[Bug 245596] [NEW] information provided by System Services is incorrect
Public bug reported: Running Kubuntu gutsy amd64. Go to System Settings | System Services. The status of many of the listed services is incorrect. Many of the services are listed as "not running" when in fact they are running. This bug has been confirmed by several users on the Kubuntu-users reflector. (See <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and the following messages in that thread.) This bug does not seem to be confined to 64-bit gutsy; that just happens to be the version I am running. It is possible that this bug represents a security vulnerability: although I have seen only cases in which a service is listed as "not running" when in fact it is running, if the opposite also occurs then it is possible that a user might believe that a security-related service is running when in fact it is not running. Since I haven't seen an instance in which the status is mis-reported for a process that is actually NOT running, I will not list this as a security vulnerability. However, I encourage the security team to look at this bug to determine whether there are any cases in which the status of NOT-running services is misreported. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- information provided by System Services is incorrect https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/245596 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 305519] [NEW] include debug version of libkorganizerprivate.so
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: korganizer Kubuntu 8.10 64-bit. There doesn't seem to be a debug version of libkorganizerprivate.so anywhere (at least, I can't find one). [Bug 303522] Re: there should be a way to install all debug libraries easily
Very good question. If one reads the two reports at face value, I don't think they're quite the same. I think that the intention of 304129 is that after a crash, you should be presented with the capability install the debug libraries for the crashed application (at the moment, you have to go find them yourself and install them manually). The purpose of this report is a bit different: to have one-click installation of all the possible debug libraries, even before the first application crash (i.e., something one would perform during or immediately after installing the system). That's my understanding of the two reports, anyway. -- there should be a way to install all debug libraries easily https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303522 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 224889] Re: Povray preview windows appear transparent
This remains a problem in intrepid (I'm using 64-bit Kubuntu). The OP understates the effect of this bug. It's bad enough that the preview window is utterly useless (and hence povray is more or less useless for rendering complex scenes, as one cannot watch the progress of the scene generation, which may take many hours). I am reduced to using Windows for povray (on a much slower machine; but at least I can see problems in real time as the scene is rendered). -- Povray preview windows appear transparent https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/224889 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 303519] [NEW] okularpart debug library missing
Public bug reported: In order to help the KDE developrs, they need complete backtraces when a crash occurs. This means that debug libraries need to be available and installed. I just experienced a crash in okular, but the backtrace shows that a non-debug version of /usr/lib/kde4/okularpart.so is installed. When I go to synaptic to look for a debug version of that library, I don't see a package that seems to indicate that one is available. Hence, one cannot usefully report okular crashes to bugs.kde.org. [Bug 303522] [NEW] there should be a way to install all debug libraries easily
Public bug reported: I submit frequent bug reports to bugs.kde.org. Often these reports contain backtraces; but I often find myself in the situation that I only realise that a non-debug library for some particular application is installed AFTER a crash has occurred (because in that case the backtrace shows that debugging symbols weren't available in the library that was in use). So I end up manually installing the debug library at that point (only after that particular application has crashed). There should be some way in Kubuntu to say globally "install debug libraries" (or even something like "install debug libraries for standard KDE apps"), so that one can do the installation once and all applications will have debugging information available the first time that they crash. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- there should be a way to install all debug libraries easily https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303522 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 367495] Re: [intrepid]: no upgrade notification for jaunty received, manual attempt says nothing to upgrade
Yes, I am aware of the workaround. However, I figure that for every person who knows enough to do that, or to come here to file a bug report, there are probably hundreds or thousands of ordinary users who are seeing the same bug and don't know what to do about it, so I think it is still important for the developers to be aware of the bug and to fix it. The weird thing is that overnight last night, I finally received the upgrade notification on the laptop which had this problem. I did nothing at all to cause it to appear, but it looks like today's daily status check for some reason was informed that an upgrade is available, whereas none of the status checks in the past week have done so. -- [intrepid]: no upgrade notification for jaunty received, manual attempt says nothing to upgrade https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/367495 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to update-notifier-kde in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 181603] Re: [gutsy] korganizer alarms sometimes fail to fire
