checks in the past week have done so.

[Bug 181603] Re: [gutsy] korganizer alarms sometimes fail to fire

2008-10-16 Thread N7DR

Yes, I am still seeing this.

I can't figure out a complete description of how to definitely reproduce
it.

But this seems usually to work:
Create an event in korganizer with an associated alarm a short time in the
future (a few minutes, for example). Pretty much always, it won't fire.

It seems that logging out and logging back in to KDE will cause the
alarms always to fire properly.

As far as I can tell, the associated calendar entries (like the one in
the original report) look fine. It's as if whatever is responsible for
reading the file and figuring out when to fire alarms doesn't properly
recognize when one has created a new entry in the file.

2008-10-16 Thread N7DR
Why was this marked "invalid"???

I waited for quite a long time and then manually added this key to the
MIT server, because there's no point in a public key that's not
available on the usual network of public keyservers.

Do you mean that the problem has been fixed and the Ubuntu keyserver now
synchronises properly with MIT? If so, then surely "invalid" isn't the
right tag.

[Bug 180640] Re: "Crypto Settings" tab of Contacts module in kontact will not allow one to set a PGP/GPG key to use

2008-10-28 Thread N7DR
Running KDE 3.5.10, 64-bit hardy, kontact version 1.2.9.

One reaches the "Crypto Settings" tab from the "Edit Contact" dialogue.

The place to enter the key is no longer greyed out. So that's good.

BUT

if one tries to select a key (which is now possible), the button choices
are labelled "Start Certificate Manager" and "Re-read Keys". Presumably,
one is supposed to press the "Start Certificate Manager" button. But
when one does so, one receives the message "Could not start certificate
manager; please check your installation.".

Possibly this means that some required package is not being installed
along with kdepim.

I have those four buttons, but the "OK" is greyed out.

Seems like there's probably several bugs intertwined here (and it sounds
like some of them have been fixed in KDE4, but not all of them).

[Bug 151093] Re: [Kubuntu] text in Openoffice.org can't be pasted correctly with the middle mouse button

2008-10-04 Thread N7DR
Cut/Paste seems to be completely broken in OOo 2.4 in hardy.

Running Kubuntu hardy 64-bit, OOo 2.4.

In OOo Writer:

1. In a new document, write some text.
2. Select any part of the text with left mouse button.
3. Try to paste with middle button.

Nothing is pasted.

Happens 100% of the time here. It's maddening.

[Bug 243582] [NEW] unable to switch desktops with some key combinations

2008-06-27 Thread N7DR
Public bug reported:

Using gutsy kubuntu, amd-64.

This is completely reproducible.

1. Set up multiple desktops (I have 10).
2. Go to System Settings | Keyboard & Mouse | Keyboard Shortcuts | Shortcut
Sequences
3. Set up keyboard sequences of the form "Win + KP_digit" for the desktops
(for example "Win + KP_1" to switch to desktop 1)
4. Apply the changes
5. Hit "Win + KP_digit". Your desktop should change to desktop number KP_digit,
but it doesn't.

If one does the above but just uses regular digits (not keypad digits),
it works fine. So it looks like there's a problem with using keypad
digits for switching desktops.

This problem has been confirmed by another user on the Kubuntu-user
reflector.

[Bug 178762] Re: kubuntu: no way to set maximum size or duration for trash

2008-05-15 Thread N7DR
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 228369 ***

bug #228369 addresses only one of these two requests (the second one).

The first request is probably the more important (since it duplicates
Windows' behaviour, which is what many people will expect).

[Bug 312814] [NEW] margin kerning include files not in pdftex search path

2008-12-31 Thread N7DR
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: texlive

64-bit intrepid. texlive 2007.dfsg.1-2.

The usual way to use margin kerning in pdftex is to include the file
"protcode.tex" (which then includes other files).

Two (identical) copies of protcode.tex are installed in intrepid:

[HN:usr] find . -name protcode.tex
./share/doc/texlive-doc/pdftex/thanh/ext/protcode.tex
./share/doc/texlive-base-bin-doc/pdftex/thanh/ext/protcode.tex
[HN:usr]

But neither of them is in the path searched by pdftex. This means that the
usual line
\input protcode.tex
fails.

Most likely, the problem is due to the fact that neither of these
directories is included in kpathsea. The relevant files should therefore
be also included in a directory that is available via the kpathsea
mechanism. (Note that this is only my guess as to the problem... the
basic bug is simply that "\input protcode.tex" fails.)

[Bug 317202] [NEW] incorrect help file for kgamma

2009-01-14 Thread N7DR
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kgamma

This bug was originally filed at
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=180606. However, from the comments
there it seems to be a kubuntu bug, not a KDE one.

Having installed kgamma 4:4.1.3-0ubuntu1~intrepid1 on a 64-bit Kubuntu 8.10
system, I tried running it from krandrtray (see bug report 315925).

Using it wasn't obvious, so I hit "Help" and got a page that talks about
something that bears little resemblance to what kgamma was showing me.

The help page seems to be:
  help:/kcontrol/kcmdisplay/index.html
This help page says that it is "Revision 1.01.00 (2007-07-29)". So I think it's
referring to an old (KDE3) program, which is why it seems to make no sense in
the context of the current kgamma.

So, basically, it seems that either kgamma needs some help written for it. Or,
if that already exists, then it needs to be displayed when you hit "Help".

Note added from bugs.kde.org: this works in Mandriva, and the displayed
file in Mandriva is help:/kgamma/index.html, (which turns out to be the
correct file), not help:/kcontrol/kcmdisplay/index.html as is displayed
by Kubuntu.

[Bug 318308] Re: no help for kontact

2009-01-18 Thread N7DR
Do you think should I start a new bug that says something to the effect
of: "tell the user that he needs to install khelpuser"? I mean, as it
stands, "normal" user is just going to see the error message and form a
negative opinion of Kubuntu, so it really is a bug as seen from the
user's perspective (he's asked for help, and hasn't received any).

And should this possible new bug be filed here or on bugs.kde.org?

[Bug 315925] [NEW] kgamma installs... but there's no indication how to run it

2009-01-10 Thread N7DR
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kgamma

I have installed kgamma 4:4.1.3-0ubuntu1~intrepid1 into my Kubuntu 8.10
64-bit system...

But I can't figure out how to run it.

1. It doesn't seem to be in the K menu anywhere (or at least not anywhere
obvious).
2. It doesn't seem to be in System Settings (which is where I expected it;
that's where it was in KDE3, under Computer Administration | Monitor & Display;
but it's not under System Settings | Computer Administration | Display, or
anywhere else that I can see).
3. It doesn't run from a terminal.

So Kubuntu needs to make it much more obvious how to run kgamma.

[Bug 151093] Re: [Kubuntu] [amd64] text in Openoffice.org can't be pasted correctly with the middle mouse button

2009-01-19 Thread N7DR
I don't know what "as official as you get" means :-( It seems to me that
I would be offered to update the packages if they were official. Maybe
I've done something wrong, but the machines here are all configured with
repositories exactly the way Kubuntu configures them out-of-the-box, [we
are very careful not to mess with that, having ended up in deep trouble
in the past by trying to use non-official packages] and the version of
OO.o that I'm running is the latest one offered, which is
:1:2.4.1-11ubuntu2.1 (intrepid-updates).

So if I have to wait, I'll wait. Having a hosed production machine (as
has happened all too often in the past when following advice to move
away from official packages) is too high a price. It seems like there
are OO.o updates fairly frequently anyway, so presumably we'll get
another one before long.

If one installs krecipes and then attempts to remove it, using "Mark for

success, but in fact there are numerous krecipes files left behind
(explicitly INCLUDING the configuration file krecipesrc).

I assume that this is a packaging error in krecipes rather than a bug in

[Bug 278415] Re: krecipes crashes before it can launch

2008-12-20 Thread N7DR
yep, me too. krecipes is completely borked on 64-bit intrepid.

I basically did the same as Scott S. First time I tried to install it, I
stepped through the initialization sequence and it crashed when I hit
"Finish" (instantly, though. not after a few minutes).

I performed a "complete removal" from synaptic. Reinstalled. Then it
crashed instantly on start-up. Another "complete removal"; at which
point I looked and saw that "complete removal" doesn't seem to mean
*complete* removal (argh) because there were still krecipes files in the
~/kde/ hierarchy. I manually removed them. Reinstalled krecipes. Still
it crashes instantly on startup.