Yes, I am still seeing this. I can't figure out a complete description of how to definitely reproduce it. But this seems usually to work: Create an event in korganizer with an associated alarm a short time in the future (a few minutes, for example). Pretty much always, it won't fire. It seems that logging out and logging back in to KDE will cause the alarms always to fire properly. As far as I can tell, the associated calendar entries (like the one in the original report) look fine. It's as if whatever is responsible for reading the file and figuring out when to fire alarms doesn't properly recognize when one has created a new entry in the file. -- [gutsy] korganizer alarms sometimes fail to fire https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/181603 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdepim in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

[Bug 312814] [NEW] margin kerning include files not in pdftex search path
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: texlive 64-bit intrepid. texlive 2007.dfsg.1-2. The usual way to use margin kerning in pdftex is to include the file "protcode.tex" (which then includes other files). Two (identical) copies of protcode.tex are installed in intrepid: [HN:usr] find . -name protcode.tex ./share/doc/texlive-doc/pdftex/thanh/ext/protcode.tex ./share/doc/texlive-base-bin-doc/pdftex/thanh/ext/protcode.tex [HN:usr] But neither of them is in the path searched by pdftex. This means that the usual line \input protcode.tex fails. Most likely, the problem is due to the fact that neither of these directories is included in kpathsea. The relevant files should therefore be also included in a directory that is available via the kpathsea mechanism. (Note that this is only my guess as to the problem... the basic bug is simply that "\input protcode.tex" fails.) ** Affects: texlive-base (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- margin kerning include files not in pdftex search path https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/312814 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Having installed kgamma 4:4.1.3-0ubuntu1~intrepid1 on a 64-bit Kubuntu 8.10 system, I tried running it from krandrtray (see bug report 315925). Using it wasn't obvious, so I hit "Help" and got a page that talks about something that bears little resemblance to what kgamma was showing me. The help page seems to be: help:/kcontrol/kcmdisplay/index.html This help page says that it is "Revision 1.01.00 (2007-07-29)". So I think it's referring to an old (KDE3) program, which is why it seems to make no sense in the context of the current kgamma. So, basically, it seems that either kgamma needs some help written for it. Or, if that already exists, then it needs to be displayed when you hit "Help". Note added from bugs.kde.org: this works in Mandriva, and the displayed file in Mandriva is help:/kgamma/index.html, (which turns out to be the correct file), not help:/kcontrol/kcmdisplay/index.html as is displayed by Kubuntu. ** Affects: kdegraphics (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- incorrect help file for kgamma https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/317202 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Kubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to kdegraphics in ubuntu. -- kubuntu-bugs mailing list kubuntu-b...@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/kubuntu-bugs

Do you think should I start a new bug that says something to the effect of: "tell the user that he needs to install khelpuser"? I mean, as it stands, "normal" user is just going to see the error message and form a negative opinion of Kubuntu, so it really is a bug as seen from the user's perspective (he's asked for help, and hasn't received any). [Bug 315925] [NEW] kgamma installs... but there's no indication how to run it
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: kgamma I have installed kgamma 4:4.1.3-0ubuntu1~intrepid1 into my Kubuntu 8.10 64-bit system... But I can't figure out how to run it. 1. [Bug 151093] Re: [Kubuntu] [amd64] text in Openoffice.org can't be pasted correctly with the middle mouse button
I don't know what "as official as you get" means :-( It seems to me that I would be offered to update the packages if they were official. Maybe I've done something wrong, but the machines here are all configured with repositories exactly the way Kubuntu configures them out-of-the-box, [we are very careful not to mess with that, having ended up in deep trouble in the past by trying to use non-official packages] and the version of OO.o that I'm running is the latest one offered, which is :1:2.4.1-11ubuntu2.1 (intrepid-updates). So if I have to wait, I'll wait. Having a hosed production machine (as has happened all too often in the past when following advice to move away from official packages) is too high a price. It seems like there are OO.o updates fairly frequently anyway, so presumably we'll get another one before long. -- [Kubuntu] [amd64] text in Openoffice.org can't be pasted correctly with the middle mouse button https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/151093 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 278415] Re: krecipes crashes before it can launch