[Bug 252026] Re: Hardy package for tovid doesn't place makemenu, makexml etc. into user's path

2008-12-20 Thread N7DR
You may not want to call this a bug, but to a user the behaviour is
indistinguishable from a bug. When something is installed, the user
expects to be able to execute the program without having to figure out
that it's been somewhere elsewhere than in his path. At the very least,
there should be some sort of warning about this unexpected behavioue
when the package is installed. However, I would urge you to reconsider
the "this is not a bug" stance.

In detail, the reasons I think that you should reconsider this stance:

"They are low-level utilities"

What does "low-level" mean? They are scripts, so by definition they can
hardly be "low-level". System calls are low-level.

"that most users aren't interested in"

But the user has explicitly installed this package. Therefore, by
definition, *this* user *is* interested in them.

"and they have generic names that pollute the namespace"

So are there other programs that are in other packages and which ARE
installed into the path that duplicate these names? If there is indeed a
name clash, then I agree that there is a problem and someone should
consider changing the names in one of the packages. If there is no name
clash, then what is the issue?

[Bug 328324] [NEW] wish: please include webmin package

2009-02-11 Thread N7DR
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure why webmin isn't included with Kubuntu. I checked, and the
licensing info says: "All recent versions of Webmin are under a BSD-like
licence, meaning that it may be freely distributed and modified for

So it seems like it should be OK to include it in Kubuntu.

I used to use webmin under Mandriva, and it was a great centralized

[Bug 332750] [NEW] unable to install kdeplasma-addons (unmet dependency)

2009-02-21 Thread N7DR
Public bug reported:

My 64-bit 8.10 Kubuntu system updated a mass of stuff today from

Now most of my plasmoids are inaccessible.

After the update I tried to re-install kdeplasma-addons manually, and it
reports:

According to synaptic, the version of libexiv2 that synaptic has
installed is libexiv2-3 (package version 0.1.7-1-1ubuntu1). It does not
list a libexiv2-7 as being available.

The version of kdeplasma-addons that synaptic wants to install (but which fails

[Bug 303522] Re: there should be a way to install all debug libraries easily

2009-02-22 Thread N7DR
Yes, I know how to do it. My principal point, though, is that in general
one doesn't bother installing debug symbols for a particular application
until after one's had a crash -- which is too late.

The ideal time to make the decision to install debug libraries would be
during system installation.

I agree that for the vast majority of people, they shouldn't be messing
with this, because the vast majority of people are never going to be
submitting bug reports. For those of us who try had to provide
meaningful bug reports as our contribution to help make [K]ubuntu better
(by submitting reports either to launchpad or to bugs.kde.org), it would
be tremendously helpful to be able to make the decision *once*, and then
have the debug versions installed so that they are already present when
a crash occurs. That way we can provide a meaningful backtrace without
having to separately install new libraries and then hoping that the
crash repeats itself (which it may not do for weeks or months).

"brainstorm" might be the appropriate place, because perhaps there's a
better way than the way I'm suggesting. I'm just trying to think of a
way to avoid two syndromes, both of which are currently all-too-common
for those of us who habitually file bug reports:

1) "the program crashed; now I'll install debug symbols and hope that it
crashes again"
2) "the program crashed and I'd installed debugging symbols for that
application, but I didn't realise that it also uses library X and I didn't
install the debug version of that library"

[Bug 411193] [NEW] wish: moving/copying photos in digikam should automatically rename the underlying file if necessary

2009-08-09 Thread N7DR
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: digikam

64-bit Kubuntu jaunty; digikam 0.10.0.

It is far too hard to organize one's pictures in digikam if one uses
multiple cameras.

The root of the problem lies in the fact that each camera will
independently name its image files. So if one imports files from
multiple cameras, then the filenames will be duplicated. (The same
happens if a camera is reset; often the filenames begin to recycle in
that case.) This is not a problem as long as one imports the files into
different albums. However, if one has (for example) an album of pictures
of flowers, then when one attempts to move a set of images of flowers
from camera X into that album, it is frequently the case that many files
with the same name from camera Y already exist in the album.

It seems to me that the point of digikam is to organize *photos*, not
files, and for many people they will not care about the underlying
filename; hence, it would make sense to provide an option so that in the
case of a filename conflict, the destination filename can be changed
without user interaction (say, by appending "-NNN" where NNN is a number
-- that's just a suggestion, though -- to the base filename).

In this scheme, then, if the album "Flowers" already has a file called
"DSC0050.jpg" and one attempts to copy/move another image that happens
also to be called "DSC0050.jpg" into the album, then digikam would
automatically create the file in the "Flowers" album with the name
"DSC0050-001.jpg".

This problem is not so bad if one is moving small numbers of files
around, but if one is moving hundreds of photos at a time, the current
scheme of warning about name conflicts and requiring explicit user
involvement is simply impractical.

[Bug 345672] Re: Okular epub support missing

It seems like something like the extra package you suggest would be a
great idea. Right now, it's very confusing to the end-user not to be

Also, at least for this particular format, it's hard to believe that
more and more people won't be affected by the inability to view it in

[Bug 66744] Re: kdevelop will not run on 6.06-1 AMD64

2006-10-18 Thread N7DR
It looks pretty bad:

-

Unable to find plugins, KDevelop will not work properly!
Please make sure that KDevelop is installed in your KDE directory, otherwise
you have to add KDevelop's installation path to the environment variable
KDEDIRS and run kbuildsycoca. Restart KDevelop afterwards.
Example for BASH users:
export KDEDIRS=/path/to/kdevelop:$KDEDIRS && kbuildsycoca

-

The fact that no kdevelop items appear in the main menu seems to
indicate that there is something fundamentally wrong. (I'm told on
kubuntu-users that there are supposed to be menu items.) I could try to
understand and follow the instructions in this error message, but I
don't even know what it means by "your KDE directory", so rather than
try to follow the instructions and probably get myself into a real mess,
it seemed better to report this as a bug, because presumably this is NOT

I hope that maybe that is of some help.

Then I uninstalled kdevelop3 and tried to install kdevelop:

-

No obvious errors there, but I got the usual error message about plug-
ins. (Is there supposed to be a kdevelop-plugins package; there is a
kdevelop3-plugins package, but not one for kdevelop.)

Then I removed kdevelop and once again tried to install kdevelop3:

-

-

So, a different log this time (no obvious errors), but running it still
gave the error message about plugins, and at this point it sort-of looks
like the package caches are contaminated (otherwise why would I get a
different log: one that does not complain about being unable to
configure?)

Anyway, I hope that all this is of some use. This is a development
system, and unless kdevelop works I am going to have to back
WIndows/VC++ instead :-( [Much to the amusement of Windows-using
colleagues, I expect]

2006-10-23 Thread N7DR
I discovered that if I install ONLY the kdeveop and kdevelop-data
packages, then kdevelop installs properly (I get the menu items) and
seems to work OK.

So it looks like installing _all_ of the kdevelop-* packages was the
mistake. Most likely it was kdevelop-dev that broke things (although I',
just guessing). It isn't at all clear what kdevelop-dev does. One would
imagine that's actually requires (since, by definition, kdevelop is for
development, so one would expect to need the *-dev package, which is why
I installed it originally).

Anyway, for now I am trying to run without kdevelop-dev installed, and
we'll see if that breaks anything.

I'm kind of scared to now install the one remaining package, kdevelop-
dev (especially since it sounds like I don't need it), since that will
put me back into the state of having all four kdevelop-* packages
installed, which was exactly the configuration in which kdevelop would
not run when I initially installed everything. Since I now have a
functioning kdevelop, I don't want to risk breaking it, especially just
for the sake of installing a package I don't need.

I have a feeling that it actually wouldn't break anything, and that
kdvevelop is actually only broken if one installs all four packages at
once. But since this is a work machine on which I am trying to do real
development, I don't want to experiment any more. I'll see if I can find
a spare AMD64 box and install all four kdevelop-* packages there and see
what happens.