yep, me too. krecipes is completely borked on 64-bit intrepid. I basically did the same as Scott S. First time I tried to install it, I stepped through the initialization sequence and it crashed when I hit "Finish" (instantly, though. not after a few minutes). I performed a "complete removal" from synaptic. Reinstalled. Then it crashed instantly on start-up. Another "complete removal"; at which point I looked and saw that "complete removal" doesn't seem to mean *complete* removal (argh) because there were still krecipes files in the ~/kde/ hierarchy. I manually removed them. Reinstalled krecipes. Still it crashes instantly on startup. [Bug 252026] Re: Hardy package for tovid doesn't place makemenu, makexml etc. into user's path
You may not want to call this a bug, but to a user the behaviour is indistinguishable from a bug. When something is installed, the user expects to be able to execute the program without having to figure out that it's been somewhere elsewhere than in his path. At the very least, there should be some sort of warning about this unexpected behavioue when the package is installed. However, I would urge you to reconsider the "this is not a bug" stance. In detail, the reasons I think that you should reconsider this stance: "They are low-level utilities" What does "low-level" mean? They are scripts, so by definition they can hardly be "low-level". System calls are low-level. "that most users aren't interested in" But the user has explicitly installed this package. Therefore, by definition, *this* user *is* interested in them. "and they have generic names that pollute the namespace" So are there other programs that are in other packages and which ARE installed into the path that duplicate these names? If there is indeed a name clash, then I agree that there is a problem and someone should consider changing the names in one of the packages. If there is no name clash, then what is the issue? -- Hardy package for tovid doesn't place makemenu, makexml etc. into user's path https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252026 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 303522] Re: there should be a way to install all debug libraries easily
Yes, I know how to do it. My principal point, though, is that in general one doesn't bother installing debug symbols for a particular application until after one's had a crash -- which is too late. The ideal time to make the decision to install debug libraries would be during system installation. I agree that for the vast majority of people, they shouldn't be messing with this, because the vast majority of people are never going to be submitting bug reports. For those of us who try had to provide meaningful bug reports as our contribution to help make [K]ubuntu better (by submitting reports either to launchpad or to bugs.kde.org), it would be tremendously helpful to be able to make the decision *once*, and then have the debug versions installed so that they are already present when a crash occurs. That way we can provide a meaningful backtrace without having to separately install new libraries and then hoping that the crash repeats itself (which it may not do for weeks or months). "brainstorm" might be the appropriate place, because perhaps there's a better way than the way I'm suggesting. I'm just trying to think of a way to avoid two syndromes, both of which are currently all-too-common for those of us who habitually file bug reports: 1) "the program crashed; now I'll install debug symbols and hope that it crashes again" 2) "the program crashed and I'd installed debugging symbols for that application, but I didn't realise that it also uses library X and I didn't install the debug version of that library" -- there should be a way to install all debug libraries easily https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303522 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 411193] [NEW] wish: moving/copying photos in digikam should automatically rename the underlying file if necessary
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: digikam 64-bit Kubuntu jaunty; digikam 0.10.0. It is far too hard to organize one's pictures in digikam if one uses multiple cameras. The root of the problem lies in the fact that each camera will independently name its image files. So if one imports files from multiple cameras, then the filenames will be duplicated. (The same happens if a camera is reset; often the filenames begin to recycle in that case.) This is not a problem as long as one imports the files into different albums. However, if one has (for example) an album of pictures of flowers, then when one attempts to move a set of images of flowers from camera X into that album, it is frequently the case that many files with the same name from camera Y already exist in the album. It seems to me that the point of digikam is to organize *photos*, not files, and for many people they will not care about the underlying filename; hence, it would make sense to provide an option so that in the case of a filename conflict, the destination filename can be changed without user interaction (say, by appending "-NNN" where NNN is a number -- that's just a suggestion, though -- to the base filename). In this scheme, then, if the album "Flowers" already has a file called "DSC0050.jpg" and one attempts to copy/move another image that happens also to be called "DSC0050.jpg" into the album, then digikam would automatically create the file in the "Flowers" album with the name "DSC0050-001.jpg". This problem is not so bad if one is moving small numbers of files around, but if one is moving hundreds of photos at a time, the current scheme of warning about name conflicts and requiring explicit user involvement is simply impractical. ** Affects: digikam (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- wish: moving/copying photos in digikam should automatically rename the underlying file if necessary https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/411193 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