[Bug 58517] In Kubuntu, xearth cannot write to root window

2006-09-01 Thread N7DR
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xearth

xearth is designed to be a dynamic desktop background. It has worked
fine with KDE in other distros.

steps:

Select K | System Settings | Desktop | Background

Set Background to "No picture"

Click "Advanced Options" button

Click "Use the following program for drawing the background"

Add xearth with command: /usr/X11R6/bin/xearth -root

Click the various "Apply/OK" buttons.

In theory (and with other KDE distros) one should now see the Earth on one's
desktop. But one doesn't :-(

[Bug 62349] Re: GmailFS won't mount

2006-11-08 Thread N7DR
I have spoken with the author of gmailfs.

It seems that the packager never actually tested this package. There are
at least two fatal packaging bugs. (There may be more, but we know about
these two).

1. mount.gmailsfs needs to be in /sbin. (This is discussed earlier in
this thread.)

2. The error described by Lord Alba is due to libgmail not properly
parsing the response from gmail. In order to get rid of this bug, the
gmailfs author believes that at least version 0.1.5 of libgmail is
needed, whereas the package dependency listing requires only 0.0.8 or
later (and in fact the current kubuntu version is 0.1.4-2build1, which
does not meet the requirement of being >= 0.1.5).

So it seems that two things need to happen to fix this bug (which
currently renders the entire gmailfs package simply a waste of time and
space at the moment):

1. libgmail needs to be updated
2. the packaging for gmailfs needs to be fixed as described above

We don't know whether this will be sufficient to allow the (revised)
gmailfs package to be used, but it is certainly necessary.

[Bug 62349] Re: GmailFS won't mount

Incidentally, I am using dapper. (My attempt to upgrade to edgy was a
disaster :-) ) So if this is fixed, I request that it be backported to
dapper.

[Bug 62349] Re: GmailFS won't mount

Which dapper backports?

In my sources.list I have:

deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-backports main restricted
universe multiverse
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-backports main restricted
universe multiverse

but synaptic says that 0.1.4-2build1 is the latest available.

BTW, I running amd64. Maybe it's not been backported to that
architecture? (There does seem a tendency in Kubuntu to forget about
building 64-bit packages :-( )

[Bug 192979] [NEW] [gutsy] curlftpfs: many operations fail

2008-02-18 Thread N7DR
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: curlftpfs

In gutsy (at least in 64-bit) curlftpfs is unusably broken.

One can mount a filesystem OK, but many operations produce the error:

[H:sff-net] ls -al
ls: .: Transport endpoint is not connected

There are several reports on the Web (applying not just to Ubuntu) that
this can be fixed by using a later version of libcurl. than is shipped
with gutsy.

[Bug 127475] "atq" reqports jobs as still executing on "=" queue following crash

2007-07-21 Thread N7DR
Public bug reported:

Fully reproducible

dapper amd64 with all updates

If jobs are executing on the "=" job queue when the system crashes, then
following the reboot the command "atq" reports them as still running,
even though the processes no longer exist.

Reproduce by:

1. Placing jobs on the batch queue and letting them start.
2. Crash the system (e.g., kill the power)
3. Following reboot, run the "atq" command: the jobs will still be listed as
executing

[Bug 77971] Re: usb flash drive not working. Lsusb hangs with no output.

2007-07-29 Thread N7DR
I am seeing this too (dapper amd64 with all current patches).

At some time in the past, I know that USB drives worked fine on this
machine (probably the last time I tries was about six months ago), but
now the system is simply ignoring them.

In the past hour I have tried three different USB drives, all of which
work fine under Windows and/or Mandrake 2006. My Kubunutu system simply
ignores them. No error messages anywhere. No nothing.

This is a recently-rebooted system (yesterday). I plan to reboot again
tomorrow for other reasons (to flash a BIOS upgrade -- which is why I
wanted my USB memory drives to be working: so I could put the new BIOS
on one instead of on a floppy disk), and we'll see if that helps any.

[Bug 77971] Re: usb flash drive not working. Lsusb hangs with no output.

2007-07-29 Thread N7DR
I probably wasn't sufficiently clear about excatly which symptoms I am
seeing.

Specifically:

no error or other messages in /var/log/messages
no recognition that a USB drive has been inserted into a USB port
lsusb hangs (forever), and cannot be aborted with ctrl-C
killing the lsusb process has no effect (lsusb remains in the process list)