It seems like something like the extra package you suggest would be a great idea. [Bug 66744] Re: kdevelop will not run on 6.06-1 AMD64
It looks pretty bad: - Unable to find plugins, KDevelop will not work properly! Please make sure that KDevelop is installed in your KDE directory, otherwise you have to add KDevelop's installation path to the environment variable KDEDIRS and run kbuildsycoca. Restart KDevelop afterwards. Example for BASH users: export KDEDIRS=/path/to/kdevelop:$KDEDIRS && kbuildsycoca - The fact that no kdevelop items appear in the main menu seems to indicate that there is something fundamentally wrong. (I'm told on kubuntu-users that there are supposed to be menu items.) I could try to understand and follow the instructions in this error message, but I don't even know what it means by "your KDE directory", so rather than try to follow the instructions and probably get myself into a real mess, it seemed better to report this as a bug, because presumably this is NOT supposed to happen. -- kdevelop will not run on 6.06-1 AMD64 https://launchpad.net/bugs/66744 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 66744] Re: kdevelop will not run on 6.06-1 AMD64
I haven't seen anything here for a couple of days, so I did some more experimenting after a complete reboot (to get rid of any cached files). Trying to install kdevelop3 produces this logfile: - Selecting previously deselected package kdevelop3-data. (Reading database ... 139659 files and directories currently installed.) (Is there supposed to be a kdevelop-plugins package; there is a kdevelop3-plugins package, but not one for kdevelop.) Then I removed kdevelop and once again tried to install kdevelop3: - Preconfiguring packages ... Selecting previously deselected package kdevelop3-data. [Bug 66744] Re: kdevelop will not run on 6.06-1 AMD64
I discovered that if I install ONLY the kdeveop and kdevelop-data packages, then kdevelop installs properly (I get the menu items) and seems to work OK. So it looks like installing _all_ of the kdevelop-* packages was the mistake. Most likely it was kdevelop-dev that broke things (although I', just guessing). It isn't at all clear what kdevelop-dev does. One would imagine that's actually requires (since, by definition, kdevelop is for development, so one would expect to need the *-dev package, which is why I installed it originally). Anyway, for now I am trying to run without kdevelop-dev installed, and we'll see if that breaks anything. -- kdevelop will not run on 6.06-1 AMD64 https://launchpad.net/bugs/66744 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 66744] Re: kdevelop will not run on 6.06-1 AMD64
OK. I have now installed the kdevelop-doc package, and everything is still working. I'm kind of scared to now install the one remaining package, kdevelop- dev (especially since it sounds like I don't need it), since that will put me back into the state of having all four kdevelop-* packages installed, which was exactly the configuration in which kdevelop would not run when I initially installed everything. Since I now have a functioning kdevelop, I don't want to risk breaking it, especially just for the sake of installing a package I don't need. I have a feeling that it actually wouldn't break anything, and that kdvevelop is actually only broken if one installs all four packages at once. But since this is a work machine on which I am trying to do real development, I don't want to experiment any more. I'll see if I can find a spare AMD64 box and install all four kdevelop-* packages there and see what happens. -- kdevelop will not run on 6.06-1 AMD64 https://launchpad.net/bugs/66744 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 62349] Re: GmailFS won't mount
I have spoken with the author of gmailfs. It seems that the packager never actually tested this package. There are at least two fatal packaging bugs. (There may be more, but we know about these two). 1. mount.gmailsfs needs to be in /sbin. (This is discussed earlier in this thread.) 2. The error described by Lord Alba is due to libgmail not properly parsing the response from gmail. In order to get rid of this bug, the gmailfs author believes that at least version 0.1.5 of libgmail is needed, whereas the package dependency listing requires only 0.0.8 or later (and in fact the current kubuntu version is 0.1.4-2build1, which does not meet the requirement of being >= 0.1.5). So it seems that two things need to happen to fix this bug (which currently renders the entire gmailfs package simply a waste of time and space at the moment): 1. libgmail needs to be updated 2. the packaging for gmailfs needs to be fixed as described above We don't know whether this will be sufficient to allow the (revised) gmailfs package to be used, but it is certainly necessary. -- GmailFS won't mount https://launchpad.net/bugs/62349 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
